What's new

Books and more Books

How have I missed this thread until now?!?!

I'm always looking for new books to read. My all time favorite author is Walter Moers. I recommend all of his works, especially any that take place in Zamonia. My favorites of his are:

The 13 and 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear
Rumo and his Miraculous Adventures
The City of Dreaming Books
The Alchemaster's Apprentice

He's a German author, so I usually have to wait for the translations. Looking forward to one coming out on November 8th called The Labyrinth of Sleeping Books. Other than that, I've been reading a lot of classics lately on account that I want to have a better background for my AP Literature Class. We're reading Macbeth and Brave New World right now, both of which I'm enjoying. On my own, I've read Don Quixote, Gone With the Wind, etc. As for my guilty pleasures, I'd have to say the best are the Halo Novels.

/thread.

Haha! Nice.

In terms of the Ender series i read the first one and loved it, finding the second harder to get into but will give it another shot at some point.

The Ender series is one of my all time favorites... and I know EXACTLY how your feeling about the books following Ender's game.
It's a common feeling among fans of the author. Card has actually talked about this phenomenon before. He has stated that he wrote it differently with a much different tone. The story no longer follows "children" AND it's so far in the future its almost a stand alone trilogy.

He has also stated that this is one of the reasons he went back and wrote the series that revolves around Bean. It starts with Ender's Shadow, and directly parallels the events of Ender's Game. You get Beans back story and so forth. Then it continues on (another 3-4 books) following Bean and many other Battle School grads back on Earth.

My suggestion, if your stagnant on the second book (Speaker for the Dead), skip forward to Ender's Shadow then head back to Speaker for the Dead when you are ready to tackle it. There aren't any spoilers, no missing parts, AND it still makes sense in a chronological mind set too.

There are also some pretty nicely done graphic novels =P

and I was REALLY into the military.

Zakis there are some really nice Sci-Fi military out there series/books out there. I've heard the Honor Harrington stuff by David Weber is good. It's more Navy-ish because its set in space. My brother fully enjoys these.
I personally like John Ringo's stuff. His Posleen series that starts with A Hymn Before Battle was and is excellent!

Hmm, definitely stuff to check out then. I am a sucker for stuff like that too, Battlestar Galactica, etc.

Just started Good Omens by Neil Gaiman, and Terry Pratchett... Seems interesting so far.

A good read that I definitely enjoyed. Hope you do too. Did you ever read "A Dirty Job" by Christopher Moore? You may like that too... he has several very comical reads. I liked Fluke and Lamb as well. If you like action and fast reads, any book by Greg Rucka is awesome. Start with A Fistful of Rain.

Just finished reading Brave New World. Really enjoyed it and can't wait to officially read it again in my Lit class.

Totally been slacking, I meant to post on here several times and I've gotten side tracked.

I finished Good Omens and thought it was Quirky and fun. And I'll have to look into Christopher Moore's stuff. I see several of his books when I go browsing I just never took the dive and picked it up to read.

I've started rereading (and hopefully getting all the way through) the "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" series. A great anti-hero series. The guy is a leper and is basically torn between believing he has entered a magical world or if its all fake.

Alsooooo

The Humble Bundle team has released an E-Book bundle with several authors. I probably wont be buying this because I already have a crap ton of e-books. Just wanted to spread the word. DRM free things are always nice.
