What's new

Post your rig

Intel i5 -2500k 3.30GHz
16GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti

I plan on getting 1 more GTX 560 Ti SLY for the win!

First post from the new rig.. i did end up going with the asrock extreme6/gb over the sabertooth, becuase of the absurdly high failure rate on the sabertooth x79 boards..

stable easy oc at 4.6, going to try some more later.

I'm actually planning on building a new rig in a couple of weeks (just in time for Guild Wars 2). My goal is to build the computer and get new peripherals (mic, keyboard, and mouse) for under $2000. This is what I have picked out right now (which is subject to change based on pricing and availability on the websites I'm buying on).

The Rig:
Case: NZXT Phantom (Full Tower, black with green trim)
CPU: Intel i7 3770k (3.4 gHz, probably gunna OC to 4.4 if I can)
MoBo: ASUS Z77 Sabertooth
RAM: 16GB GSkill Sniper Series (2133 Speed)
GPU: EVGA GTX 670 FTW
Storage: 120GB OCZ SSD and 1TB Western Digital HDD
Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
PSU: Xion 850W Fully Modular
Disc drive: Sony DVDRW Disc Drive
OS: Windiows 7 Home Premium (OEM)

The Extras:
Monitor (already purchased): ASUS VE247H
Mouse: CM Storm Sentinel Advance II
Keyboard: Logitech G110
Headset: Creative Labs Fatal1ty

I'd love some feedback on what I have picked out so far.

^ you cant go wrong with that setup, except that z77 isnt as future proof as the new x79. But for the money, you will dominate high end games for several years. With the ivy bridge you will be able to use virtumvp for really nice framerates. If anything, spend a few more bucks and get a bigger SSD, 120gb goes REAL quick!

Thanks for the suggestion. I really only plan on using the SSD for my OS and games that I play all the time. The Hard Drive will be for everything else. Although, with the prices of SSDs dropping recently, I'll probably be able to buy another if need be.

Copykats present to me... he actually wrote the below in the email ... "You are so spoiled"
How mean!

My PC definitely could be better, but it was built in a hurry spec for spec for Guild Wars 2. Runs it on highest difficulty no issue (runs all games on highest without issue for that matter haha ^_^

Well we're less then 2 months away JOY! I'd like to see if my old girl gonna be able to handle GW2 with everything on the highest setting.. Post your rig and if you have some tips please leave a comment for people looking to upgrade to get the best exp in GW2 like myself :(...

Here my old girl, she like my wife got a lot miles but has some use left in her....:p
Feel free to leave comments, if this old beast going to be able to run GW2 with everything on high or If she going to need some cosmetic work! Thank you!

I like how you have 2 HD 5970's...I had/have one which BSOD's on my constantly...so I bought an HD7970 for 379 less $20 rebate! Loving it so far (ha no crashes basically since everything could run max anyways)

If I were you I would have already taken off all the plastic parts from the defective 5970 until I just had the bare PCB with the components and would've put it in the oven! Reflowing @ home :p

That's something I do not know how to do.

If you want to guide me on the "how to" I would probably do it and resell it on Kijiji ;)

Here you go: http://lifehacker.com/5823227/save-dying-video-cards-with-a-quick-bake-in-the-oven

It's possible that some components are broken but chances are that if you reflow it that it might work again (if there are bad soldered connections then there's the possibility that you'll get a BSOD and that's my 2 cents).
Might do this in the near future for an old Shuttle computer I have laying around, might have a home server soon. :D

In short: if a computer doesn't work and you can't detect any bad connections then it's not a bad idea to try reflowing the solder.

EDIT: Just to note here: when soldering with a soldering iron there's most of the time a fume coming from the solder, don't breathe this it's bad for your health (I usually wear glasses and hold my air when the fume starts coming out). This also happens when reflowing using an oven but I'm not sure to what end since I haven't done this (just make sure that you ventilate your room and you'll be alright). It's not like you'll be hospitalized but breathing it in isn't healthy.
