This one is for Bruce, Tristan and Val ( because you always forget :p )

Some of the members of this community can remember a moment where i said: got to go guys, have to go to my korfball training/match.

BUT WTF IS KORFBALL??!

Don't worry, Walds here to explain.

So, Korfball is a Dutch teamsport and is played with a ball that is about the same size of a soccerball, but with more grip and bouncier. A team consists of four guys and four girls. GIRLS AND GUYS??!! OMFG!! Yea.. I know... And yes, I have kissed a girl of the oposing team, even showered together with one after a match. The sport has simularities to netball and basketball. and is played in a variety of countries. ( The Dutch national team is the best in the world, because the sport is most popular in the Netherlands)
Okay so we have the ball and two teams of eight players, but what is the goal? The goal is to score as moany goals as possible, the team with the most goals wins. You score a goal by throwing the ball through the korf ( basket) of the oposing team. Korfball is played indoors and outdoors.
A court is 20x40 meters ( that is about 22-44yd). The field is divided into two halves called zones. In each zone is a 3.5(11.5 ft.)meter high post with a basket at top.( like on the picture).

A korfball match
A korfball match consists of two halves of 30 minutes with a break in between that usually takes about 10 minutes. Two guys and two girls of each team are in each zone. It is not allowed to go to the other zone during the match. Although girls and guys play together, the one on one duels are between members of the same sex. You can defend a different oponent, but he/she has to be of the same gender.
At the start of a game one team ( the home team) chooses one zone of the court. That zone will be the zone the home team will defend, and "their" basket is in it. After each two goals, teams change zones: defenders become attackers and attackers become defenders. At half-time the teams swap zones too.

Physical contact:

Korfball is supposted to be a game where physical contact is not allowed, but the reality is different. Physical contact does not dominate the game, but it is there. ( again, awesome tha bumb into a hot girl of the oposing team and land with your head in between her boobs. Happens some times. Total win :D )
For example: holding, tackling or kicking the other player is not allowed.

Passing and walking:

Another very important rule is about how you pass the ball. This goes by hand, you throw it ( or bounce it, indoors). Kicking and punching the ball is not allowed.
Once a player has the ball in possesion, it is not allowed to dribble. Walking and running are also forbidden. These are two of the core rules of the game. Because you may not walk when you hold the ball, korball is a very tactical and quick game. You cannot really make a solo action, teamwork is required to score. You need the other players to keep the ball moving.

Defending:

A player may not attempt to score when defended. But what is defending in korfball, one might ask?
No worries, Wald is still here to explain..
A player is defended when a player of the oposing team holds his hand up in an attempt to block the ball, looks at him and stands close enough to him to touch his shoulder. You have to be in between the korf and the attacker to succesfully defend. Here is an example of me trying to defend ( but failing, because I can't touch his shoulder):

I will awnser all of your questions about the sport :)

My team:

How many players of each team are on the court at a time? Are you confined to certain areas? Are there positions such as attacker, defender, point guard, bench warmer? What happens in the event of a tie? Why does every person on your team have the exact same color of hair? How can you strike such a cool pose in the second picture and yet have your shirt sorta tucked in like a dork?

Eight players of each team are in the field at a time, four of each team in one of the zones. That makes 16 total. You are confined to the zone you are in, but next to that, not really. There are some roles, like catching the ball after a shot, but my coach has learned us a tactic in wich every teammember can fulfill every job. In event of tie, it is a tie. Nothing more nothing less, nothing special happens. We are Dutch, we all have a little bit of ginger glow on our hair. ( In the summer my beard is kinda orangy). The tucked in shirt was because the referee was bitchin. Official rules say that your shirt must be in your shorts...

A team consists of four guys and four girls. (...) And yes, I have kissed a girl of the oposing team, even showered together with one after a match.

Is this part of the game? And can I pick teams? The opposing teams, I mean? *octo2*

This looks like a cross between ultimate frisbee and basketball; I love it. It would be really awesome if perhaps at the next IRL Guild meeting we could set up a match. I would love to see guild members playing this sport (the blackmail possibilities are endless if we can get video). Anyhow, what other countries, other than the Netherlands, list Korfball as a popular sport?

The whole flirting/kissing/showering with girls of the other team is just something I like to do. But at tournements ( like 5 matches on one day) there is a lot of that kind of action. It is not actually part of the game Jia xD

And CHEZ, that indeed would be great!!
Korfball is popular in Belgium, the Chech Republic, The United Kingdom, China, Thailand, Korea, Italy and some other countries. :)
