How the Mals are losing weight

I didn't want to derail the food thread, so I figured I'd just start a new post.

Do you also work out? I did a quick perusal of the blog and saw some before and afters. Curious if this is just diet or exercise and diet and to what extent?

Those after photos are older.. I'm now only 10lbs away from my goal weight, and Doug is only 25 or so. We actually quit counting calories for the summer.. decided to enjoy sitting on patios with margaritas , beer, wine etc :p We haven't gained back any weight, as following primal keeps us in check, but we haven't lost any since May or so due to the intentional summer slack off. We'll be getting back at it full time in mid-October or so.

When we started we did no exercise at all, as for Keto, due to the massive carb drop, it's easier to get started if you are not trying to work out too much until you get used to it. Maldwyn/Doug struggled with his weight for years.. I was one of those people who could eat anything I wanted and stay super thin. When I hit 40, that ended and I gained all my weight in like 8 months >.< As you saw, he lost the most, so I'm using him as the example, as our main goal was for him not to die of a heart attack and to get his blood pressure under control. So we created our eating plans around his loss, while mine was slower. He'd write this up.. but he's in the middle of deploying a new intranet at his office, working nutty long hours, and simply won't have much forum time until after our move.

So we started with 4 months of calorie counting where he lost 20 pounds. But he was miserable and hungry all the time. I then found Keto. We discovered he has a gluten allergy. He had what we thought were seasonal allergies his whole life - miserable every fall and spring.. turns out, it was diet exacerbating it, and now he hasn't taken so much as an allergy pill in 2 years, after being on prescription allergy meds his whole life. On strict Keto with no calorie counting, he lost another 60 pounds in 3 months (size 44 pants to a 38), while feeling full and eating things like bacon, butter and cream. That's when we started lifting.

We lift 3x a week, no cardio besides walking the dog, to work and the grocery store. When we move to Portland we're adding yoga, as for both of us, we've discovered our flexibility is holding us back with our lifting progess more than our strength. As long as I get re-started in mid-October as planned, I expect to be at my goal weight by Thanksgiving or so. I was always scared of living heavy, thinking I'd get all bulky.. which is far, far, far from the case - lifting heavy weights is the greatest way to get off fat and maintain weight and has awesome results for women. During my last push at weight loss, I'll be sticking to low weights, high reps (probably about 60 max on squats and 110 or so on deadlifts) with accessory work, because I have to calorie count a bit - at 5'6" I'll be on a round 1700-1800 kcals a day. Then I'll be switching to Starting Strength and go up to more like 2400-2500 kcals a day. I really shouldn't need to count anymore at that point, but I will for a couple weeks as I tend not to eat enough to raise my lifts if I don't. When I started lifting, I couldn't even lift the bar (45lbs), I had to start with body-squats and work my way up using practice bars over a couple months. My goal by the end of winter is to squat my body weight, deadlift 1½ times that, and to do 1-2 chin-ups (my arms are my waekest point atm).

Anyway, I'm sure this was TMI, but frankly, I wish someone had pointed out to us we didn't need to do 90 minutes of cardio a day to lose weight before we let it get out of control. If I'd started lifting earlier.. I could be eating everything in sight without all of this cutting business :p

The most under valued truth in the entire world of exercise.

Any ideas on how to get around the mind barrier?

Wake up, stop thinking about it, and do it.

I recommend a DVD workout of your choice. Wake up, get dressed, hit play.

Do what you can, stop trying to over think it. The minute you do, the minute you don't.

If you mean for diet, Keto was the big game changer for us. German food is great for that - saurkraut, sausages, etc. - yum! We cut out carbs (here's an example list of Keto foods), so it was actually pretty easy. It never felt like a diet, and once we switched to Primal, it just became a lifestyle change. Even when we go pig out these days, it's stuff like beer and Mexican food with corn tortillas.. not pasta and bread. We go out to eat a lot and have steak and veggies with wine - which is not at all a cheat. The only things we really ate a lot of that we gave up were pasta, bread and potatoes. Squash makes a great pasta substitute (this is one of the best kitchen tools I bought), cauliflower and radishes for potato. We really didn't give up much at all. Fat keeps you feeling full, so lots of butter, bacon, avocado, olive oil for that. Once I got used to cooking a new way, we ate great all the time.

The exercise motivation came on it's own after the weight loss - we started feeling so much better and had so much energy, that we got excited about the weightlifting. There's still no way I'd be a cardio rat, so if I hadn't discovered how much I like lifting, I'd probably have stayed with getting thin. While I still have some weight to lose, with the muscle I've gained, I look better now than I did in my 20s. We got really involved on Fitocracy, MyFitnessPal, r/Keto, r/ketogains, r/paleo, r/weightroom which helped as there's a lot of motivators there. r/ProgreessPics is always a good one too.

Weightloss is not a 'on-size-fits-all' and not everything works for everyone. I actually do better with a few more carbs than Doug does, so Primal/Paleo is working better for me now that we've switched. The nice thing is, that once we get this last bit of weight off, we've been maintaining without calorie counting no problem, so it's not like that part is endless.. and of course, we didn't do it at all for the bulk of the loss. It just gets a bit tougher to lose when you get close to goal weight.

But the biggest catalyst for us was that Doug's dad died of a heart attack at a young age, and we've both been to the doctor and have gotten a clean bill of health on cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. It's nice to know that we've extended our time to have years of healthy travel and if we keep doing squats, hopefully we'll never have trouble getting out of our chairs when we're in the nursing home playing virtual reality games :D

P90X is definitely a good place to start for people who don't know much about nutrition and exercising. You'll be working out 6 days a week, weight training with various muscle groups and cardio, it comes with a decent size cook book and nutrition plan and all the routines are on DVD. Of course you have to put up with Tony Horton's cheese ball antics during the videos, but its not too bad. I prefer to workout at home, I hate gyms. All I use are a pair of adjustable dumbbells and a pushup/pullup bar.

Iv also got pretty strict into the Paleo diet recently. It wasn't too much of a change from the diet I had before, but definitely healthier.

Heh.. I switched to a gym, as in a condo, I have no where to put a full size weight set, which is what I realized worked best for me - but did P90x for awhile, and I always liked Tony Horton, never understood why he bugs people so much. He makes me laugh. I still use him for Yoga if I can't make it to the gym for that.

That's why the adjustable dumbbells work so well for me. I use these and they have a heavier model available for those that want it.

  • These were my best investment of the last 3 years.
Smaller than the above for an apartment, and much less horizontal space when doing different motions. Makes it easier to get more range of motion. Just my two cents. They are called PowerBlocks.

They make vegi-pasta. Butternut squash is pretty good. Some "vegi-pastas" aren't legit though, the first ingredient is wheat.

Dammit, why does anything bad has to happen first. A lot of people around me just started with losing weight. One guy has problems with his eyes because of high blood pressure. The other one has problems with their ankles.
But I have no problems. On one side this is good, but on the other side, this means I have no motivation :/

Isn´t 5 kg a little bit heavy for a beginner?

Trust me, there are always problems even if you don't see it. I'm a nurse, I know what I'm talking about. I'm not overweight but I have been lax on exercise for a while and I'm sure it's affected my health in ways. Sometimes you don't even realize it was affecting you until you finally do get in shape and suddenly notice immense improvements in your life and well being.

I was working in aging science before, so I pretty much know what will happen.
But I guess I look at it like a lot of smokers look at smoking, almost everyone gets lung cancer, but I will be the one who does not get it!

I always always suggest those struggling with motivation to invest in a personal trainer. You pay someone a lot of money, in the long run it is not a lot, but at first it feels crazy. Then you feel obligated to show up and they take away the fear because they tell you what to do and when. Monetary investment plus no forethought = good combo for results.

We struggled mentally with that too at first, as we ate pasta at least 3 times a week. We realized what is the best about pasta is the sauces. I do alfredos, scampis, lasagna, etc.. just with with squash or sweet potato. Really, after thinking it would be the hardest to give up for the both of us, it's surprisingly turned out to be the one thing we never choose on a cheat day. The interesting thing, is once you give up a lot of the carby/sugary stuff - when you do cheat on it, you feel so crappy afterwards, it becomes much less appealing. It's important to find something that works for you, but experimenting led us to some surprises on what we really enjoy about food.
