Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Closed Beta Applications Are Open!

Final Fantasy XIV has gotten a new development team after the first version wasn't that good according to most people playing it. A Realm Reborn is a newer, better version of the game and Square Enix has finally opened the beta applications!

Yes, that's a new graphics engine

PS: According to the Roadmap the first phase of the closed beta will take place during mid-february.
 
I'm actually looking forward to it.. FFXI was one of my favorite MMO's being one of my first but this new version looks tempting. Wouldn't leave GW2 but might be something to fool around with on down times.

Also their new trailer looks just amazing. Very well put together and got me hyped on the story at the very least.

I already applied for the beta, hope I get an invite.

 
I still remember being a beta tester for the first version. I had just sold my computer from back then and just when I sold the thing I got a mail telling me the beta had started lol (I was waiting a really long time for it as I'm a Final Fantasy fan).

Anyway, heard the game wasn't that good so I didn't bother to get it. The new version looks really good though.
 
yeah i really wanted to play this game V.1 but Square Enix really makes non US residents jump trough hoops to be actually able to PAY! lol funny... I'll try to get into beta and figure out how to pay later on i guess.
 
The re-release has been on my radar for quite a while. I was waiting SO PATIENTLY for the PS3 release of the first release (which obviously never happened). I will definitely be checking it out at launch if the beta is not friendly to me. <3 Thanks Raz!
 
Applied as well. I played XI for about 7 years. Played version 1 of XIV for the trial month and it was really bad.

This looks like it can be a lot better. Hopefully it is.
 
I just want a hardcore mmo. GW2 is great, I love it, but the only thing hardcore about it is cosmetics and SPvP (and to some form WvW, but not really). I want to stand out in a game again, without playing pretty princess dress-up.

To be honest, you didn't miss anything. I was really psyched for XIV since I loved XI so much and it was such a big part of my life for years. I played the beta and it was beautiful, but absolutely terrible. Everything but the graphics were a mess. Nobody I knew wanted to play the game after the beta, so I quit as well. I still played XI here and there for the last couple of years, but I didn't/don't have a LS anymore and I'm so far behind in progress, that I usually just log on for the holidays and collect the new things (much like I've been doing in GW2 the last couple of months and WoW for a year). I'm hoping for the best with XIV 2.0, but it still looks a tad boring. It IS much improved though, so there's that. It would be great if we all could play together (and it doesn't suck)! <3

My brain is already fighting the idea of playing XIV, because I haven't been playing all the time it's been out and I'm behind those who have been, lol. OCD is a cruel mistress.

Everything is wiped, so the only thing we'd be missing is achievements (a lot like GW1/2 HoM style stuff). I'd be sad at first, but would get over it VERY quickly if it's a good game!

Hmm. The roadmap says that you can use your 1.0 characters in the beta. I just assumed that meant that the characters would be saved. If it is wiped, then yay. I can actually start an MMO from the beginning(ish) again! Of course I did that with GW2 and I still got behind, because I couldn't farm for hours, and I refused to buy gems with real money. Sigh. I used to be so ahead of the curve. Now I'm all grown up and stuff. /old

I'm 95% sure upon the re-release, there will be no characters from 1.0. Maybe they changed their mind, but I'm pretty sure they are working at a completely new system and trying to intigrate those kinda things would leave it a mess programming wise. It'd pidgeonhole them into making the same game (which is exactly what they DON'T want).

Edit: Allowing them for beta might just be so they can experience different areas of content, not unlike WoW's system of "migrating" characters into patch/expansion betas.
