Class
I haven't decided my main class, yet. I tried an Elementalist in BWE2. It will likely be a caster of some sort, but Engineer sounds tempting as well.
What role do you wish to play in the guild? For example: PvP, PvE, Casual/Social
In previous MMO's, I focused pretty heavily on PvE. So, I will definitely be spending a significant amount of time exploring the world and running through dungeons. However, I think I will likely be more involved with PvP in GW2. I will definitely be a more casual player.
Which previous MMO's or online games have you played and how long for?
I've played more online games than I can count. So, I'll focus on the MMO's.MUDs - It makes me feel old to even mention them, but I played several text-based MUDs back in the day. Only mentioned since they are more or less the beginning of modern day MMO's.
Everquest - Very short period of time. All I remember is being stuck in the starting zone for several days killing the same spiders trying to level far enough to move to the next area.
Dark Ages of Camelot - I played DAOC for a little over a year and absolutely loved it. The PvE was great and took a great deal of teamwork to be successful. The PvE is what made the game, though. This aspect is what excites me about GW2. The long WvW battles are what I loved in DAOC.
Everquest 2 - Back when everybody else and their mother were starting to play WoW, I started playing EQ2. I loved the world, the graphics, and the guild I was part of. This game is the first of my serious MMO playing. I was part of a hardcore guild and played all day every day (when I wasn't in class).
World of Warcraft - I played WoW for a short time during the original beta. I enjoyed it, but didn't end up playing at release. I finally gave in in December of 2005 and started a trial of the game. I didn't look back until about 6 years later. I started in a semi-casual guild raiding Molten Core whenever we had enough people around that were interested. After a couple of years, I was frustrated with lack of progression and joined a hardcore raiding guild. I spent a couple years raiding three or more nights a week and ended up being one of the most well-geared mages on Zul'jin. After spending that much time treating the game as a second job, I became burnt out. I quit the game for several months, then went back to play very casually with some friends and the amazing woman who is now my wife. With the changes they made to the game and the lack of casual friends to play with, I never really got back into it.
Warhammer - My wife and I played Warhammer together during the beta and for a short time after release. I had high hopes of it taking over where DAOC left off and my wife gracefully endured it while it lasted. Sadly, it wasn't even close to what I was looking for, so we dropped it fairly quickly.
Rift - My wife and I played Rift for about six months. We enjoyed several aspects of it, but the allure also didn't last.
Were you a part of a guild? What was your experience?
Over the years, I have been a member of many different guilds. I was an officer in my EQ2 guild, a leader in one WoW guild, an officer in several other WoW guilds, and a lowly grunt in various other guilds. It's tough to describe my guild experience, since I have been in many different parts of my life and many different types of guilds. I enjoyed leading my WoW guild and enjoyed being an officer in several guilds, but it is a very tough and thankless job. Being that each guild has so many different personalities and everybody wants something different out of the game their playing, it's an extremely difficult juggling act to keep as many people happy as possible. I will never put myself through such a leadership role again, but it helped me understand what guild leaders have to deal with.
The hardcore guilds I was part of were an incredible amount of fun. I loved being able to be a part of the progression, being able to obtain some of the best gear in the game, and working as a team to accomplish these things. However, I don't believe I will ever be at a place in my life where I'll want to be part of that again. I dedicate myself quite a bit to everything I take on in life, but I am at a place where my family is far more important than any game I may play. I won't ever be rushing home from work just to make it to a raid on time so some 17 year old kid can scream at me over Ventrillo because I mistakenly cast a spell 2 seconds too early. I love games, but they aren't my life.
I've loved the casual guilds I've been a part of. I enjoy meeting and talking to people who are in the games just to have fun. I'm not an overly talkative person, but I like to think I can bring a little bit to the social experience of a guild.
How did you hear about the Guild?
I've been getting more and more excited about GW2, so I started doing a bit of research to find out more about the game mechanics and try to decide what/how I want to play. In doing so, I stumbled across your "Podcast for New Players". It was extremely informative and I really liked how you guys seemed to interact. You all seem to care enough about the game to understand it and play it properly without taking it too seriously. So, I dug through your forums a bit and thought it sounded like a good group of people and thought I'd apply.
What will you bring to the ALTTABME community? (Chatty? Skilled? Funny? Helping?)
I wouldn't consider myself chatty, by any stretch of the imagination. But, I am friendly and enjoy the social aspect of MMO's. I love to group and help guild members with whatever they're working on. I do end up talking eventually; sometimes too much.
Will Arcanix be the only guild you join? Most likely, yes.
Is there anything else you would like to throw in here at the end?
Just as a heads up, my wife (Elerra) will also be applying. We want to enjoy this game together, so please consider this as a joint application. If she won't fit in with the guild, I won't be joining either (and vice versa). Thanks for taking the time to consider us.
