GW2 First Financial Acknowledgement of Guild Wars 2 as a Contender Against WoW

Best quote from the Forbes article for finance people.
"
Short sellers beware, huge profits may lie ahead."
Best Quote from the Forbes article for gamers.
"The bottom line here is that gamers like to start on level playing fields. Gamers love to save money. Gamers are always in a frantic rush to play superior games. These three factors are the main reasons why Guild Wars 2 will win over market share from WoW."

The problem is the phrase "WoW-killer". Arena Net has constantly said it doesn't want to be a WoW killer. They've said that because of the lack of subscriptions, they can't really kill WoW. In fact, no one can but WoW itself. In my opinion, it comes down to psychology. No one wants to discard YEARS of work; and that's exactly what their WoW characters represent. Even if GW2 is a better game; even if WoW goes down the toilet; it is hard for someone to throw away their hard work and start fresh. GW2 will be an amazing game, and WoW will slowly decline, but the term WoW-killer needs to be thrown out.

Mike O'Brien wants to "beat" wow.

It wasn't hard for me to throw it all away once I found something else to truly dedicate my time to. lol

I am not taking this article as a OMG WOW IS DEAD, but it is a good sign of the shifting eyes of pop culture looking at it.

^ Yeah same. I mean I have max level characters I invested years into scattered throughout games, EQ, EQ2, WoW, and I always left when something "better" presented itself as I tend to get bored after several years in the same game. Outside of WoW, nothing better has really come along though until GW2. I've seen this before when everyone actually did leave EQ for WoW. I expect a very similar exodus from WoW to GW2. The part that will be interesting is how GW2 being F2P impacts it. I can see a scenario where people from WoW change to a free game, but I can also see a scenario where they just play both because their subscription cost stays constant.

Will be interesting for sure to see how it plays out.

I wouldn't say its hard to turn away from wow I know lots of people who put ungodly amounts of time and effort into it and just stopped. The thing is its not like people are being forced to stop its that they are getting tired of 8 years of more or less the same game with any "innovation" via expansions not actually doing anything to reignite peoples interest for the game people who stop playing don't have a hard time doing it because they no longer enjoy playing, but for the people who do enjoy the game still i think its more a case of its easier to stick with wow then it is to leave not so much that its actually hard to leave. Though i do agree with you on the term "wow killer" the only thing that is going to "kill" wow is blizzard.

If you read the article you will see why WoW will never become a F2P game. Subscriptions are waaaay too much of their fiscal gain to ever remove it.

WOW will die when titan is released and they stop making expansions for WOW... I hate that term wow killer, too many games try to be like WOW or be "different" from WOW. Just make a good game and stfu. Which is what I feel arenanet has done.

very true, i really like that they've never tried to target any other games out there and say "where better" much the way rift and tera did for example
Yeah, they didn't even have to though. GW1 was very successful .. I'm surprised people didn't talk about ANet like they did Blizz for so long hehe.

I must disagree, in my theory at some point if the game fail to produce enticing content or enable the gamer's addiction the gamer will probably end up "waking up" and realize the time he wasted in grinding his "achievements" they will search for a more "meaningful" game.

GW2 is here to remedy the gaming sickness of the mass who has been forever trapped in the pyramid of hardwork for higher stats for gears. I'm betting most people here mostly played the higher quality P2P games in the past decade but I came from a F2P environment where people throw over hundreds of dollars a month just for "higher stats". I find it quite pitiful that people have the mentality to spam their credit cards to get an edge in their character over others when the game's not even worth investing.

Anyway I enjoy the service and attitude of ArenaNet, hopefully when they become grander their philosophy and style stay the same and do not forsaken us players.

I'm rooting for their success! :D (And perhaps a job position for me in the future xD)
