LARP

Well, having had a fun game at a LARP this past weekend, I thought I'd see if there were any fellow LARPers or people interested in LARPing.

I got hooked on LARPing during my college years when we'd run around on campus and fight each other with foam swords. It wasn't LARPing then, more like sword-fighting practice. Had the cops called on us 3 times, I think. Apparently, people attacking each other with sword-like objects looks suspicious. After that, a friend of mine invited me to go try out a game he was playing. I did. I never went back.

I actually got involved in my current LARP through a buddy at my old job. He had just found a new game and happened to mention it to me one day. I tagged along for the first event I could and I haven't missed a game since. I'm on my 3rd year at this game.

Since LARPs come in a ton of variety, I should mention my particular is a PvE, combat-focused fantasy LARP. Basically, we focus mostly on killing monsters and going on adventures. I currently play a fairy monk. Unarmed fighting (we just use 2 very short weapons to fight with) and lots of status effects.

So, any questions about LARP for you curious people out there? Any people interested in playing? If you have any interest at all, I'd recommend giving your local LARPs a chance. They're everywhere and it's a ton of fun. Great way to spend a weekend.

I am definitely curious about LARP, have been for a while, but wasn't really sure how to jump in to it or find a group to play with... plus I'm a noob and a little intimidated by it all. I was a theatre major in college, but that was a century ago ;). I like role play, cosplay, anything involving fantasy, dress-up and tin foil lightning bolts. *grin*

Do you LARP in public parks? Private backyards?
Do you make your own costumes or rent?
How do you develop your individual character or is there an existing storyline?
Is it like a renaissance fair without the turkey legs?
Is there a fee to LARP? Like an admission charge? Are there LARP associations or conventions?
Any website links? (I could google, but I would like to talk to someone who has or is doing it.)

I would love for us to do an AltTabMe meetup at some point and be able to have some serious LARP, but I would think we'd all end up cracking up, breaking character and drinking too much beer. :)

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience Hyomicca! Any video from your LARP weekend btw?

I LARP every month at the uni playing World of Darkness. I don't really do much dress up personally, but I like to have a couple of symbolic props. Here's me (left) and a friend at the Uni freshman fair last month. We were asked to pose for the Women's Health stand which I why I'm holding a pink thing that they handed me!

My current LARP rents out a campsite (like with cabins and a kitchen/dining area and large bathrooms. Like where you'd go for a summer camp as a kid or something). When it was first starting up, they played for a day in someone's backyard. It's gotten a lot bigger since then and this last game had something like 70 people playing.

Our costumes are whatever we can pull together. Some people make theirs, but a lot of us like to piece together an outfit from stuff we find at thrift stores. Of course, people are free to be as detailed or as simple as they want, but it's recommended that it doesn't look modern.

Character backstory is generally entirely up to you. The character personality is what you want it to be. The game just provides rules for abilities you can perform in game and the method for developing those abilities and getting stronger. There's a plot team that writes storyline that affects players and the town as a whole. There is an existing overall story line that's been slowly developing over the course of the game.

My particular game isn't fair-like at all, lol. Mostly because we focus more on combat than RP. We're also a pretty casual group. We like to crack jokes and act silly a lot, but we can be stay in character pretty well if we need/want to. Some people just fight and do much RP at all. Some people are mostly there to RP. People have varied tastes.

Almost all LARPs charge a fee. The one I go to is $25 a weekend, but I've heard of some upwards of $100. Never seen a LARP convention. There are a couple national LARP games though. They have chapters all over the country and you can play your character at any of them. I attend a locally made and ran game.

http://www.ornlarp.com/ is the one I attend currently. There's people on there you can talk to about LARP almost all the time.

I LARP "A Night In The Lonesome October" every Year.
"A Night In The Lonesome October" is a Book by Roger Zalozny, which celebrates Horror Genre in such a cute way.
It starts the last night of September, and extends to the early morning of November 1st.
We stick to the book, and each night we LARP the parts of each of our characters best we can.
The group I LARP with just does it where ever we can get away with it.
I LARP "Greymalk" the cat, in my Fursuit.
My best friend LARPs "Needle" the bat, in his Fursiut.
It's a great way to celebrate our love of Horror Genre.
LOL and ANY chance we have to get together in costume, and LARP, we do it!
There are no fees; but we all chip in for Denys each night :D

In your experience are there many older LARPers? Say 35+?[DOUBLEPOST=1366256630,1366256559][/DOUBLEPOST]

I really enjoyed that book. A great read for any who haven't yet... and I can totally see that being LARPed.

We have a few people in their early/mid 30s. Other games I've visited have had plenty of 30+ players as well. It's definitely not unusual.

Horror is not a genre for me. But it's cool that you guys get together and do your own little thing. Truth be told, I kind of wish I had another LARP I could go to. I don't get to play enough.

I cannot handle horror, trust me... but this is more macabre I would say. You might enjoy it.

If there is some sort of Star Wars, sci-fish stuff, that would be the place for me to start. I already almost joined the 501st Legion with an Imperial Officer costume I was pulling together, but life got in the way. That was a few years back and I still might join my local chapter. Those folks not only enjoy doing that stuff but they do good stuff, like raise money for childrens charities etc.

I've heard of a Firefly LARP before, but I don't think they're running anymore. They were really expensive. There's also a few LARPs that use Airsoft guns and some are sci-fi themed. I've never been to one, but I know people who have.

Oh man Firefly? That would be epic. I wouldn't mind airsoft, I play a lot of paintball as it is.

that gun looks like Han Solo's pistol with a silencer on it. Do laser guns even need silencers? In stead of PEW PEW PEW it would be meep meep meep.
