GW2 Novice PvP! (sPvP / WvW) - Taking the fear out of trying PvP!

Have you ever wanted to step out of your comfort zone into the world of PvP? Then this thread is for you!

Let's face it, PvP in any form can be very daunting and unforgiving. No longer are you just playing against the computer, but another bookah out there that has their pride on the line, too!

The aim here is to help you get your feet wet without feeling like you have no backing at all. We'll focus on basics, and lead into some intermediate concepts that will hopefully help you take the fear out of the player vs. player environment.

- Basics:
Self Defense
Positioning & Movement
Maps & Objectives
Combat Basics (Damage / Support / Control)

- Intermediate
Understanding Opponents
Advanced Movement / Keybinds
Building (How to make your skills work for your playstyle)
Skill Management

A lot of these things apply back to PvE, even, especially with the way the GW2 combat system works!

Let's take the fear out of PvP!

--------------

If you're interested, drop a line here in this thread with your name, previous experience (even if none), profession(s), what you're looking to get out of PvP and what format(s) you're interested in.

Yay! Count me in. Thank you so much for offering this. <3

Name: Tribune Drakepounce :>
Previous experience: Modest experience as a protection monk in GW1, mainly in alliance battles (maps with capture points similar to WvW). Occasionally got into the random arenas, got wrecked a lot, but eventually learned how to play competent support *and* stay alive.
Profession: Guardiaaan. Am also slowly leveling along a necro, but guardian is my main by far.

I'm mainly interested in WvW to start (perhaps some sPvP in a few months). Have already jumped in there a bit, love it, but I want to be more efficient/organized/effective at bringing in the points. Fear is not a big issue for me, but confidence in my build and skills definitely is. Right now I tend to follow people that seem like they know what to do... I would like to get a good enough grasp on WvW to be able to lead peeps around to glorious castle smashing.

ETA: I didn't explain my goals very clearly there, hah. My overall goal with PvP of any kind is enjoyment, and making sure teammates feel supported so they can enjoy themselves, too. I'm not a huge fan of running around alone. :p Above are more my personal goals for being skilled enough to meet my overall goal of funtimes for all.

Name: Waldemar The Great
Previous experience: I have played PvP on WoW with my Paladin and my Hunter, and managed to kill players...I was surprised. I have played some sPvP in GW2 and have no experience on WvW what so ever.
Profession: Guardian :D:D

Name: Waldo El Grande
Profession: Warrior

I have liked what I've seen in sPvP but I would really like to do some WvW!! Also just learning from the pro's might be cool :D

I'm excited :D hence the smilies :D

Name: Skyedis Larkhaven
Previous experience: I've played with ARX in WvW already and was party of that epic siege night when we took our first keep. It was a very thrown to the wolves situation and I had to learn a lot in the middle of battle, but would really appreciate a refined discussion on the mechanics of WvW.
Profession: Guardian

I also did sPVP in the beta and was very surprised I was able to get kills too. I'm not looking to join the hardcore sPVP team, but would like to play with other new players and have a good time.

your name, previous experience (even if none), profession(s), what you're looking to get out of PvP and what format(s) you're interested in.

Name: Rhia Aryx
Previous XP: GW1! GvG with Apo :D I haven't seriously done any PvP in GW2 yet, did a bit of WvW on launch night.
Looking to get: That team feeling & satisfaction of getting it right
Formats: sPvP and WvW, but at least until January I won't be joining any hardcore teams. Meaning, if it's a "we meet these days these times every week and you has to be there", count me out. Scheduling I'm cool with, but not with required attendance. It's my last semester, I ain't gonna screw it up.

I'm keeping an eye on this thread. I'll try to get a few things ready for our first little go round. Glad we actually have interest. Remember this is not going to be very hardcore. It's just an intro. :)

I'm not interested in being helped but perhaps I could help you out with the process. We all have gaps in our knowledge and 2 heads are better than one.

Name: Liam Stark
Previous Experience: I did my best to avoid the Guild Wars PvP scene, as the community was pretty nasty. Most fun I had was with guild battles seven years ago. I had a lot of fun in sPvP during the betas, and I feel reasonably proficient with it. I'll likely end up doing a combination of teaching (on the theorycraft side) and learning (on the execution side). I want a comfortable environment in which to make mistakes.
Profession: Yep, another guardian. Offensive this time. I'd be happy to try another of my characters too, like the elementalist.

I'm leaving for Houston tomorrow, so I won't be able to help/join until after this weekend.

I have some experience, and would be happy to lend a hand in "teaching" what I know, but I also have plenty to learn as well, and wouldn't mind doing so in a friendly environment.

Name: Nahku, Nokah
Previous experience: DAoC RvR, WoW BGs and Arena, GW2 WvW and some SPvP
Profession(s): Ranger (traps/melee + longbow), Guardian (support)
What you're looking to get out of PvP: Tighten up WvW tactics a bit more. Get more comfortable in sPvP in terms of supporting my team, mitigating damage/conditions, knowing when to push, when to reinforce, etc.
Format: WvW and sPvP

Personally I seem to have a good grasp on the PvP in guild wars 2. I'm addicted lol, however I play a Guardian as a main, have a pretty legit offensive and a defensive / support build. I would be more then willing to help out if need be. I also have a Warrior and Necro I could play as if my Guardian isn't needed.
