GW2 Newb questions from a newb

I started playing GW2 on Saturday. I've been pleasantly surprised by the gameplay and graphics, but I also had a hard time figuring out some of the basics. Here are a few questions that I have that will help me get on the right track. If there is a wiki or other resource that has all this stuff, please feel free to direct me there instead of answering the questions here.

1. I've noticed that there are at least 3-4 different currencies in use in the game, including regular money, karma, and gems. I've got the money and karma pretty much figured out, but what are gems? I saw I needed them to upgrade my bank space. I'm hoping they are acquired in game and not purchased with real money.

2. I've been equipping every weapon I can find to unlock abilities. The weapon swap system is a lot of fun. Where can I find a good resource for builds/breakdowns of the abilities so I can focus on the ones that fit my playstyle? I'm going to tear up the Ranger section on AltTabMe once I'm done with this post. Is there a good outside resource?

3. I want to postion myself to be able to take advantage of end game content and not have to play catch up. Is there a recommended progresson path (ie events to complete, items to acquire) that I should follow? Or should I just be a free range chicken and run randomly through the countryside?

4. The crafting system seems very complicated to me. Is there a good place to learn about that? Such as, what items are worth my time to salvage and what recipes or discoveries should I focus on.

I think I'll stop there for now. I appreciate getting pointed in the right direction.

I don't know all the answers but hopefully this can help you with your questions.

1. Gems can be bought with RL money or you can transfer gold for gems. Gems are used to buy things on the Gem store, it costs 800 gems to buy another character slot. There is also other currency's. Dungeon currency's. They differ from each dungeon and can be obtained in explorable mode. The vendors to use the dungeon currency are located in LA.

2. I focus on my play style and not what others feel best. If you don't like what other peoples use you won't enjoy playing your character.

3. What I did to get to 80 on my first character was do 100% map completions. They give you the most reward. Do event's that are close by. Crafting also helps a lot in leveling, but it does require time to farm, or money to get the crafting items.

4. For the crafting system it is a lot different than other MMO's, such as wow. There are guides online that you can lookup. It's usually repetitive in each tier.

3. What end game content :) Not your typical end game here. When you Hit 80 you are pretty much ready to do it. You CAN get better gear but that is not hard nor does it take much time.

4. Salvage kits are explained in our last podcast how to make money.

1. Gems can be bought with gold or real money. I haven't payed any real money in the game other than the purchase price and I don't lack for gems when needed. There are some things that are really worth buying for gems like boosters, black lion keys, char slots, bag slots, forge stones. None are needed (unless you are making a legendary) but they are useful. Then there are fluff items like outfits you can buy

2. gw2guru.com forums has good class sections, and check out our sections here.

3. Really everything in the game gives experience except for spvp. crafting, exploring, killing, wvw, heart quests, dynamic events, gathering... the list goes on. Do what you like and you will level. I do think if you do an area in pve you should complete the whole area to get the 100% bonus exp and rewards

4. Crafting seems hard till you get the hang of it. You want to do discoveries instead of making multiples of any item. our useful guides section has some awesome links. Salvage kits were discussed in the last podcast and this one today I will clarify with some new information.

2. gw2guru is very good for builds like TIG mentioned, but try and skip the baw/QQ threads because they may be offputting if you already like a class.

3. The biggest help I can give you when trying to level fast is to stick to your level mobs/quest area and always hit the DEs even if you only get a bronze. Killing yellow mobs will also give you a lot of bonus experience if they weren't killed recently. The amount of bonus experience you get from them is determines by the time they spawned. If no one has killed them in the last hour you get more than if someone just killed them in 1 minute.

4. Crafting is a huge money sink. If you're not using it regularly to equip yourself with armor/weapons (buying off the TP is usually cheaper than using the mats you can sell) then I would suggest you save it for when you need to get a few levels quickly and have the money for it or at level 80 if you want to craft exotic weapons/armor for youself.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I've been reading over some of the guides, and I already feel much better about how to get stuff done. The crafting guide is extremely useful and made me feel good about my leatherworking/huntsman choice for my ranger. I'm an explorer/completionist type, so I def will take ThatOneGuy's advice and complete the zones. I completed the human capitol city on day 1, and I'm almost done with Queensdale.

I just found out about the whole resource gathering thing (I need to equip to gather?? doh!) so I'm a little behind there, but I'll get it going.

The more I read of the guides, the more I realize that everything I know from past experiences with MMOs is WRONG (OK, shoot first, and ask questions later still holds true). This isn't bad because the game actually appears to be well put together, but I feel like I'm fighting against myself and all my old habits. I feel like a green muppet is whispering "You must unlearn what you have learned" in my ear as I balance upside down, one handed on a rock in a stinky swamp while a cute little astromech driod warbles softly that I'm doing everything WRONG. You know what I mean.

This is the absolute truth. You should check out some of our earlier podcasts we kinda talk about the WoW Mentality vs the GW 2 one. The game really is different. From collect and return to explore and conquer. Listening to your environment is so important it will tell you if things are happening.

I kindly ask you never to use the "word" newb again.-brucestopit-
Could you do this for me? Would make me happy :) :eek:mg:

I recommend : noob, or maybe something closer to your word of choise:newbie.-brucethumbsup-

With kind regards of a fellow noob,

Wald

I'm sorry that you were put off by my word choice, but I stand by it.

In general, my experience has been the word "newb" (or "newbie" as you pointed out) used to describe some one new to a game or experience, but not a complete idiot with an eagerness and capacity to learn.

"Noob," in my experience, means one who is new to a game or experience, but they are a complete moron and altogether unteachable.

IE Gamechat:

Newb: Hey! I just started playing, where can I find a bank?
Noob: OMG! U R a stoopid n00b!
Helpful player: It's jsut inside the main gate on the right hand side.
Newb: Thanks!

Noobs wipe groups, then blame everyone else, ninja the loot, and log out.
Newbs wipe the group, apologize for the mistake, and try not to do it again.

So I stand by calling myself a "newb," but don't worry. After a couple days of playing and reading through the guides, the title will no longer apply.

PS- nice pony. My daughter would approve.
