Trying to add some 'new' stuff to my life and looking to others for some recommendations.

Let me hear your recommendation on a book to read, movie to watch and dish to cook (or eat somewhere, but I'd prefer to try to make it myself).

Genre/food-type is unimportant (although I generally stick to sci-fi/fantasy books, so anything beyond that is great)

thanks team!

And to start the ball rolling for anyone else who's interested, my recommendations are (100 Years of Solitude - to be fair I'm only about 25% through it, but its great so far , The Prestige - great 'magician' movie and it was my first venture into the work of the Nolan brothers, and Bánh - when it comes to Asian sandwiches, nothing else comes close)

Have you ever tried to get into classical music? You can start off easy by videogamemusic that has been turned into orchestra pieces:
Symphonic for example:
Fantasies - Music from Squaresoft

Odysses - Music from Nobou Uematsu

East meets West - Music from various games

Legends - Music from Nintendo

And here some various music:
Actraiser

Shenmue

I can send you more. Just let me know.

For books I can recommend you "Oh my" of George Takei. It´s a fun read.
If you like something more complex go for Black mass of John Gray. It´s a book about how religious and political movements are going to fail.

Other than that? How about learning an instrument? Or a language?

So this site does autoembed, good to know.

Musically I find myself to be pretty diverse already - I listened to hours and hours of classical music while doing my first degree actually.. Black Mass seems like a good read though, thanks!

Sadly I don't watch a lot of movies...
I don't really read a lot of books besides manga... And even there, I haven't branched out myself lately.
And food... I'm in the process of trying out a lot of different restaurants myself, but all within my area of stuffs...

I feel a little shitty I have nothing cool to offer new for you haha.

If you like fantasy, one of my favorite authors is Stephen Lawhead. He specializes in celtic lore. He has a really good series about Arthurian legend, as well as a pretty decent Robin Hood trilogy, which recasts him as a Welshman.

A short book that changed a lot of my views of religion is How to be a Christian Without Being Religious. It is written for a Christian audience, but it provides a good perspective about it.

For personal development, I've gotten into John Maxwell. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is a very good, practical book. I also read Leadership Gold recently, which is really for leaders way beyond my depth, but was still very good.

Book - Oryx and Crake and then Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood
Movie - Unknown White Male
Dish - Pad Thai

This is a pretty fun idea :)

GROW A BEARD (would have been a totally appropriate response :D)

I'll check out the movie, I've read the books (both fantastic, although I liked Oryx and Crake more) and traveled through Thailand so had lots of Pad Thai :)

Have you tried Ethopian food? I've heard good things and I've been meaning to try some myself. Maybe check out some of those dishes? Also, I agree, Oryx and Crake is the winner. The third book is supposedly coming out soon!

For food, try Korean. They wrap rice and chicken or fish in lettuce or seaweed and eat it with kimchi. It can be surprisingly tasty and VERY spicy.

I actually just bought a jar of kimchi relish - it's unreal. I make a Korean burger so use it on there

Oh! Ok. I got something for you. I've been on a sushi kick lately. But I've been going to a "new-agey composed" sushi place. Instead of traditional maki or sashimi, they add unique things to it. I had a tuna sashimi that was served with an olive oil, mango and slightly hot pepper garnish on it. Another one that was a hot eel wrapped in seaweed with a small piece of smoked bacon and something else.

If you do sushi, try to do a "anything goes chef menu" where they make things as they feel and charge per piece. It gets costly, but it's one of the best ways to experiment without putting much thought into it.

Yeah, you should defeinitely try Ethiopian food. I'd suggest trying whatever type of sample plate the restaurant offers. It's generally a massive dinner plate with 4-8 different types of food (although its basically forms of mush/small bits of meat) on a plate of bread, almost like a thinner naan. Really good stuff though (Pic is from the local joint I go to)[DOUBLEPOST=1374849619,1374849570][/DOUBLEPOST]

That sounds awesome! Eel is my staple at sushi

I tend to stick to yellow tail if I want safe, but I do love toro (fatty tuna), eel and octopus. But I'll try just about anything. I just don't care for "crab cake" or "tuna salad" style stuff that some places make. I hate that mushy texture.

Try White Tuna

I really, REALLY want to like sushi, so I keep trying it. And keep not liking it. Maybe I'm not eating good sushi.

Is it the consistency or just the 'raw fish' aspect? As Bruce mentioned, a lot of times you can find something great by asking for the chef's recommendation. Even letting them know that you're fairly new to it (so they don't give you something crazy)

Depends on MANY different factors. The style of sushi, the type of fish, what it's served with, and who made it. I wish I could bring you to a sushi place, because every place handles things differently, even though the true art of sushi is one very specific form of craft and, traditionally in japan, takes over a decade to be considered "experienced" in making it, never mind mastering it.
