I unlocked the Arena area. That's the playmode where you pick a deck hero and then assemble the deck from random cards. It's not 100% random since they give you 3 cards to choose from each time, so you can pay attention to synergy and mana balance and so forth. You play with the deck until you lose 3 times, and then you get rewarded based on your number of wins. I won 2 duels, so I got 60 gold, 45 arcane dust (crafting material), and a pack of cards (worth 100 gold).

The first time you play the arena is free. After that, it costs 150 gold or $1.99. Gold is earned by completing quests. So far, I have not earned gold by winning duels, nor can cards be sold for gold.

Gyah, Blizz is doing pretty well with a F2P model as far as I'm seeing. Every corner, something to buy.

Even ignoring the 4 packs that I bought, progression is good in the early game. I unlocked all the basic cards in the Mage deck on the first night and unlocked all the heroes last night.

I like how you can always select a basic deck to play with even after you make custom decks, and they don't take up deck slots. That way if you are playing with friends, you can choose basic decks and be on equal footing with skill and luck being the decider.

Raptr are doing a livestream in which they'll be doing some Hearthstone giveaways. But I will be asleep during the time of broadcast, I think. Or at work.

So if someone could score one for me and PM it, I would be exceptionally grateful. There might be a copy of Torchlight 2 in it for someone.

When is this?

I think they need to increase gold acquisition in the game.

Currently, there's a daily quest to win 2 duels in Play Mode (vs live person) to get 40 gold. Also, every 5 games you win in Play mode with any combination of decks nets you 5 gold.

One pack of cards costs 100 gold, so unless you grind a TON of games, you're looking at one new pack every 3 days or so. The Arena costs 150 to enter, and if you are any good at strategy and deck building, it seems to be a better value for the gold. For just 1 win, you are guaranteed a card pack and some gold and arcane dust. At 3 wins the rewards become more efficient for the gold spent and a 50% win rate is not too high an expectation with the random deck.

Here's what you do.

1. Build invincible deck
2. Win all the games
3. ??????
4. Profit

I dunno what you'd call profit, but 5 gold every 5 wins. That means 1 pack of cards is 20 wins with a duel lasting about 10 minutes or so. Right now, hardcore grinding just doesn't make sense.

That pace sounds about right for a FTP game honestly. Theyre encouraging you to save time by spending money. This is what every successful FTP game does, especially league of legends.

Maybe to start it will be OK since the card set is still relatively small, but as more cards are released the pace could be more frustrating.

The pace can't be too slow. You want to let the people at least have the hope of not paying real money. Otherwise those who you are trying to sucker in with the "free" carrot will just give up. Then you only have those who were always willing to pay and you may as well have made it a pay to play game.

Also Elitist Jerks has a hearthstone forum.

BTW the math is almost always better to use your 150 gold to play arena instead of buy a pack for 100. The extra stuff you get from winning even a few rounds will help offset the costs and fill out your deck by crafting cards you don't have. Here is the EJ math on it. http://elitistjerks.com/f107/t133057-dust_dust_economy_thread/

Also Wowhead has the cards in its DB in case you want to research

I'm starting to realize that by getting 10 wins a day, you can buy a pack every other day, or play Arena about once every 3 days. That's not an unreasonable pace.

If you can manage to get 7 wins in arena you pay for that arena. 7 wins = 150g plus pack plus extra (gold or dust). 8 or 9 wins goes up from there.

Once you purchase your arena pass, is it good until you lose? So you can keep playing arena matches? How does that work?

Yes, you play until you lose 3 times. You can leave and play regular or practice matches if you want. It just saves the deck and whatever your win/lose record is.
