GW2 Black Lion Chests

Hey guys - new to GW2 and the forums. I'm up to I think level 15, and I've acquired a couple of the Black Lion Chests. How do you get keys to unlock these chests? Do they need to be purchased with gems? And gems can only be purchased with real money? If so, are these keys, or the items you find in these chests actually worth it?
 
You can also get keys from random drops, map completion, some story line rewards, and from opening the chest.

You can get some cool stuff from the chest, like a permanent black lion trading post and other goodies.

Sweet - sounds like they're worth it...I'm assuming finding the keys is pretty rare? It sounds like I should hold off on them and keep storing them in my bank.
 
To answer your other question gems can be bought with real money or in game gold through the trading post. Real money gives you a static rate, whereas the gold-to-gem currency exchange rate is always in flux.
In general the chests will give you a tonic to change your appearance for a period of time, a booster of some sort, and/or harvesting gear...rarely they will have really good permanent drops like mentioned above. I have found that the contents are not worth the cost of the keys in general and I only open them if/when I find keys. Other people may have had more luck than me with the chests though...

Thanks - I'll most likely hoarde them until I need the bank space and wait to find these illusive keys.
 
they stack to 250 so you will only need one bank or bag slot. You will get a handful of keys long before you need a 2nd slot for chests. I personally like them but never pay real money for keys. Only gold to gems or keys from drops/completions. I like the contents, but there is very little in them I would go out of my way to get or pay gold for.

Thanks for the reply!! It seems the general consensus is the contents are worth it, but not worth it enough to impatiently spend real money for gems. I will continue to stack them!
 
I actually got an eternal transformation potion that never expires and turns me in to trees! How useful is that?! LOL But it is pretty fun, no joke. I'm gonna start the ARX Arborists Association and when other people get them we will randomly go throughout the world spawning forests. Huzzah!

That's it? I've been in the full stack + category for over a month. I've used much gold to gems converting into keys for the perma items. Still have over a stack of chests and two bank tabs worth of items from the chests. Terrible.
 
Yeah, I've got a stack collecting dust as well. I'd like to see another option for getting keys, but oh well. Eventually something will change or these things will just become too useless/burdensome
 
Yeah I have almost 40 now and I thought that was a lot <.< Although to be fair I opened a whole bunch since the first couple weeks I played I kept getting keys all over the place.
 
There came a time that I just kept getting keys in from the Lions Chest, that was so nice, lol. But after that I have yet to get one from a chest xD

same thing! the first couple chests I opened in the head start all had keys. Now I see 1 key for every 8 chests I get or so (not counting completion rewards)

The Black Lion Chest is getting a spooky upgrade for Halloween. Between October 23 and November 5 each Black Lion Chest you open has a chance to give you one of six exclusive Halloween-themed weapon skins!
 
I'll probably never get rid of my black lions chests, even though they hardly give me anything I want or need xD but this makes me really excited to open them around Halloween! How do you go about looting keys, if you have completed all the maps?
 
sounds like the price just spiked to over 50c each from the news of new items coming out of them on the 23rd. I bet they will go down the next few days to the 30c ish mark then spike again on the 23rd when people start looting them.
