Documentary Craigslist Joe

I just watched this documentary last night and found it really interesting. I have been a fan of Craigslist nearly since its inception, and while there are loads of trash ads out there, and the media talks about all the horrors/dangers of it, overall I think it has been a pretty successful online community exchange.

This documentary is available on Netflix and is basically about a guy, Joe, who takes a chance on humanity via Craigslist to provide for his survival. He has an interesting 30 day journey, and I thought it was really cool to watch.

Are you a fan of Craigslist? What do you primarily use it for if you do?

I found some great furnishings for my apartment that way, and I often find out about freelance jobs and volunteeer opportunities that way.

I never used Craigslist until recently.

I was able to sell my iPad 2 for $375, and buy a very nice bunk bed for my kids for $300.

I think it's great for local, face to face, cash only types of deals. I would be careful buying/selling anything with a high value- meet in a public place and take some friends, never meet at your home. Basic common sense stuff, and the risk is worth it!

I also like Freecycle, which is basically Craigslist where everything is free. Obviously, you won't find lots of quality stuff, but one man's trash is another man's treasure.

I just watched that, too! Like..the same night you did, Kizzie! :p
It was way better than I thought it would be. It made me ponder life.

How weird is that? LOL

It made me do the same. I have often wanted to just pick up a backpack and travel to a random place with no plan. Not sure why that concept appeals to me... must be because I was born during the "Summer of Love". LOL I have checked out couch surfing websites, and while I think I might be brave enough to do it... I still have some reservations.

My life is in flux at the moment. I mean I have some good things happening in it, yet I still feel like there is a void. Something is missing and I have to find it. I think this year I will. :)

Seeing as how I am lucky enough to be able to retire at 46(provided the country is in one piece), I have always said I would put a year away and travel the world with nothing but a bag or two. Who knows what state the world will be in then so I don't know.

On the Craigslist subject; I just listed my PS Vita on there after no one was interested here. I have to say why the hell does everyone want to trade me? I listed it as wanting money only.

"Do you want a paintball gun or an Iphone 3S for it?" No I have 5 paintball guns and I dont need an outdated phone.

"Do you want an ipad? I just got one." No my eyes are set on a Nexus 7.

"Do you want to trade?"x4 NO FFS I JUST WANT MONIES!

I was going to watch this show but I found the idea of it more interesting than the execution. At no point was this person in NEED of craigslist.

But he's a nondescript protagonist, his benefactors, and he's never truly in need; as is made clear at the start, he has a comfortable life to return to whenever he chooses. So the pic becomes simply the moderately diverting record of an offbeat vacation. Opening in Gotham and Los Angeles, the docu should transition quickly to home formats.

Still I might have to check it out for myself.

I think it's more interesting because he isn't in need of anything on CL, but doing it just to see if he can.
We, as humans (especially in our western culture/society) tend to stay where we are comfortable and just complain. That was one of the biggest draws in the movie for me was this guy who didn't need to live off CL and be homeless went and did it anyway. Taking risks.

Risks with no consequences reminds me of Occupy Wallstreet. :p

He had some incredible experiences along the way. That is what I liked most about it... his openness to experience something on a deeper, personal level. Relying on the kindness of strangers. And considering how fearful we have become as a society, putting a lot of faith and trust in our fellow wo/man. I was so moved by his response to certain segments and I am sure I would have responded similarly.

Generally I love people and believe in people. I am one of those who always feels that good will ultimately prevail. Seeing things like this gives me hope for society. It only takes one kind heart to make a difference. We have a lot of kind hearts here at AltTabMe. :)

Ok I watched it. To me this movie fell short in a couple of ways:

The character development was often covered with montage music and one liners with the words "inspired" or "humanity" that we as a people WATCHING already felt. There was no deeper connection with characters beyond a small dialogue here or there. The camera should have been rolling on those moments that made it special like with the Kid from Iraq. More of that would have been great. The meeting with Craig was also a bit of a let down as it seemed everyone had a special story and Craig was just tired and worn out from what he had created The random toy drive to help children was dropped short and there was no payoff or show that his deeds helped There are much more but they all generally have the feeling of falling short.

Don't get me wrong I get what it was trying to do, but it wasn't articulated by any character. Joe was not experienced enough to document his experiences or ask the questions to lead the answers we would have loved to hear. Not canned but inspiring the inspired.

A movie that is based on a true story that helps to tell a story with true relationships and encounters WAY BETTER is Into the Wild

I highly recommend that movie.

Into the Wild is definitely my top movie of all time. That movie literally changed my life. Another one I really loved was 127 hours. Both of those, mind blowing for me. Into the Wild? Definitely A+.

I almost puked from 127 hours. Literally was on the floor holding it back. UGHHH

I live in Ontario, and we have Craigslist, however we also have a site called Kijiji. Kijiji is used wayyyy more than Craigslist here. It's most likely because of the commercials that are played on the Discovery Channel. >.>

I use Kijiji all the time. It's actually through Kijiji that I got the money to build my PC when I was a kid.
