Just kidding. I thought I'd help you all out with a bit of a "The more you know..." P.S.A.

As some of you know, the price of silver right now has SKYROCKETED. I just talked to my ex, who works in the banking industry and she gave me a cool tip~! Are you a change hoarder? I bet you are. If so, this is for you.

If you have any quarters whos mint date is before 1978, guess what, you're sitting on a literal SILVER mine. Because quarters 1978 and before were made with nearly 60% silver, recycling companies want these coins. Each of these quarters is not worth a quarter, they are worth 4 dollars each. Thats right, so a dollar in change would net you 16 dollars because of the exchange rate of silver. DO NOT TAKE THESE INTO YOUR LOCAL BANK.

Also, if you collect any half dollars, made in the mid 80s or before, these are made of over 90% silver, and are each worth 6 dollars. Now is your time to cash in. Go through your old change and see how much money you've made! I bet if you collect change at all, it'll be quite a bit of pocket change (puns of damage). /nyan

you're welcome.

You mean these right?

I thought the cutoff was 1965 or something. Or are those a higher percentage of silver? Hmm.

are those the loonies or the toonies?

Loonies are the golden ones, Toonies are the silver ones with the golden middle part. We also have quarters etc all the way down to the Nickel, we still have some pennies around but they are no longer being printed or given out at banks.

I wish we would get rid of pennies.. bah

I wouldn't mind getting rid of change all together. Round everything to the nearest dollar for sales. Only things that would need to change would be pay phones (do they even still exist) and parking meters (some already take cash/credit in my area). My starbucks barista might be pissed because she no longer gets a tip though.

but how would I "make it hail" when I go to the strip club?

This would be tricky. A lot of things are 29.99 type thing so it doesn't affect it any different than when the penny gets removed, until you hit the 29.49 items it would then drop to 29.00 if paying cash. I bet you would start to see a different type of pricing scheme come into play. This is all moot if you pay via debit or credit though, they still take it as exact.

I honestly wouldn't mind getting rid of hard currency all together. Though that wouldn't really be possible quite yet.

The report she got yesterday said mint date of 78 or earlier, and sorry Rajax, not sure about canadian currency. She said that scrap yards are buying these coins, melting them down and selling silver bricks back, so if you want to cash in on them that's how you do it.

I think companies would be fine with it because those 24.49 items would become $25.

That would be ideal but until we can fix the never ending fear of getting your bank account information hacked and having your money stolen people will be hard pressed to give into a full digital currency. Personally though I very rarely have cash on me.

BUT PENNY CANDY. I still have a shop that sells penny candy for a penny.

I don't mean to rain on the Silver parade but isn't it technically illegal to destroy currency on purpose?
I think there is a loophole. To destroy with intent to take them out of circulation is illegal. Not sure if the actually action of destroying is though.

Technically yes! However the government is already destroying these so they don't care they just want the silver.

But that's because the Mint is Legally entitled to destroy old or dmg currency. just cause the government can do something doesn't me you can :S as unfair as that sounds.
There are legal ways around it. Sell the coins to someone else who will smelt them down for the silver. You never had your hands on the smelting process and not accountable for what happens to the coins after they leave your hands.
