[Jul 6, 2013] Smite F2P Saturday! (Smite, mumble)

ToxicAsF

Over Analystical Extreme Gambler
Alright everyone, this week we will feature Smite as our F2P Saturday event! Depending on who is online, we can try to organize some 3v3 or 5v5 matches against guildies, or get into small teams and do some random matches.

Remember to download the client prior to the event, and start it AT LEAST ONCE in order to initiate patches! You will also need to have a hi-rez account (free of course).

Edit : AS PER SOME VETERAN RECOMMENDATION - PLEASE PLAY THE TUTORIAL PRIOR TO THE EVENT.

For those that aren't really into MOBAs (like me), this isn't your typical MOBA. It's a lot of fun, and would be especially fun if we would get 6+ people so we could do some guildies vs. guildies private matches. :eek:mg:

Rooster Teeth did a great explanation of the game (and they're just awesome peoples):

And here's their hilarious "Let's Play" that I'm double posting, just because: :alien3:

Thanks Nahku !

And I typically hate MOBA's as well. DOTA, LoL, etc. I hate them. Except for Smite. It feels more like an MMO PvP battle than it does a MOBA, with actual WASD control and such. Not that point and click crap.

Also, I may have family stuff to attend to that day. Not sure yet. I know it's a holiday weekend, but if people can make it, it'll definitely be a fun time.

Love this game! Been awhile since I played, usually hate moba type games but this is fantastic will definitely be there if I'm around my computer on Saturday.

That video is hilarious.. however, I believe I will sit out of the first game or so until people have a basic idea of things. *crabs*

Could always teach people! Think of it as daddy training. I mean, you're a farmer now. Isn't that what farmers do? Have like 10 kids to help work the fields?

I'm the one that gets stuck with that shit in everything. Tristan posted Smite on the site and the people that came to play, he and you weren't around to teach anyone anything. Haven't logged on in at least a week. It gets tiring, especially if you're just playing to play, not to teach.

Don't teach just dominate, like Jack did in that lets play. Half the fun in friendly group play is screwing up and laughing about it.

Sure, if you're the one screwing up. How do you dominate with people that have no idea what they're doing on your team? You need 6 people for that 3v3, otherwise it's all people on your team.

I've been teaching those that want to learn :alien12: (though I'm probably not the best qualified to give advice).

And yes, this will just be for fun, fuckin' around and killing each other with crazy gods. If we queue against other people, then yes, please at least play the brief tutorial, it's actually pretty well done.

I don't mean your team dominating, I mean you. Jack was level 17 while the rest of the guys were stuck around 9 or so. Just have fun on Sat and don't worry if people suck or not.

"Gotta love windows restarting"

Hahaha happened to me on many occasions. Taught me to update my computer when it told me

I'll be out of town with no internets next week. I'll just bug Belial until he lets me play with him when I get back.

The problem with this, when going against other non-TAB players, is that this is very much a TEAM game. Every push, attack, defense, whatever, only really works when players are working together and know how to use their gods to best help the team. It's nearly impossible to solo dominate when going against another team of relatively competent players. When you're not backed up by your team, you pretty much just die over and over and over again... which is no fun for anyone.

If we're just going to be doing TAB v TAB matches... ie, the 3v3 or what have you, of course people should jump right in, of course it'll be fun regardless of how well either side does.

If we don't have enough people for that, however, I agree with the suggestions that folks should get some practice time in. Play the tutorial. Watch some of the guides they've made for gods. Learn what items you should get for what gods. There are a lot of resources for learning the game built-in to Smite. Of course those of us who are playing already will be happy to help where we can, but those just jumping in will save a lot of frustration on both sides by making use of those resources.

tl;dr - We should probably try to play some 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5 all-guild games for the event, at least to start. I personally think it'd be a blast, especially all being on mumble together and talking trash... I mean providing encouragement.. :alien3:

The nature of the Smite matchmaking system kind of punishes new players queuing together in groups, unfortunately. If we have a group of 5 and enter the casual queue, we'll get paired against another group of 5 (and sometimes the game can't even find another group, so we get re-queued and wait longer). Sure, they could be total newbies as well, but odds are pretty high that they are semi-experienced players on voice comms that will rofflestomp anyone that's brand new to the game.

I'm totally fine with getting owned for the sake of playing together for fun on a F2P guild event, but for day to day playing, it can be a little frustrating when people have no clue what an ultimate skill is or what active abilities do for you, etc.. The cool part about the Assault gamemode is that you get a random god, so everyone playing likely isn't 100% awesome with the gods they get chosen for them (unless you luck out and get one of your mainstay characters). I have a max level account and a level 20 account, and I'm still absolute shite with 80% of the gods still, which is why I love assault... it helps you learn new gods in a fun/casual environment. :alien7: Some gods I used to hate getting stuck with (Vamana, I'm looking at you), I'm starting to enjoy playing more and more, for example.

The game is friendly to new players in that it has an auto-level system for skills, and an auto-buy system for items. This makes is "easy to learn" but the mastery part comes when you turn off the auto-buy/level stuff and start tailoring your own item builds and ability leveling order. That simply just takes a little bit of time to get comfortable with, but after you figure out what works and what doesn't work, it's pretty straightforward. (ex: buy boots first for speed buff. facing a magic-heavy team?.. build magic resist items. etc..). In the short term though, you can just leave auto-buy and auto-level on and be assured that it's making fairly reasonable choices for you. You can even fine-tune that auto-purchase item order for each god, offline in the Guides > Character Builder page within the game.

I'm happy to set up a 1v1 joust with people if you want to play around and learn the abilities, take it slow, and get some feedback. Again, I'm by far no expert in the game, but I can help with the basics and give some feedback. But honestly, the tutorial is good, and I also really recommend just going to Play > Practice > Joust (solo/co-op), and play against the computer a few games. It really helps understand what's going on, and it's a fun and low-key way to practice gods and look around in the item store.

Or... just show up and press all the buttons. /allthethings
