Learning 2 Miniature with Mallory

Crake

୧༼ಠ益ಠ༽୨ Stronk
So me and the girl decided to try our hand at miniature painting tonight. First real attempt but I think they turned out pretty good! Could use some highlights and such but I don't have a fine enough brush yet. We'll probably do these every now and again so I'll try to post them on here and maybe we can see some improvements as it goes on!

First attempts, Mallory painted the Lizard dude and I did the Half-Orc:

This is something I've always wanted to do, and just never got around to it due to never needing them.

So cool. Chris my next door neighbor slash growing up bestie used to paint this all the time with his friend Bob. Zakis might do it with them now. I always thought they were very cool but never played the game to need them and was too cool in my head to paint them because they meant I was a dork which I was fighting like a closet homosexual. I was a closet gamer :p[DOUBLEPOST=1428591018,1428590997][/DOUBLEPOST]

AND OMG I LOVE YOUR AVATAR!

Man, it looks like Mallory went *sunglasses* hard in the paint.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

But for real I thought about taking up mini painting when I bought Kaosball, but the sheer number of minis that came with that shit was too daunting for me to even make a start. I'd still like to try it, though. How long did those take you?

Well done!

//edit. Usually you'll want to avoid painting highlights for sculpture (unless you mean hair highlights?). The lighting will naturally do it for you. The downside of doing it is that it'll look like you have conflicting or unnatural light sources, something that the human eye is very sensitive to.

I have a 3 hair brush....squirrel I believe. Useful for painting on those much needed orc-eyelashes.

Her paint game is STRONG! (which i guess she would have to be as an artist....)

Every tutorial I watched suggested highlighting especially metals with a lighter shade on the edges so idk man

Well she talks a lot of game but she's not a painter or anything haha.

Oh, that makes perfect sense since they aren't actually made from the raw metal they are emulating. I was thinking facial and clothing highlights. Learn something new everyday!

Don't fight it. Embrace the geek!

PS Crake you and Mallory should make more!

Those look great, especially for a beginner in mini painting.

You don't need a super small brush for the highlights. Just do some drybrushing. Make sure you get a few cheap brushes that you can destroy for drybrushing though, cause they will get decimated from drybrushing. Its quick and easy and gives real good results.

Another thing is get some washes, they will seep into the creases and give shadows which will make the high spots pop.

this is less true in minis because they are so small in real life that exagerated highlights look good.

I did a bit of dry brushing on the base after i textured it, turned out pretty good.

They look great, like you would find them in a store.

I don't think I would be able to resist the urge of making the orc all rainbow colored.
