Moving Stories

So for the first time in my life.. today I actually succeeded in fully packing up my condo in advance of move day. I have moved across the country multiple times prior to this, always stuffing unpacked bags of crap, breaking everything in corners of trucks, losing things along the way. The last time I moved it was local, so I had movers pack it up. Unfortunately, I had not done near what was necessary, so it took them 4x the estimated cost. This time, it was so significantly cheaper to rent a U-haul and use movers at each end to load/unload, I was determined to pack up everything perfectly and finish before leaving for Vegas.

At 43, all packed in advance, I feel like an adult! :p

So tell me your worst moving stories...

Mine was when I was 23 I moved from Austin to Boulder. I had been in Europe for 6 months, so everything was already boxed up and in storage. I had a buddy who wanted to come along for the free ride.. what he failed to tell me, is he gets car sick. I was trying to move on the cheap, and had only rented the U-haul for the day. He kept having to stop to eat, to puke, calling his GF from pay-phones, spending 30 minutes in a roadside bathroom doing god knows what, that I ended up having to pay for going over by the hour so much that it would have been cheaper to use movers.

Then when I unpacked the boxes, it turned out mice/rats/roaches had infested almost all of them.. so I had to throw out about 2/3 of everything I paid to haul.

Not so much a story as a plea for sympathy.. I have actually never lived in an apartment for more then a year prior to my most recent (at 1.5 years now) since 2004. I NEVER prepare to move very well, though generally speaking I haven't had to bring more then a van full of crap with me. I'm dreading the next time we have to move since we have an apartment full of stuff now. Definitely gonna have to hire movers for the next one since I finally have an income that comes along with having a career instead of temporary jobs. It's never fun moving until you are all unpacked and set up haha.

I will admit.. my husband and I made a decision to 'destuff' our lives. So prior to even knowing we were going to move, we spent months getting rid of everything we possibly could (books, high school yearbooks, knick-knacks we've collected, sent family heirlooms back to relatives who want them, CE games, etc). We decided that while we are professionals who can afford it, we don't want a big house that we feel the need to fill. We opted to cut our 3 bedroom house down to a 650sqf 1 bedroom - and ecstatic about it.

Moving 6 months ago from Cali to Chicago was horrible, Moving Company lost 3 of our boxes and didn't show up when they were supposed to,lied about the truck they were bringing and it wouldn't fit where we were moving so i had to rent a uhal have them pack it in there, then i had to drive it to the condo and unload all the stuff myself and then there customer service for getting are lost stuff back was a joke ( still haven't got are things).......still pissed off about it.
