Ask Me Anything / Germany edition

How do Germans feel about expats? Also is it feasible to same day air mail me weisswurst once a month? *lick:

EDIT: Actually thats sort of stupid of me for assuming; Is stuff like that pretty common in Germany? Traditional Bavarian foods I mean.

Expats are fine from my experience, as long as they speak English. Huge plus if they know how to order stuff in German.
No on the Weißwurst part. Costums has proplems with mailing meat over borders n stuff.

You can buy Bavarian foods everywhere in Germany, but most Restaurants you can get this stuff in are in Bavaria and Baden-Würtemberg.

Yeah the we issues question was more of a joke. Germany is definitely on my list of places to visit. I really been meaning to learn German too. I gotta just sit down and start that

Good luck. I have tried learning German, French, Italian. I get pretty far and then usually just drop off somehow. If you can. good luck to you.

Also, visiting Germany is also on my list since i have some German blood in me :)

Is American cuisine exotic food there?

No, it´s called junk food :)
The only thing that is known in Germany as "American" cuisine is Mc Donalds / Burger King / Pizza Hut / KFC which I find very sad. There are some awesome stuff you can get in America (See steaks, smoked stuff, stews)

edith says: Sure, everybody is welcome here.

How would you describe German culture? More liberal/progressive or traditional/conservative? Are the needs of the many more important than the rights of the few or vice versa? Boxers or briefs?

That is a very difficult question to answer. First of all, there are still big differences between the west and the east in Germany. In the east a lot of people think that everything is happening too fast. So I would classify them as conservative. The west seems to be more progressive when it comes to technology, but they are also pretty conservative when it comes to stuff like immigrants and foreigner policies.
There is also a big shift between the younger generation and the older ones, but I guess it is like this everywhere.
Our government seems to be very liberal and progressive compared to most countries. I personally like it, but a lot of people find them too liberal and progressive which is giving the far right political groups more voters in the moment.
The needs of many are definitely over rights of few, with the exception of car manufacturers.
Boxers over briefs... I think...

Why do you believe the east/west divide is happening in those regions (as opposed to the west being more conservative). Any truth to this article?

The article you posted puts it very well.
You have to think that there have been 2 totally different ways of bringing up your child.
In the west, there was always the pressure on being better than your classmates and only the best people got really got jobs.
In the east everybody WILL get a job, no matter how bad or good they are. Usually this it predetermined by what is needed and not by the skill each individual person has.
This has stopped after the berlin wall got torn down, and that´s where this big difference is coming from.
