Playboy announced that starting in the Feb 2015 issue of the printed magazine there will be no more nudity. Personally i think the reason for this is spot on.
Playboy was created to help women express themselves freely and openly. Hef was a major proponent for women's rights. When the publication launched it was a huge shock to society as it gave women a voice targeted directly to men. This was on of the first instances of print media that was tasteful artistic and not porn that featured women in the nude or scantily clad. I think it is interesting that they have decided that the tides have changed enough and are pulling back. I think this a really cool step for Playboy and i am very interested to see where the publication goes from here. I would love to hear what other people think. Was Hef a champion for women's rights in a super conservative time in america's history , or was it all just porn? I lean towards that Hef saw he completed the mission of allowing women an outlet to express themselves freely and that the times have change America is becoming more progressive and such an outlet is no longer a necessity for society.
My 2 cents love to hear yours

While I believe Hef thinks he's a proponent for women's rights not all women would agree with him. Also, some of the stories you hear about what goes on just seem cray.

But on the topic of the magazine I do think of it as art. I'm not sure how this will impact the magazine/company going forward. The brand has been slowly dying since the Internet provides what he did in a cheaper and quicker way.

At first I thought it was dumb but then I did some very brief research and came across this article. I thought it gave some decent info and is worth the read despite it being so long: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/13/business/media/nudes-are-old-news-at-playboy.html

Also, according to the article it wasn't HH that suggested the change, although I'm interested in seeing people's reactions to this.

I also sort of want to now get a subscription just so I can have the last few ones and at least the first one next year (btw it's February 2016 if I'm not mistaken?) just for comparison and to say that I have some of the older ones.

I feel like the last few issues and the first non-nudity one will be collector's items.

I feel like the one subscriber left of playboy will be unhappy, but with all the loads of free porn on the internet, nudie magazines are a very very dead business model.

I agree the business as a whole is dying. They need to do something to stay competitive and now will look to compete for advertisers against magazines like Maxim.

I don´t mind. I always only bought them for the articles anyway.
I'm sad this joke is going to die.

Playboy was already dead. The only thing keeping it afloat is Viagra and the boat loads of good investments that aren't playboy. The name playboy will always piss off your girlfriend, unlike getting a Maxim magazine.

I just got a subscription so I could say I have the last few magazines and so I can see what the first new one will look like.

Now...I wonder how many others did the same thing I did...?

Also this is amazing: http://www.playboyshop.com/

I hit refresh until I got a bunch of bunnies hopping across a lawn. Adooorable <3

Playboy is as dead as my grandpa.
They might have some success merchandising to silly kids who wear black socks in their sneakers. Those people will do anything they are told. The brand name will always have clout with naughty tidbits and hotel suites. They should really go full on toy and novelty shop lines. Consolidate and organize the different adult stores out there under one top notch brand.

Walking into a playboy shop would not be as apprehensive a thing as walking into "whips and slips" with the crusty mannequins in the window. They are missing a HUGE opportunity on that one. Merge the playboy channel with QVC and add some brick and mortar stores. $$$$.
If only CEOs had glass rectums they could finally see out into the real world.

As for the magazine... That's dead no matter what they do, unless they cut it back to 4 issues a year and have it free with any purchase at the brick and mortar store or home delivery with really cheap subscription options.
With no "get to see someone who doesn't do nudes, nude!" going for it, the sales will slowly die.

Lets face it, the sexuality and nudity, or naughtiness of playboy was all it had for itself. The brand is becoming extremely tacky except for a few niche markets. Unless they capitalize on the tiny bit of identity and class left they're dead. The magazine is the history, not the future.

Playboy cant turn a horny wolf into a stallion, no matter how good the stilts are.

The sad thing here is they are already getting success from their decision. People curiosity and marketing sell anything. Sucker born every second thing :D

That's the thing. This is US CEO success, short term, zero sustainability. Great for bonus and stock options, horrid for the long term. People are going to subscribe, probably people who have no interest in playboy whatsoever will get these last few magazines inflating the crap out of numbers and revenue.
Its even been said here:

I just got a subscription so I could say I have the last few magazines and so I can see what the first new one will look like.

Now...I wonder how many others did the same thing I did...?

A lot, and that was predictable because of the power and history of the brand.
Just like when GM killed off the Firebird and Camaro lines, sales skyrocketed for those last few years. Well... those cars still aren't collectible yet (although owners think they are) and probably wont really be the best ones to collect because there are so damn many in garages out there. I'd spend the money on a Grand National.

That being said, I think there will be some intrinsic value to the last real playboy and the first new one. Just don't expect much monetary value until wives and girlfriends start dumping the stash. With that in mind, the last nude should hold much more value than the first new.

So that's my opinion.
Just go to the newstand and pick up the last real, and the first new playboy. Give the boobies edition to your grandkids who might sell it for 99$ in 2089.

From my satirical website: This won''t change much. If an American wants to get off he chooses a gun magazine over porn every time.

I initially voted no, but gotta agree that there's a bigger market for a non-nudity girlie mag. A lot more people really will read it for the articles!
