Men's Fashion Tips: The Essentials

If any of you were in the chatbox this morning, you probably saw me freaking out when I was talking to Gyoin and Baldoraxx as they described their wardrobe to me. Based on what I read, it was apparent that a fashion guide was needed.

As a disclaimer, it takes a long time to develop one's sense of style, which will continue to evolve throughout the course of one's lifetime. My goal with this post is to provide those lost souls with a place to start as they work towards expanding their closet.

The Essentials: Here is a list of what EVERY man should have in his closet, no matter what.
  • White oxford shirt (multiple, if possible)
  • A pair of fitting, dark-washed jeans
  • Dark, solid color tie
  • Navy blazer
  • "Adult" trainer Shoes
  • Grey crew neck T-shirt
  • Black V-neck jumper
  • Neutral-colored chino pants
  • Black dress shoes with laces
  • Medium grey suit
  • Black belt without a huge buckle
  • A nice watch

Footnotes:

White oxford shirt: this goes with just about EVERYTHING. You can dress it up with a blazer or dress it down with a pair of jeans. If you find one that fits you well and is of high quality material (cotton will do just fine), buy multiple.

Dark-washed jeans: find a slim, fitted pair (read: not SKINNY but rather not BAGGY) so that you can mix and match them with a blazer or a casual t-shirt. Try many pairs made of good quality and don't be afraid do spend a lot of money on a good pair, as they will last you for years.

Dark, solid color tie: this is simple enough to go with anything. Neutral colors are the safest way to go if you want to be conservative. Once you get more comfortable you can get brighter colors or even ties with texture to add that extra bit of detail.

Navy blazer: there are so many things to do with a blazer. You can dress up just about ANY outfit and it can be worn to both casual and evening events.

"Adult" trainer shoes: those tennis shoes you wear at the gym are not meant for wearing when you dress to impress. Look for Stan Smith's, Chucks, or Vans.

Grey crew neck T-shirt: this is another versatile piece that can be worn alone or in layers. Grey goes with just about everything so you can pair it with a blazer and slacks for a semi-formal event or with dark jeans and trainers for Sunday morning brunch. When I don't want to think on the weekend my staple look is a grey t-shirt, dark jeans, and chucks.

Black V-neck jumper: this is a timeless piece that has saved me on many occasions. You can pair it with slacks for a formal look or with a t-shirt and jeans for a more casual look. If I'm not in the mood to iron my oxford for work I just throw this baby over it and rush out the door. I also have this in gray and dark blue for layering.

Neutral-colored chino pants: pick a neutral color like grey or beige since these can be matched with a lot of other pieces. NO PLEATS, AND NO CUFFS

Black dress shoes with laces: you wear these with a suit, slacks, or even jeans when needed. Enough said.

Medium grey suit: this is a versatile piece and one of the most important parts of your wardrobe. Use it for important meetings, weddings, interviews, club parties, etc. You don't need a million suits, but rather one high-quality suit that is specifically tailored to your body.

Black belt without a huge buckle: in general, belt color matches shoe color. Unless you are in Texas rocking a cowboy look, don't get a huge buckle.

A nice watch: no, not the one you bought from Walmart. Buy a nice one from Fossil or another reputable designer. Nothing is sexier than a man that sports a nice watch. It is the pinnacle of sophistication and one of the few accessories we have as men.

Our society places high value on appearance, so there is no reason to not build your wardrobe and look the part in every aspect of your life. Obviously you want to look good at work, but you never know who you will bump into at the grocery store or at other social events. And all you married folk, that is no reason to look sloppy. I would call my man out if he looked a mess.

There is a wealth of information out there if you want to dive much deeper into this. I know most of you boys on here use reddit in some capacity, so go to the /r/malefashionadvice subreddit and click on the "Getting Started" guides on the right side to find more in-depth guides from our reddit fashionista community.

Let me know if you have any questions! And yes, I am superficial. Get over it.

If anyone has something to add, reply to the thread! Hope this helps!

Zorph's fashion guide:

1 - Plaid Shirts! They're great and go with nothing! Wear them all the time, wear two at once!
2 - Corduroy! Because we can!

That is all.

Man you'd hate my closet Mille.

I've got one suit and 3 or so button down shirts and like 3 dress polls with 1 or two pairs of khakis.

My wardrobe primarily consists of loose fitting jeans( I'm talking comfortable not the stuff those savages and ghetto people wear)and geeky or gaming t-shirts...I got a million of those.

Cargo shorts for the summer.

Pajama pants for the cold weather months lounging inside and gym shorts for the summer.

Hoodies and down jackets for when it's cold too. Also baseball caps and plenty of cold weather hats. Side note Janye's Cunning Hat is a must have for the winter.

I make it a personal mission to be as comfortable as all hell, regardless of how it looks to people.

I think this stems from the fact that I wear a uniform 8 to sometimes 16 hours a day 4 days in a row for work. Then you add the fact of transports which require me to wear a duty belt that is easily 20+ pounds depending on what I have on it. Then you can add the bulletproof vest with steel trauma plate to that.

Basically anytime I'm not in uniform I want to be comfortable and I don't give a rats ass what other people think. Apologies for the long post and if it sounds like a rant. It's not though, just explaining things.

Every once and a while though you gotta throw on a dress and get in touch with your feminine side though =P

I can look sexy, and always travel with the suggested + a few more (good list by the way).
Honestly though, I never wear a watch. These days I have my cellphone as a go to dictionary, timepiece and schedule. Damn thing is used for anything but phone calls. lol

However other than work I'm in crappy trainers. I kinda miss the days of dating and being social with the business crew, still my cleaning bills are zero now.
I do everything but the dry-clean ones my self. Sometimes I even towel steam clean the dry clean ones to get an extra wear or two out of them.
In the summers in Tokyo, pretty much naked. Cant wait to have a real job and afford to run the A/C again!

Good god I'm a cheap old bastard...
But, I clean up nice:

I had a fossil watch. Wore it all the time 2 months later. Battery was dead. Didn't take the time to fix it and so it sits in my desk drawer never to be seen again.

I have a phone which tells me the time so a watch is pretty pointless nowadays anyway.

There are words in here I don't understand.

I have a suit and a very nice watch my stepdad gave me. I wear dickies to work in lieu of dress pants cause i crawl under desks. I also have work polos i wear. Other than that. More dickies and nerdy shirts.

Wow... this is the exact opposite of my wardrobe.

1. If it has buttons that act as the main purpose to close the shirt, throw it away.
2. If it isn't a V neck of some sort toss it away (not the stupid ones that guidos wear)
3. If the pants aren't harem, they are not worth it!
4. SKINNIER PANTS THE BETTER but LOOSE in the waste so you can eat more!
5. BLACK is the only color you need, but if you MUST incorporate other colors start with maroon or red. White if you are working out.
6. Converse or boots, nothing else.

Dejamal's wardrobe:

Shirts.
Pants.
Shoes of some kind.
A suit, for funerals and weddings.[DOUBLEPOST=1420653586,1420653185][/DOUBLEPOST]Actually I have started wearing sweaters in the winter. I hate having sleeves, I roll up my dress shirts pretty much every day unless a client is here (because, as we know, your business acumen decreases if you bare your forearms or wear pants made of the wrong material). But it's so fucking cold right now, and also I got a couple ones that look nice and don't feel like you've encased your body in steel wool.

I do as well. I have a hard time with things around my wrists. Can't really do watches.
I actually don't wear a watch either because I have woman wrists and don't wanna wear a woman watch. But I do believe it is more of an accessory piece than something you use for time.

PS the responses to this thread are amazing. I should visit each of you and do a queer eye for the straight guy.
