GW2 Combo Finishers

As I look at the warrior more (really starting to lean that way for a main, especially since I now know they can use a long bow), I'm a little hazy on how combo finishers work for the various classes. I understand projectiles, that's pretty simple: you fire something through a combo field, it gets augmented (or has a % chance to if it's a skill like Vital Shot).

Now, my question comes with stuff like Savage Leap and Shield Bash ... According to this chart, is that saying that if I Savage Leap or Shield Bash through a Flamewall (for example), I'll gain Fire Armor, since they're both "leap" type combo finishers going through a Fire type combo field?

I would assume so, both of those travel a distance so you could go thru a fire wall. however that shield bash distance is pretty short.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well, that's a really short range. Most abilities you can use even though the person is in range, so theoretically you Shield Bash across any combo field, but with only a 3sec duration on something like Fire Armor, it's of limited usage. I guess we'll see how it plays out.

This is precisely how the combo fields work. If a skill is a Combo Finisher, it will state as such in its tooltip, as well as what kind of Finisher it is. For example, Cyclone Axe has the following listing: 'Combo Finisher: Whirl'. Mean that it will trigger a bonus effect off a combo field, and that the finisher will be of the Whirl type. Below is a quick video explaining it.

For combo fields, look more at the guardian symbols and the elementalist staff fields. They are both decent sized radii and the ele fields can be targetted.
Say you are in a fight with a boss mob and the ele drops healing rain on top of you. The radius for healing rain is a couple dozen feet. While you are inside the field, that lasts I think 9 seconds, any combo finisher will cause heals. If you finish a leap technique into the field anyone near the stopping point will be healed. If you do a blast or whirl technique, anyone near you gets healed. If you shoot projectiles into the field, anyone near your target you hit will be healed.

The buffs like fire armor are for if you get hit during the buff its extra damage. I think the combos are great but not overpowering to the point of failing if you don't use them.
