Hey! I browsed around this forum and didn't see a Doctor Who thread so I thought I'd make one! If there already is one you can delete this thread, I'm not sure how it works here haha.

I'm curious, who was everyone's first Doctor? What do you think of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth?

Feel free to open with questions!

I started watching during the first season of the reboot, so Eccleston. He's the only Doctor I've ever really liked. I have watched quite a bit of the older episodes and while some of them are good they are just too dated for my tastes. I will say that I do not like the 11th Doctor at all, and while Tennant was fantastic I thought 10 was too whiney/emotional at times. Number 9 will forever be MY Doctor.

I don't like Capaldi as the next choice for Doctor since he's already been in the show, and recently at that. I was hoping for a female doctor this time around, but meh, I haven't been keeping up with 11 anyway, so I probably won't tune into 12.

Edit: I know Christopher Heyerdahl isn't British but I think he would have made a fantastic 12th Doctor. He would have been a great change from all the happy-go-lucky Doctors of this reboot.

Full disclosure, never seen an episode of Doctor Who. I feel like I am not a full geek until I do. Should I just wait for the newest season to start and start from there seeing as how they are just changing doctors anyway or should I go back to the start of the 11th doctor or some other doctor? I'm not sure if I'll even be able to find the episodes, but I am looking for a good starting point.

I've tried to get into Dr. Who. Caroline will vouch for me on this one. She loves it, I just can't get into it. It's not my thing I guess? /shrug

I agree with Sweetloaf here, i loved the series when Christopher Eccleston was the doctor. Then David Tennant came in and it just got a little weird for me.

that's odd cause Christopher Eccleston is clearly the worst doctor of the 3 *ponydurr: anyway, does anyone know if they are finishing out the next season with Matt smith and then swapping over or is he stepping in first episode?

Matt Smith will regenerate in the upcoming Christmas Special in December.

Start from 9! They have all of the 9th and 10th Doctors on Netflix and most of the 11th!

I have to agree with you on Eccleston being my favourite and first Doctor and how I feel about Classic Who. I really enjoyed The Three Doctors special with 1, 2, and 3 and also a ton of the 4th Doctor's episodes and a few of the 7th's. Matt Smith is really.. hit and miss for me. Some of this episodes I thought were absolutely fantastic. Others? Not so much. Smith's first two seasons were kind of shaky at best in my opinion, and he didn't have the best writing (insert humongous bias against Moffat here) but I thought he tackled the humongous role fairly well. As far as Capaldi already being in the show, might I remind you that the actor who played the 6th Doctor arrested the 5th Doctor in an episode, the actress who played Martha in the new series was in the series finale of the series before her own, and the actress who played Amy was in the same episode as Capaldi (albeit not as major of a role). I don't know, just give the new guy a chance. :D
As far as 12 being a woman goes, I'll just say I see the Doctor as more of a paternal figure so I'm not so much for him regenerating into a woman haha. I mean, what if Susan catches up with him? ".. Grand.. mother..?" :p

I love this show. Just finished up episode 12 of the 7th series last night. I've been hooked for a long time.

Ah yes, I didn't notice Amy in that episode. Must be all that make-up! As for Martha.. I never particularly enjoyed her stint on the show. I guess I'm more worried about Capaldi as I've seen him in a lot more stuff, and he's a bit more recognizable. I am glad they went older, though. I'll give it a shot, but do I need to catch up on 11? Last I recall he was meeting up with that
Dalek who thought she was human.

My qualms with Eleven lie in the fact that it turned into a crappy hipster love fest with too little sci-fi. It was alright, but I like when they travel through time and space, not just time.

tell me about it. after the episode was over and I say nothing new till Nov 23rd I was like......FUCK!!!!!! what am I going to watch until then.

Torchwood and Sarah Jane adventures! And if you haven't watched any Classic Who I'd suggest it. It's old so it has the whole old television vibe going on but it's still good!

Yeah, I completely understand and agree. That's why I'm very very happy they went older. Fangirls will stop oogling over the Doctor and pairing him with people.
And if you watch, you'll figure out why she's like that. It's all part of the overarching story of Clara. Oh, and I agree with your viewpoint on Martha. She's my least favourite major companion (my least favourite out of major and minor was Adam in Eccleston's run. That kid was just.. dumb.

Totally agree. My favorite companion, though not really one I guess, was Mickey. I thought his relationship with the Doctor was hilarious, though quite a bit sadder than most. I always hope to see Mickey come back. Rory was a good replacement for the Mickey-role in these past seasons but just not the same. Oh, I also loathe River Song with a deep and unparalleled passion. I like my Doctor lonely and miserable.

I'd consider him a main companion, and I enjoy his exchanges with Nine and Jack haha. I think Rory is my favourite male companion though. He's smart (understood that the TARDIS was in its own dimension, was a nurse, etc) and gets made fun of but he has a good attitude about it. As far as River Song goes, I love her storyline and I like Alex Kingston as an actress. Some of her script is cheesy though, so I'm back and forth with her. I agree with lonely and miserable Doctor though.
I also automatically have a bias towards anyone who dies multiple times so.. Rory. Yeah. Haha.

As far as his regeneration limit goes, Neil Gaiman said this (which I think is brilliant):
In response on his Tumblr, Gaiman said: “Well, that was the rule when we had Time Lords running the show. (And they were the ones who gave the Master his extra regenerations.) There aren’t any Time Lords any more… MY OPINION (which is not Canon) is that the regeneration limit is a lot like the speed limit. You can break it, but things get a lot more dangerous if you do. The Time Lords were the traffic cops: they enforced the limit. With them gone, the Doctor can keep regenerating beyond 13, but with consequences.

I personally think this is a great idea and I loved both of Neil Gaiman's episodes (The Doctor's Wife, Nightmare in Silver).

I hope the Doctor regenerates into an Ood for at least one episode after 12, lol.
