Back to something more easy, but you will need one additional thing. PS1 Emulation.
The Emulator we are using will be ePSXe.
To connect a original PS 1 controller you want to use: http://www.amazon.co.uk/PS1-PS2-Controller-Adapter-Converter-x/dp/B00241IRK8
I would recommend though getting this and use a PS2 controller: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mayflash-PC035-3-in-1-Magic-Joy/dp/B0059HNGHI
Just unpack it. This Emulator requires a bios. You can get it by googeling "scph1001" for the american bios. Just put the file into the bios folder.

Next would be some plugins:
Pete OpenGL works best with Nvidia cards and Pete D3D works best with Ati cards, so pick the one that is best for you. Both can be found here. Just drop them in the plugin folder.
Once you are done start the ePSXe.exe and a wizard will pops up.
2/7 select the USA bios.
3/7 select the plugin you just uploaded above.
4/7 For now select the core plugin. If you are a audiophile, I would recommend to try out all plugins available and check which one works best for you.
5/7 You are all using Win7 right? Just pick the WNT/W2K core one
6/7 Here you can configure your controller, so plug it in and map everything where it is supposed to be.

And with this you are done and can start playing games on your PS1 Emulator. Since PS1 is using cds, the new search term is no longer rom but iso. So if you want to play the original Metal Gear Solid you would serach for "Metal Gear Solid iso" on google.

Since there is a pletora of different plugins to use, I will not give a description what every single thing does. But feel free to ask me below.

Just a handful of games since I am lazy today:
Final Fantasy 1-9
Metal Gear Solid
Chrono Trigger
Road Rush
Castlevania Symphony of the night
Legend of the Dragoon
Legend of Mana
Parasite Eve 1+2
Tail of the Sun
Vagrant Story
Wild Arms
