A high school biology teacher looks to become a successful mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to prevent extra-curricular activities from being axed at his cash-strapped school.
Starring Kevin James as Scott Voss
Salma Hayek as Bella Flores
Henry Winkler as Marty Streb
and Bas Rutten as Nicco
The movie is a predictable action comedy where the good guy teacher overcomes his apathy and the odds stacked against him to become successful in mma so he can earn enough money to save the music program and his friends job. It doesn't stray from the formula and actually does well for they type of movie it is.
Kevin Jame's acting is done well and not over the top in the comedy department like some of his other movies where he headlines. I like this, the comedy flows well and doesn't seem forced. Kevin slimmed down some for the movie so its not totally unbelievable that he can get in the ring. He is more than pudgy but not a fat slob. In some scenes he actually looks like hes got muscle under a solid coating of fat.
Salma Hayek is there to look pretty but really has no meat in the role she has to play. Her character has some fiestyness and a mind of her own and you know from the start she will end up with Kevin by the end and she does. Her acting is good for what she is given.
Bas Rutten is a real life mma fighter who has gotten into acting and surprisingly he doesn't suck. He is given a lot of range to act and does well with all of it, even pulling off some good "tough guy doing not-tough guy things like running a dance-fighting class at a gym.
Henry Winkler plays the ditsy music teacher who is losing his job and its almost more of a novelty that the fonz is in the movie as an old man than his character being believable.
The directing and editing is done well for this type of movie. It is put together in a way that helps move the story along. Usually in this type of movie great lengths are gone to to get a few laughs. The director kept this to a minimum other than a few scenes like kevin james eating home made applesauce that was left in the back window of a car to go bad then barfing on his opponent after he wins. One thing I like about the writing is that Kevin's character is going into these fights knowing he will probably lose and counting on getting the payday. They don't try to force us to believe he will win with little to no training.
There always has to be a bad guy boss that makes the whole reason for the movie to happen. Greg Germann
is the principal who says the school needs 48 thousand dollars for the music program to stay.
The mma is represented well and kevins rise to fame is put together well. Once he earns his place in the mma world and almost has the money he needs to save his friends job, the ufc takes notice and gives him a shot at the undercard fight. His fight is against Mark DellaGrotte
and gets his ass kicked for the first 2 rounds of the fight. After a pep talk he comes out with fire in his eyes and dominates. It is the least believable part of the movie, but you know it will happen because he needs the money from the win, the payday from the loss just isn't enough to keep the music program.
Here Comes The Boom is exactly what you expect going into the movie. The real surprise is that they pull it off. Not only is it believable that the situation may happen, the writing, acting, and directing is done well and the comedy-actor-lead doesn't make the show about him.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars
