GW2 Farming Gold/Karma in Orr

Hey Guys! I have been down on the Cursed Shore farming items and karma lately and have just been wondering what other guildies have been doing to maximize drops and cash? However, there are some things I have noticed when completing events for gold and karma and would like to share:

1) Find your AOE build: Whether you are a ranger, guardian, necromancer, or mesmer, you should have access to AOE skills at lv80 as these events in Orr are large scale and will require you to tag as many mobs as possible to maximize loot drops.

2) Knowing the Events: You need to know where to go and what to do during events. The best place for gold/drops is to go is on the east end of Cursed Shore near the Penitent and Shelter's Gate Waypoint, alternating between defending Pentinent Camp, Shelter's Gate Camp, and Jofast's Camp, with the occasional escort quest between the three camps. However, as these events can take quite a while to activate at times, the northern area of the map houses multiple escort and champion events for more karma (check chat to see when plinx is up; at the northern skill point of the map).
UPDATE: Since Plinx now takes ages to respawn, best bet is to simply run the three camps

3) Magic Find: Food (Omnoberry Bars or Lemon Tarts), Armor Runes (Superior Runes of the Pirate or Traveler ), Weapon Sigils (Superior Sigil of Luck), Magic Find Jewelery, and Guild buffs all help turning those green drops you will find into those well deserved yellow items

4) Knowing What to Sell: As you will be getting multiple greens and yellows down in Orr you should know who to all of your green and yellow items to. While some green armor pieces can be sold on the TP for profit, a general rule is to sell all greens to vendors, and either sell yellows on the TP, or salvage them for globs of ectoplasm.

5) Being in a group: This not only allows others to tell you when certain events are up, but also can provide more drops and make tagging veterans and champions much easier.
Comparison Chart (Thanks to MFire): http://i.imgur.com/wMSpi.png

6) Material Nodes: Orichalcum and Orrian Saplings can be worth quite a bit a piece so it is wise to know where they are on your server when farming. Since these nodes take approximately 4-5 hours to respawn, you should be able to make time between events to go harvest these locations for some easy cash. I should note that these nodes only change locations when servers reset/update, so I will post a link below showing the current node locations on the Cursed Shore.
Cursed Shore Gathering Locations: http://tinyurl.com/cursedshoreori
Malchor's Leap Gathering Locations: http://tinyurl.com/malchorsleapori
Frostgorge Sound Gathering Locations: http://tinyurl.com/frostgorgesoundori

7) Report ALL Bots: We all find those ranger bots annoying on this server and it does take quite some time to get to lv80, so reporting them will indeed shrink the population killing all mobs faster then you can even get to them.

8) Decreased Loot Finds: Once you have completed 4-5 events your loot drops will begin to downscale until killing a group of 10 mobs will give you no drops. Thank You for ThatOneGuy for givin me the answer to this predicament as that if you switch over to another area (without any orrians) and tag some other types of mobs and do some other events, the loot drops will reset. What I do is either head out of Orr for a bit to farm Frostgorge Sound, WvW, Dungeons, etc, or simply just go farm on random occasions and not to make it a daily chore.

Remember I am still learning about making money in GW2 and am happy to hear all suggestions on what you guys do to either make profit in Orr or out of it!

Good timing on this post since we will be talking about ways to make gold in tomorrows podcast. as for 8*) Anet has put in place an anti botting code that will decrease your loot drops if you keep killing one type of mob without changing. Since most mobs in orr are undead you will want to go zone to another zone and kill stuff there for a little while to reset it. There are still bugs and sometimes it doesn't reset, but that is the recommended fix for now.

This also isn't really doable if your computer doesn't load fast enough. If you don't have enough AoEs to spam cast, it makes tagging the mobs really hard because some events there are too many people which can cause the mobs to load into your screen after they're all dead. It always happens to so I kind of stopped, not to mention it is really awful sitting there farming for hours. :<

On the plus side, thank you for putting that node location up ^^ it'll be super useful especially if it's updated every reset ^^

T1G, you just saved me from madness. So that's why I didn't get a lot of drops

T1G that info is really useful! I have been wondering what was wrong with my drops for the longest of time...but I am still wondering if the mob gimmick is character or account based. For example, if I was to go to orr and farm for 30min than head on an alt for another 30min killing a completely different set of mobs, and then if I returned back to orr after, would I get the same amazing drops as before?

It's not supposed to be across characters or even zones, but I have been hearing reports of it bugging out and you can stay locked in the no loot times till reset. If it happens do a bug report. They were supposed to have fixed it with mondays maint.

Just tried what you said in two different situations. I started with my char in Orr farming about 3 events, then switched to an alt in a low lv zone to play for 20min (accidentally tagging a risen at the 10min mark) and then back to orr I went with my main to do about 3 more events; I ended up with 2 greens and a few blues. Next I stayed on my main but went to Frostgorge sound for about 20min doing random events and when I returned to orr I was bombarded with 4yellows and loot from every mob for about 3-4 events before the loot drops stopped again. It is either that you must switch areas/mobs/events to another focus for a period of time on your main, or maybe just go into a higher lv zone on alt for a bit. I'll keep updating as I learn more on this topic and am curious to see the maintenance note that is posted for monday/today.

Edit: Just tried rotating with an alternate character again and got no loot. I guess you have to rotate mobs with you main. I'll keep updatin as I find most efficient way for gold.

What Anet stated is that its tracking mob types. If you keep killing the same type of mob (undead in orr) you will start hitting diminishing returns. The best found way to fix it is to zone to another area that has different types of mobs to reset the timer. Or supposedly farm slower.

Some people are still reporting that its bugged and wont reset no matter what they do.

So if I were farming in Orr and my droprate would've gotten lower I could theoretically just port to Queensdale, kill some boars and just port back to Orr to continue my farming?
Oh and do you know if critters like rats and rabbits are also counted as a mob type lol?

Since you don't acquire loot from critters I would assume no, but they do have their own kill category in the achievement trackers.

What I did to reset the loot drop was port to Frostgorge Sound, killed about 5 different types of mobs and completed about 2 events before porting back to the Cursed Shore, and when I did I got loot from almost all risen killed. Either it is the different types of mobs you kill, the events, or the combination of the two.
PS: It Seems dungeons don't reset it as well as when it did when I went to Frostgorge Sound so I think its just the amount of different types of mobs you kill.

Question: Does farming ONE type of creature often make your loot drop go down after so long? Or just an area?

I was just curious because I feel like Orr in general without events and staying in one area is an excellent place to farm since Risen are placed like 2 ft away from each other there. I had the hardest time completing those maps, trying to kite just lured more and more Risen, quite aggravating.

the anti bot code is based on type of mob you kill. If you kill the same type (centaurs, risen, drake, etc.) for a while it kicks in. 30 mins I believe. To reset it you should kill other types, which usually means another zone.

OMG I went through that, if you're specced only for damage it's going to be a horrible experience soloing there as an elly. You just die whenever you get 2+ mobs, which is basically all the time >.>;

I tried using the lightning hammer and see if that helps, because the 3rd hit on the #1 attack will area blind the mobs so you can have some leeway in the damage that is being done to you, but it was still super slow killing and I still died a lot :< After a while I realized unless I stacked a lot of toughness/vitality I always had to have a partner run around with me there. It's infuriating otherwise :<

Anywho I'm rambling, lol. HERE IS SOME MORE HELP! Found this little gem of a guide on guru:

There is a picture of his karma/event farming route.

If you don't mind traveling you can always port around and do dragon events while you're farming in Orr.

There's a relatively decent dragon timer, just sometimes there are trolls who mess with it :<

Dungeon running is a decent way to get geared and get gold. Each run of a different dungeon path nets you 60 tokens for the respective dungeon. Consecutive runs of the SAME path will only net you 20 tokens. Each time you run one you get 26 silver, and whatever vendor trash in the chests. 4-5 chests each one giving about 3-4 items. Mostly blues and sometimes greens and yellows. If you run with a good group and keep your repair costs low you can basically make a lot of money in dungeons.

Here's an example: If I run 3 Ascalon Catacomb explorable paths in 3 hours. I can get 78 silver if I don't die. If you open 4 chests in each path and each one gives you 4 blue items, that's 48 blue items you can vendor. (this is just excluding the chance that you'll get a green or yellow which you will and not including mob drops) If you vendor all the blue items at about 50c a piece you can get 24s. So each night without to many deaths and just 3 hours or so I can get myself about 1 gold and 180 tokens for a piece of level 80 exotic armor.

In 3 hours of farming Orr before the DR was implemented I would probably me able to make 2ish+ gold in that time, if I vendored all my loot, TP'd all my yellows, and stayed in magic find gear. It ended up being super annoying because I always had to fight to tag the mobs and it just felt too forced and horribly boring. Now with the DR I find it horribly annoying to even bother with farming Orr unless you just want karma, or unless you believe you're lucky enough to get a exotic legendary precursor drop from a mob ^^

The downside about farming dungeons is that you are limited in stat selection on gear depending on which dungeon you run and you do not get karma from it. (See link above for karma farming route in Orr)

Hope this posts still helps a bit for anyone who needs gold or karma.

Thanks ^_^ that's all real helpful! I haven't really farmed in Orr yet, I usually just slay dragons in between playing with my daughter. I have yet to do the lvl 70 or 80 dungeons as well. I was kind of waiting on finishing my story line... even though I'm lvl 80 I'm still on lvl 76... to do the lvl 80 dungeon. I'm really excited to do some TA EM runs because I want to get the outfit :eek:mg:

I don't know if BRADYGAMES is a reliable source:

Apparently if you farm in parties, there's a hidden bonus to your drop rates giving you another incentive to party with people. That would explain why the Bots roam in packs and are all probably all in the same party.

I've heard that too, about the MF going up a small percent if you are in a group. A lot of people group up for dragons for that reason or if they are farming in the same area together. I'll usually farm some snow trolls in frostgorge if I'm there too early, and people are always adding me to their group.

this is amazing...and those maps of where each node are especially legit...i was trying to make some maps myself

hopefully if i follow this guide i will be on my way to that T3 Norn armor!
