Less than one year after it first launched, BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic has been reworked into a free-to-play experience. Without paying you'll be able to create a character of any class and play through the entire story experience from level 1 to 50.
You won't have access to the full game for free, however. Many portions are locked behind a pay wall, and you'll need to purchase virtual currency, called Cartel Coins, to unlock them. Pay-restricted content includes unlimited access to Flashpoint dungeons, player versus player Warzones, additional item storage and clearance to use rare in-game items. So while you won't be able to get the full The Old Republic experience, you will at least be able to see all the story, which is arguably the best part.
Though there's now an option to play for free, it's still possible to subscribe to The Old Republic for full access.
Will this change in payment structure bring you back to The Old Republic?
Will you try it for the first time?
Also, though it was live when this story was posted, it appears the SWTOR site is having issues.

You should give the whole list of things you CAN'T do. I've heard the restrictions... and the game's not even worth playing. It's not f2p, it's a demo.

If you like the better sides of Bioware storytelling in your RPGs, it is worth trying. Play the agent or warrior story Empire side. I'm not sure how bad the quality of life restrictions in f2p are, but you can always decide to subscribe for a month if you find that you do like the story, but are annoyed by the restrictions :D

Its free for people who just want to play the single player story campaign with an constant online connection. After playing it for about 3-4 months, still feel that the combat interface is re-skinned from WoW.

you cant run for the first 15 levels... reduced exp earning... limited chat.. no bank.. only 2 quick access bars... the limitations are HORRIBLE... F2P players are considered second class citizens on most games but these guys treat you worse than an illegal alien with no rights whatsoever AND shove it in your face any chance they get, thanks but NO THANKS!

That's really a shame, I was willing to check it out again since I'd only done about half of two storylines, and I really did enjoy that part of it (the reset of it was just... lackluster ).. do people that purchased the game get the same limitations? I got the friggin' CE for that once since I was so amped up for the game.

I tried it and its alright for a little bit then it gets boring and not worth it. Guild Wars 2 is a whole lot better. The mechanics are better than SWTOR. One thing that i like better is than i can run around casting spells. Not stuck in one spot getting hammered by people. Nothing like raining fire down on someone standing still.
