What role do you wish to play in the guild? For example: PvP, PvE, Casual/Social
I'm a PvEer at heart, with the need for the occasional adrenaline rush that comes from playing against a real person on the other end of the encounter i.e. PvP. Based on the enjoyable experience I've had in WvW so far, I suspect that I'll enjoy something around 70/30 PvE/PvP. I'm a believer in the joint success, which ultimately is one of the purposes of a guild environment, so I tend be one of those people that shows up for anything and everything: need more mats in the guild bank, I'm off farming; need assistance with a dungeon/quest/mob, I'll come on over; bored and want someone in your group, sure; group event mob just isn't dying and someone is needed to play the water elementalist and pseudo-heal, I'm relogging; you just can't quite take that tower, and need some additional WvW firepower, let me queue. I enjoy the social aspects of a _good_ guild environment, and try to contribute that success.
Which previous MMO's or online games have you played and how long for?
This goes back a few years - I first started MUDing back in 1994 playing Hidden Worlds (a Merc/DikuMUD variant). I started my own MUD (an Envy variant) in 1995, which is still up (well, will be back up once I find a monitor and figure out how I hosed that Ubuntu upgrade) to this day for mostly nostalgic purposes and for my players who still stop by from time to time to catch up. I seriously MUDed until 1999ish.
After that I did the Diablo/Diablo II thing, as well as Starcraft I. I largely took a break from gaming until WoW, and did the vanilla, BC, and WotLK sequence, but couldn't quite convince myself to do Cataclysm.
The past couple of years have found me on my PS3 playing multiplayer Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 as well as some Borderlands action. My buddies have largely gotten bored with that, and so my play time there was dwindled mainly because those games are substantially more fun with friends.
Lately, prior to GW2 launch, I've been playing a bit of SWTOR and World of Tanks.
Were you a part of a guild? What was your experience?
Generally speaking, yes. Back in the MUD days, I was an Angel of Fire.
I sponsored my own guild in the MUD I ran. In the WoW years, I was generally in a guild, and usually found myself eventually in guild leadership/officer even though every time I swore that I was just there to be a member, but somehow it catches up with me.
In general, I look for guilds whose membership consists of people with whom I would be friends were geographic proximity a reality. I have made many friends from the online realms over the years, and at last count, I was nearing 100 people that I've met in real life that I originally met online through gaming. Many of those people have become Real Friends(tm), and several are very close friends.
As long as people treat the game as a game, are there to have fun and engage in community, and realize that the logout button is available at any time you need to unwind, guilds are great. I'm looking for people that are like me, what I would consider serious casuals. I like to succeed, I like to experience new content, I like to have fun, I like to progress, and I want to do with people whose company I enjoy but I hate rigidity, unnecessary hierarchy (it's a game, enjoyed with friends), casual casuals (what do you mean I actually need to come to a raid with my weapons enchanted?), and strict raiding schedules. And no drama. By $DEITY, no drama. I can't stand guild drama; it's a game.
How did you hear about the Guild?
When I'm not a permanent resident of the overflow servers, I noticed the guild tag roaming the lands. I was browsing some GW forums, and saw the guild on gw2guilds.org. The write-up seemed consistent with my worldview, the size seemed right (not too small, not too large), and reading the forums this morning seemed to reinforce my perceptions that the guild attitude would be a good match for me.
What will you bring to the ALTTABME community? (Chatty? Skilled? Funny? Helping?)
Reviewing what I've written so far, apparently the ongoing need to answer a simple question with an essay. Maybe that's why I'm considering going back to school and pursuing an advanced degree. Hmm - I guess that also implies that I'll be bringing an additional ongoing need to include non-sequiturs in normal conversation. Hopefully I covered or implied most of what I feel I can bring to table above. I like to interact with people, so I tend to be active on guild chat, I like to think of myself of a relatively skilled player (at least I was with my holy priest, we'll see how I do in this post-trinity world), since I'm a healbot at heart, I tend to be helpful since I'm so used to being in support roles, which I honestly enjoy. Really, in short, I bring someone who enjoys interactive gaming, is semi-serious about it, and enjoys having fun while doing it. And I'm told I'm "undercover funny," which has been translated to mean that I have a fairly dry but active sense of humor.
Will Arcanix be the only guild you join?
That is my intention - I'm still not quite sold on this idea of multi-guilding. If it turns out that the interpersonal mix between myself and the guild isn't right, I'm not the type to mindlessly remain a member - I tend to be fairly loyal, even if it's a virtual realm. If we aren't a match, I'd deguild myself. If we are, no reason to split my loyalties.
Is there anything else you would like to throw in here at the end?
I'm generally wandering about the game in the evenings PST. If you'd like to discuss further, please free to reach out to me in-game. We can find a quiet vista point (even if I fail horribly at jumping puzzles), and talk.
