What's new

The 22nd century thread. Or more of a future thread.

The Mad Scientist
Let's start a thread about what probably will or will not happen but would be awseome if it did happen in the future!

Here, I'll start! Feel free to discuss these things in this thread too. :)

It would be cool to be able to get your mind fully hooked up to a virtual reality, as in you move your body ingame but your body doesn't move in the real world (Avatar-ish) and everything you feel inside the virtual reality is an actual feeling.
Now that might not happen in the 21st century but it could happen in the 22nd century, heck I'd love to see something like that!

But it's possible that a youth potion would be developed in the 21st century so that we could live in the 22nd century too, a possible side effect though would be asexuality (mentally not interested in sex anymore). So not many people would be born and the world population would come to a stand still.
Most people (including me) find asexuality pretty lame, but the awseome things we'd be able to see..
It's asexuality or awseome things *killme*

EDIT: Oh thank you! I didn't know I had a creative side!

With the VR, i like the whole idea of being able to immerse myself into a Virtual Reality but here are a LOT of dangers with this. Most everyone has watched SAO? then we know one possibility, it could be hacked and something like that could be done. Another is the movie Surrogate, Bruce Willis starred in it if i can remember correctly. Also, if someone doesn't want to leave the VR they could possibly die from not eating, drinking or letting their bodily functions go.

For the last one i believe there is a way to get around that. Set a time limit on play time (Example: Before you jump into a game you set a limit on time played. 1 hour of play time requires a 15 cooldown period before next use. Or 2 hour playing period requires 30 minutes of cooldown.)

There are many benefits to this as well. Medically this could do wonders as well. Think about someone who is in a wheelchair, crippled or someone with a physical disability. They could come to this virtual world and be able to run, jump, dance etc.

The SAO novels actually touch on all these subjects later, which is one of the reasons the series is so damn good.

I only get sad when I think about death when I think about specifically how I won't be able to see all the cool stuff that comes around after I go.=(

I'm still waiting on flying vehicles, robots that warn me of potential danger, and hi-apple-pie-in-the-sky-condos, a la Jetsons. I was promised all of those things in the late 60's. Where the hell are they?!?! CHOP CHOP Raz, get on it! Until then... NO MORE IDEAS!

I don't want flying cars. People are bad enough on the ground let alone flying over my head.

That suggests you wouldn't be up there yourself? I can't imagine you letting anyone be over your head. Not if you have the chance to be on top. But then again, maybe you are a bottom. :bananasex: *ring, ring, ring, ring, banana phone!* pick it up biotch!

Robots that warn you of potential dangers? We have signs for that.
Sky-condos? I'm afraid of heights.
Flying vehicles? I don't want someone to crash into my house or lab.

With other words: bad idea. -bruceno-

Now get out of my lab and let me do science in peace Dee Dee. -brucebegone-

PS: Just started watching Sword Art Online aaand.... *drum roll* I LOVE IT!

Real VR is a way off, even if the critical breakthrough happens tomorrow it will be 20-30 years until it's implemented. The future is AR.

In the next 20 years, expect to be playing games with digital overlays. Imagine Left 4 Dead, but set in your hometown, firing guns overlaid onto your hands. Imagine games where you can be a wizard, creating fireballs and physically throwing them. Get on board that Google Glass train people, it's going to be epic.

Oh, the possibilities of AR.

Monitors? Where we're going, we don't need 'monitors'.

Opening documents into a 3d overlay, being able to push a document 3 feet away high and to the right while I work on my main doc, then highlighting a relevant table and dragging it into my main report... ah, the ease of staying organized thanks to having 10 times more workspace than even dual 24' monitors. Once I got my system dialed in, I could be even faster than my peers, than I already am. Add some high-performance voice recognition so that I can rapidly catalog, classify, save, and index information according to my own preferences.

It would be hilarious if objects were tethered to the world rather than the operator. "Wups, left a document open in the shower, dammit."

I saw this image a while ago.. maybe a year? I thought it was pretty cool.

Personally, I'm hoping for anti-aging (not just age-slowing) or reverse aging (since I'll be older when/if this happens) technology leading into cyborg bodies or at least enhanced bodies. VR and living in an artificial world is cool, but what good is it if I'm dead? :)

Some of those technologies are things I want to develop :p
I have some ideas for things like immersive VR, retinal screens (think digital contact lense), powered exoskeletons, commercial UAV's and holography :)
I already had those things in my "idea list.txt" for a long while, and this list makes my technological side very happy as I'd have enough projects to do when I run out of my own projects! :D
Thanks Zakis!

Raz, you are my favorite person.

Screened contact lenses is one I've been incorporating into my fiction for a while, but the major problem is getting enough resolution and adjustable transparency at such a small scale. Never mind power and data requirements. Direct projection or projection onto a near plane would probably be easier. Keeping the contact lens as a sensor of eye direction and movement would probably be much faster and more accurate technique for eye tracking, though.

A technology we really need for efficient exoskeletons is more efficient actuators, but I don't have hard data on what the power delivery capabilities of current technologies is. It would be interesting to calculate how much actual muscle strength would be required to say, toss a car. Then extrapolate how bulky an exoskeleton would be based on different actuator technology.

:( this makes me sad. I was born too early :p
