Mafia

Talking about the forum game (though it could also be played via chat or in RL). I'm curious to know if anyone would like to play it here. :3

For anyone who doesn't know how it works: Before the game starts, a person moderating the game secretly gives each player a role, the most basic being Townies and Mafia, who each try to eliminate the other to win. Cops and Doctors are also used often (more on them below). The game is then played in day and night cycles, usually beginning with the day.

During the day, the innocents try to figure out who's mafia, and everyone can vote to lynch someone, or to not lynch anyone. If a person gets a majority of votes (ex. 4 votes in a 7-person game), they are killed and the game moves to night. Alternatively, if a majority votes to not lynch anyone, no one dies and the game moves to night.

During the night, no one is allowed to talk publicly. Mafia members can communicate secretly, and they can choose to kill a person by secretly telling the mod. Once they pick a victim (or choose no victim), that person dies and the game moves back to day.

Some roles also have abilities that can be used at night, like Cops and Doctors. Both are on the town's side. Cops can investigate a person at night to see which side they're on, and Doctors can protect someone, preventing them from getting killed at night.

There are many many many variations but these are the most basic rules. The minimum number of players for a standard game is 5 (2 mafia, 1 cop, 1 doctor, and 1 townie), but the best is around 9. With 5 it could end after the first day, and that's no fun. :p It's a very psychological game and thus is more fun with people you know well, which is why I thought it might be interesting to try here. I've modded a few games on forums before, so I could do that if there are enough takers. :3

Oh cool. :D Yeah the thematic variations of the game are limitless. I just learned it as mafia, even though there were never any mobsters in the games >.> usually based it on other games like M:tG or Silent Hill or what have you. :3

This reminds me of Trouble in Terrorist Town, a Garry's Mod game where innocents and detectives have to figure out who are the traitors and eliminate them before the traitors eliminate the innocents and detectives. I would love to see this in action.

We'll need someone to GM the game, as well as two+ private sub-forums in order to run secret actions.

Also, the game is surprisingly complex, with an in depth-metagame that allows you to figure out who the bad guys are by examining vote records and seeing how each person votes and has voted

This forum has a sort of private messaging system doesn't it? That should work for the secret actions. (Sub-forums would be kewl though.) I've only modded a couple games before but it's not hard, I can do it. :3

And yes I love the strategy, especially as the mafia/werewolves/assassins/whatevers. Finding flaws in innocent players' actions is soo fun. xD

Hmm yeah, since the PM system can add extra people to it, so it would work...BUT we miss a couple of fun features:

1. Finding out what happened, rereading the old private threads after the game is over.
2. Having a 'ghosts' section where the dead players can talk smack, and discuss who they think killed them etc. Again - to be revealed to all after the game ends.

We can def make this a feature. Give me some time as we have a few updates to implement today and tomorrow then I will hit ya up to walk me through what we need and I will make it!

Ok so this is super confusing. Someone want to explain to me how to set this up? lol

What do you need explanation on Tristan?

You basically have one person who is the leader. The leader assigns random roles to the players, the basic ones are mobster and normal people, but you can have more roles depending on how you play, like mayor, priest, police, etc.

During the day the group decides to kill one person, in hope that it would be a mobster. This is a general discussion sort of thing, everyone gets a vote. Then at night, the mobsters decide in secret, such as another thread or forum, who they want to kill.

The game ends when the mobster out number the normal people, or all the mobsters are killed.

Is how the game basically runs. To set up the game you just kinda pick random people to do random things. Like write everyone's name on a piece of paper and then draw the roles.

SOOOO helpful in terms of how it is played on a forum :)

Sweet! Never played this online before, but I've played the game's werewolf-counterpart plenty of times with friends. Though I imagine this game is pretty darn hard when it's not played face-to-face.

AAh yea we play this game but it is called different. It's not about the mob, but about wherewolves :p
Weerwolven van Wakkerdam? ;)

Tristan:
There's one Game Moderator, and let's say we have 10 players. Two of them would be members of the mafia (they're picked randomly by the GM).
The GM contacts the two mafiosi via "conversation" (PM) here on the website, excluding the rest of the players.
Now the mafiosi have been introduced to each other and they can plot against the rest of the townies in secret. After they've agreed on a townie that they want to eliminate, the GM lets the rest of the players know who's been murdered via the public channel.

The public channel (either a forum thread or a "conversation" including everyone who's participating in the game) is used as Tulzscha described: "During the day, the innocents try to figure out who's mafia, and everyone can vote to lynch someone, or to not lynch anyone. If a person gets a majority of votes (...), they are killed and the game moves to night. Alternatively, if a majority votes to not lynch anyone, no one dies and the game moves to night."

So basically the website has everything we need to play the game. We simply need to find out how many people want to participate and who will moderate the game. For the first game I figure it's best if someone with experience does the moderating.

Edit: On a side note, this could be played via Mumble as well if everyone participating is online. You could play an entire game within an hour (depending on how many players are participating).

As far as setting this up on a forum the bare minimum you need is one thread where people talk and vote during the day, and a private messaging system (of any kind - mumble would work too) for secret role abilities. The mod announces when it's day/night and locks the thread at night if able. People vote/unvote in bold, which the mod keeps a tally of and periodically posts totals, ending the day once a majority is reached. All votes are final. If a person makes the lynching vote and then in another post takes it back before the mod gets on, the day will still end. All posts after the final vote are null.

We could have more though. Diremongoose suggested private subforums for the secret actions/conversations instead of PMs so at the end of the game you can reveal them all and see what everyone did in secret. So one thread for the mafia/werewolves, one for the cop, one for the doctor, etc. and the mod able to see them all. Also another private thread is nice for dead players because they're not allowed to talk in the main thread at all after they die.

Once everyone submits their actions to the mod at night, the mod replies in secret if needed (i.e. cop) and then re-opens the thread, posting who died if anyone and on it goes.

The strategy is harder for the town online but everything everyone says is permanently stuck in the thread. No editing is allowed. So anyone at anytime can go back and see what whoever said/did on whatever day and use it against them. Day 1 is always the hardest. It usually starts with random votes to get people talking and then progressively more serious votes as people post more, there being more to form a case from.
