What's new

Firefly Fans... I'm a little skeptical.

There was a site up for this a while back, I signed up when they were looking for interest in the game in general. I hadn't heard anything about it until now. Guess they been floundering without money. They touted it as doing Firefly the right way, being pretty open ended, and having an emphasis on RP with your own backstory n such.

I'm all for people enjoying open ended games, but I like having direction. I mean, I could see this being a great concept, and then failing miserably. In fact, I'd put money on it failing miserably.

Yeah. Being a diehard Firefly fan I kinda want to see this turn out well, but honestly I would trust it more in the hands of someone like CCP. They KNOW how to make a sandbox game. As much as I have a love/hate relationship with EVE, that game is amazing.

A mere 200k budget for an MMO - where $10 gets you a lifetime subscription? This sounds too good to be true - I'd stay well clear until reputable sites give this some attention.

On the other hand, if they had a budget of 20 million dollars and the option to pay $150 for a lifetime subscription, the game could flop just as well. Like you, I always wait for reviews, gameplay footage and (other people's) beta experiences before I make up my mind - that's really the only way to be sure if a game is worth your money or not.

That said, I'm not too hopeful that this game will do well. As much as I like Firefly, if you remove the Serenity and its crew from the Firefly setting, does it provide enough background and depth for an MMO? Will it still feel like Firefly, rather than some easily replaceable, relatively generic science-fiction setting?

Yeah, dunno about that, but I did kill an hour or so looking at some other the other projects on that site. Fun stuff. Also doomed. But fun.

I think it would, but they would have to include the Serenity crew as characters to some level and maintain that humor. The Sci-Fi Western MMO is an awesome idea though

There's a Firefly pen-and-paper RPG that I played for a couple of weeks. There's enough there with some creativity.

But given the lack of experience of the DarkCryo staff, even if this project ever actually produces a playable product, they have no server specialists, QA staff etc. Assuming this isn't a scam, how can they possibly produce an MMO, of all things?

Oh no I completely agree Dire. I wish they had taken on something else first as a learning project. I am not holding my breath with this. And now I Kinda want to resub to EVE...DAMNIT.

Ouch... that doesn't sound good at all...

(By the way, are you a P&P role player?)

(Am I a pen an paper RPG player, he asks DIREmongoose, a clear D&D reference)
Yes. I have an online game every Tuesday where we play/run Mage or Eclipse Phase. I also play Vampire/Changeling/Mage once a month, and play Eclipse Phase on occasional Sundays. Each of the three groups are with different people.

So yeah, you could say I play them :)

At Uni I'd play/run 4 different games a week. Now a mere 1-2. Getting a life is hard sometimes, but I've put it off as long as possible!
