Books and more Books

I wanted to start this thread to add some non-game diversity to the forums and maybe grow the community a little more. And because well... even though my list of books to read is ridiculously long... I'm ALWAYS looking for more! Haha.

I also hope this thread will allow folks to socialize and possibly find others with similar tastes in books. And ultimately give people who read an even longer list of books to read. Because lets be honest, being an avid reader and having nothing to read next is a terrible thing.

So lets start off with what kind of books/genre you enjoy reading. Maybe a SHORT list of what books you enjoy the most. Maybe an Author or two. You get the idea!

I'll start...

I pretty much read Sci-fi/Fantasy exclusively. Sometimes I'll read a factual book... but not very often.

My current reading list looks as such:
Cornbread Mafia: A Homegrown syndicates Code of Silence (Book on the largest pot bust in American history)
Earth Unaware by Orson Scott Card
Monster Hunter Legion By Larry Correia (Audio book)
Some of my favorite books / Series:
The Dragonbone Chair - Tad Williams
Ender's Game series - Orson Scott Card
Night Angel Trilogy - Brent Weeks (A great Assassin Series)
Old Man's War - John Scalzi
The Warded Man - Peter Brent
Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss
The Thomas Covenant Chronicles - Stephen R. Donaldson (Only made it through the first trilogy so far)
The Rock Rats - Ben Bova
Ringworld - Larry Niven
The Mote in God's Eye - Larry Niven/ Jerry Pournelle
The Dresden Files Series - Jim Butcher
Annnd I should stop now...

Ender's Game is being made into a movie being shot in Louisiana. Had the pleasure of auditioning for it actually. Other than that I don't know much about it. Other than hearing how amazing it is. :)

I tend to read a lot of Star Wars books.

I, Jedi is one of my favorites.
As is The Thrawn trilogy. Thrawn is just...simply amazing as an antagonist. He felt far more of a threat than I think the Emperor did in the movies, and I LOVE the original movies.

I have been reading the saxon series by Bernard Cornwell. Its about the Danes , English and Saxons fighting over England. Very good series, I am on book 5 now. I used to read some star wars books but have not in many years.

I rwent to a book signing for Orson Scott Card last month! After hearing him answer some questions about the movie I'm pretty pumped about it honestly. Release date is November 2013. Annnnd they apparently brought Cirque De Solie acrobats in to train the actors in how to move while hanging as if they were in Zero G.

I haven't read many of the Star Wars books. I picked up a few of the small ones a long long time ago. BUT, the Rogue Squadron main author (Michael Stackpole) is a favorite of mine. I thought about reading his stuff to ease myself into the Star Wars books =P
But...I honestly have no idea where a good start to dive in would be.

Currently reading: Oryx and Crake by Atwood. And one day, one day, I will read through 5 consecutive pages of Existentialism is a Humanism by Sartre without having to stop.

I recommend all of these. I um... wrote this up a while ago to keep track of what I need to read and have read. The books are almost without exception fantasy and sci-fi. I also could not at the time of writing this find all of the series I'd read... there was htis one where this girl could shape shift and she helped a bunch of animals destroy an armies tents and what not.... some other stuff.. idk.. she was raised by wolves. Anyway.. All of those are good.

The ones in parentheses are the ones I need to read, unless otherwise stated in the parentheses. Things with a : after them are the names of the series.

EDIT: I'll add onto this as I remember more.

EDIT EDIT: I found that book after searching and tryed something else I just remembered from that book... that gave me a hit... called The Immortals Series

x3 EDIT: I also pretty much enjoy anything from the authors, David Eddings, David Gemmel, and Terry Brooks. Terry brooks is actually doing new books... He's doing the "Legends of Shanarra" Series.

Excerpt from one of the two books about "The Ragpicker." Full excerpt here. He did a reading of that excerpt. It's also on that page.

Ragpicker, ragpicker, what you gonna do.
When the hunters are hunting and they’re for hunting you.
Ragpicker, ragpicker, just stay low.
If you don’t draw attention they might let you go.
______________________________________________
Ragpicker, ragpicker, you’re all alone.
The hunters that are hunting want to pick your bones.
Ragpicker, ragpicker, just walk on.
If you wait them out they will soon be gone.

Bones of the dead left lying on the ground.
One more day and they will never be found.
Ragpicker, ragpicker, you never know
There are rags to be found wherever you go.

Markus,

check out the World War/Colonization series by Harry Turtledove. Great alternate history sci fi books, recently read the series for the second time. Couldnt put it down.

Omg. The Dark towers start out amazing.

Sadly I couldn't get into the later ones. I really want to finish it too. D:

And I highly recommend The Bartimaeus Trilogy. Those were great books.

I recommend a lot of those books, but I didnt want to list them all lol

Divergent is a good books that has a sci-fy feel to it that I read recently. But mostly I've been reading non-fiction books. I'm awesome like that.

YES to the Dark Towers books. :D

And I'm definitely a fan of Stackpole. I think of the books of his I've read, I, Jedi is one of his best. But I'd definitely (if you can) read all of rogue squadron first as it focuses on one of the pilots after he leaves the squadron.

:)

EDIT EDIT: I found that book after searching and tryed something else I just remembered from that book... that gave me a hit... called The Immortals Series

The Immortals Series by Tamora Pierce :D <3 I recommend all of her books. Most of them are a bit young adult/feminist, but they're all awesome!

Other books I'd recommend in the same vein:
  • Karen Miller's Empress/Godspeaker/Hammer of God (NOT kids books. Do have some sexual triggers, be warned. But oh so awesome)
  • Sabriel/Lirael/Abhorsen by Garth Nix
  • Definitely recommend Ender's Game/Speaker for the Dead/Xenocide/Children of the Mind and Ender's Shadow/Shadow of the Hegemon/Shadow Puppets/Shadow of the Giant by Orson Scott Card
  • I do recommend R.R. Martin's books (The Game of Thrones series), even though there are parts of it that I imagine him sitting there, steepling his fingers, and cackling with a raging hard-on.
Different sorts of books that I've read recently and enjoyed and can think of atm:
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  • Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
  • The Secrete Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

MoDSec - I know the feeling if making a list of your books haha. I actually recently joined a site called GoodReads.com. For the express purpose of keeping a list of what I want to read and hopefully stumbling across something new. I've read some of the books you listed, our basic tastes seem to be somewhat similar. If you have the time, I suggest the Memory, Sorrow, Thorn Trilogy. It starts with The Dragonbone Chair. Its a nice hefty read, but when you finish reading it, it feels "complete". The story starts, progresses, and then ends. One of my all time favorite books/trilogy haha.

And were the Guild Wars books any good?

Falx, I've heard of that series but never really picked it up. I do have his Into Darkness sitting on my shelf but I've never read it =/ Have you ever read 1632 or 1633 by Eric Flint? I know there a ton more in that series but I've personally only read the first two. Its a nice interesting alt. history series.

And this is directed at pretty much everyone else, if your a fan of more dark fantasy/horror. Karl Edward Wagner is superb. Mainly his Kane character fascinates me. Basically he took the idea of Cain from the bible, and made him more of a no nonsense Conan the barbarian who is immortal and wanders the world. Sadly, finding his books are a pain in the ass.

And also Sand Man Slim by Richard Kadrey. Freaking love this series.

Ran across a decent collection of free e-books today. I browsed it and have seen that it has something for everyone. Philip K. Dick, Neil Gaiman, Kant, Kipling, lots of the Public domain stuff listed. But free is free.

Also, for the college students, lots of philosophy books listed here that are required reading. Kant, Plato, Hume, etc, etc.

I am a sad panda that The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z by Max Brooks aren't up here. You people disappoint me...oh well more zombies to shoot. I was also into Star Wars books back in the day. I don't read much but I did have a bout lately at work where I was reading Clive Cussler books, mainly his Dirk Pitt novels. Dirk Pitt=Indiana Jones for the most part. I also used to read a TON of Tom Clancy when I was younger. My father read his stuff all the time and I was REALLY into the military.

My favorite Star Wars book has to be The Mandalorian Armor by JK Jeter http://books.google.com/books/about/The_Mandalorian_Armor.html?id=weLswGJdLfUC
I also had a ton of those books about Han and Leia's kids when I was younger.

Max Brooks! Can't wait for the World War Z movie.

I been meaning to steal Corvus' set of Game of Thrones books as I love the HBO series so far.

The Temeraire Series by Naomi Novik

I've only read His Majesty's Dragon and Throne of Jade but they are amazing. I'm a slow reader, my mind wanders, gets lost in the world often forcing me to re-read a bit once I get back from my tangent, but I can't wait to read more from her. ;)

The setting is basically like the 1700s nautical times, but with dragons (alternative history, Napoleonic Wars). Makes me want to go back and read some more, just thinking about it.

I love to read also. Right now I picked up The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy because I have not read it since high school, and may I also recommend The Sharing Knife series by Lois McMaster-Bujold. Good sci-fi/fantasy read. Thanks for sharing your list as well!

PS- Neil Gaiman is one of my all time fave authors. In fact my avatar on forum is one of his creations, Death of The Endless. If you like graphic novels or comic books, I highly recommend The Sandman series or Death: The High Cost of Living.

pps- I adore the library and when my butt is not parked in front of the PC at home or work, that is where you can find me. It is so peaceful there, in fact I am "there"now. :)

Just finished the most current Monster Hunter International Books. Awesome series.
Lots of guns, explosions, smartass humor, and also... Monsters.

I recommend it to anyone who enjoys modern fantasy settings. Someone with a knowledge of firearms would enjoy this book even more than just your typical Joe Blow. I know basic makes and models... but when they go into super fine details or talk about a foreign rifle, I got a little lost.

Just started Good Omens by Neil Gaiman, and Terry Pratchett... Seems interesting so far.

The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time.

Only reading it because it's for school, but I'm liking it :3

I love this thread lol. I tend to read a lot, like all the time :)
I used to read a lot of StarWars books when I was younger. The Thrawn Series was definitely one of the best and most well written i found, and agree that he seemed more of a threat than the Emperor ever was.
In terms of the Ender series i read the first one and loved it, finding the second harder to get into but will give it another shot at some point.

Series I think people should definitely at least give a shot are
Game of Thrones (duh)
The Abhorsen Chonicles by Garth Nix
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
Wind On Fire by William Nicholson
Soldier of the Legion by Marshall S. Thomas
The Price of Freedom by Chris Northern
Novels of the Change by S. M. Stirling
The Saga of Darren Shan by Darren Shan

oh and so many more,
