GW2 Gathering Tools

Alright, I wanted to go into detail about gathering. Everyone knows that crafting is a part of every MMO, no matter how big or how small. A lot of people couldn't give a shit about crafting, and I really can't blame them! It can be tedious, costly, and time consuming. Most of the time, the effort put in doesn't even come close to the benefit that comes out of it. But alas, if you don't like crafting, you don't have to do it! That's where I (and many other craft enthusiasts) come in. All crafters have one thing on common though, we all depend on supplies. This is where everyone comes in!

Everyone should, at all times, keep gathering tools equipped and gather every supply possible. Now, some of you may be like "FFFFFUUUUU MY BAG SPACE BRRRAAAAGHGHGH", but huzzah! Every item that can be gathered can also be deposited in a special "collection" tab. Not only does it not require any long lasting space (or damper on your limited inventory slots), but you can also deposit them from anywhere! Just gather everything, right click the icons, and "Deposit into Collection"! Presto! More bag space!

"BUT THAT'S TIME OUT OF MY PLAYING BRAAAGHGHG"
Yes, it takes about 5-10 seconds to gather an item every time you find one node.....Yeah, that's really not a lot of time. But, I have a few reasons why you might want to go through the trouble.
1. You gain experience upon gathering.
2. Income. You can use these materials for coin.
3. Socket Items. Chance of gaining gems for small stat increases in your gear!
4. Supporting the guild. Crafters need supplies and can always use help.
5. Gear. By helping our Crafters you will have access to more crafted gear. Depending on your contributions, you may get some free gear out of it!
6. Respect. You'll always have mine.

Now, hopefully some of you will be thinking "Hmm, income. HOW MUCH?!?!" Well, that all depends on the market. You could always sell these items on the Auction House, and that'll gain you some income. You could also donate to the guild bank, thus helping us out help you! It's all up to you, I approve of both options. You really can do whatever you want! EXCEPT VENDOR THESE ITEMS. The vendor value is practically nothing and not worth it. We won't force you to do anything you don't want to, but ignoring these gathering abilities will be detrimental to your game play! If you don't want to sell on the AH, you can always just donate to the guild. It's always appreciated!

Alright, not it's time to explain the actual art of Gathering. You can equip all three tools (Sickle, Axe, Pick) that are required to gather at all times. These tools all do have different grades and different times it can be used. I'll go into specifics of each one.

Sickle : Ability to gather herbs/plants from the earth. Food items primarily, used in cooking (Stated by Anet to be the most demanding profession).
Axe : Gather wood from trees that sprout in the wilderness. Used for Artificer, Huntsman, and Weapon Smith.
Pick : Gather Ore and Gems from deposits. Usable for Armorsmith, Artificer, Huntsman, Jeweler, and Weapon Smith.

Hmm, Artificer, Huntsman, and Weapon Smith use similar materials. DING DING! More demand will create a smaller supply! Hence my post. Supplies will be needed!

Now, let me go into the grades of tools. "WHAT?! I HAVE TO CARE ABOUT THE TOOLS YOU SAID ARE BLAHBLAHBLAH!!!" Ha, yeah. There are different grades of tools. For each level zone you are in, the gather-able materials are increased in quality. If you use a tool that is too low for the zone, you lose the effectiveness and may end up with junk. Bad Junk. Waste. BOOOO! So, yeah, let me explain the grades of tools.

SICKLES
Rough (50 uses) : Starter zones
Iron (50) : Up to Level 30 Zones
Steel (50) : Up to Level 45 Zones
Gold (50) : Up to Level 60 Zones
Platinum (50) : Up to Level 80 Zones
Mystic (10) : Extremely Efficient at gathering resources and finding rare materials. ONLY FOUND IN MYSTIC CHESTS.

AXES
Rough (100) : Starter Zones
Iron (100) : Harvest Soft and Green Woods
Steel (100) : Harvest Seasoned, Soft and Green Woods
Gold (100) : Harvest Elder, Hard, and all Lesser Woods
Platinum (100) : Harvest Ancient, Elder, and all Lesser Woods
Mystic (25) : Extremely Efficient at gathering resources and finding rare materials. ONLY FOUND IN MYSTIC CHESTS.

PICKS
Rough (100) : Harvest Copper Nodes
Iron (100) : Harvest Iron, Silver, and Copper Nodes
Steel (100) : Harvest Iron, Gold, Silver, and Copper Nodes
Gold (100) : Harvest Platinum, Mithril, and all Lesser Nodes
Platinum (100) : Harvest Orichalcum, Mithril, and all Lesser Nodes
Mystic (25) : Extremely Efficient at gathering resources and finding rare materials. ONLY FOUND IN MYSTIC CHESTS.

So, by looking at the lists here, you can get a rough idea of what level of tool you should carry when. Now, every tool is reverse compatible, so you can use a Gold Sickle in an Iron area, but that wouldn't be effective. If you know you are going to be in a certain level zone, I would suggest using a separate set of tools that fit the zone. Now, yes, this is the part where bank / inventory space might get a little bit limited. I'm not saying keep a bajillion tools in your bank, but have a varied set so you can be efficient. Or have a just two sets, like Steel and Platinum, and just swap between the two. Either way, there is no need to pass over a node because "ZOMG I DON'T HAVE A TOOL". That will make me very sad. Not just for me, but for you, because that also means you're missing out on experience and gold.

This pretty much ends my spiel.

TL;DR : ALWAYS KEEP TOOLS ON HAND. GATHER EVERYTHING YOU SEE. IT IS FREE MONEY, EXPERIENCE, AND GEAR. SUPPORT THE GUILD WITH DONATIONS. IT TAKES LITTLE TIME AND LITTLE EFFORT AND WILL ALWAYS BE APPRECIATED.

Addition if you harvest shit you have a chance to get upgrades for your gear.

Write-ups and flowcharts are really the only productive things I can do outside of game. I can read and read and read all I want, but putting all of the information I know into (relatively) easy formats for quick reads in one place? It's just handy to have.

Plus it eats time.

Great write up! Now there is one thing since you said muliple tool sets, can you stack a few of the same tools? Like three Rough Axes in one pile or does it take three slots?

One slot for each tool. But you can always keep multiple sets in your bags. I know I'll keep a back up set for each and plenty of SALVAGE KITS.

If you know them, would you mind adding locations as to where one can quickly obtain these tools? I'd love to be able to quickly run over and grab them right when I start so I don't have to worry about them later on and can start harvesting from the start. Obviously I don't expect you to have it all memorized, but anything you can provide would help. :)

There are general merchants all over the world. The most common items to find will actually be these tools and salvage kits. In every home city, and almost every sub town or merchant area will have these on at least one vendor. I know in my head where I can go in the Charr zone specifically (since I was a Charr), but it shouldn't be too hard to find these after 5-10 minutes of searching in a major city.

Yeah they are everywhere. Pretty much every sort of outpost or town you might stumble upon has a general goods vendor with these tools and salvage kits.

I really hope more people have this mindset. Like, I want it to be a guild requirement. Even if you don't craft you can gather for the guild (and gain experience bonuses and gear enhancements).

It may be worthwhile to designate who will be crafting what/who to feed materials to.
Personally I have like zero interest in actually doing the crafting, I'd much rather just gather and ship it off to be used by a crafter who could then give me either some random gear they made or buy them from me at a discounted rate.

<----- Will be doing all eight. That's kind of my job :p But I will be specifically starting with Jeweling and Cooking as they are the most difficult, then on an alt I will have Leather and Huntsman on my Engy, Artificer and Tailoring on my Elementalist, and Weapon/Armor on my solider character (haven't decided of Guardian or Warrior yet).

Since there is no level restriction or limits on crafting I will be using 4 characters for the 8 Crafts. There is simply no reason not to, other than if you are planning on deleting a character...

Ugh. My eyes hurt from reading so much GW2 stuff today already. It takes time and effort to plan my postings. /eyes bleed....

I'll get right on that....

I'm probably just going to drop some gems on inventory and bank space as soon as I get onto release anyways. :D I will definitely be gathering everything I see. Do you have to travel somewhere specific to put materials in the guild bank or is it like mail? Can I just mail Gyoin food stuff? :D
