Super Moon

Everyone is talking about this crap today. Sure its the closest its gonna be or has been in thousands of years. Sure it 14% bigger than it was at its smallest. It's not like its any bigger than it was yesterday or last week. It's not like the moon suddenly made a left turn and came thousands of miles closer to earth today and will go back to its regular orbit on Monday. It's been slowly getting closer for years because the orbit is a slight oval and not a perfect circle. After tomorrow it will slowly be getting further away until generations from now someone will be all "Its the smallest its ever been"

If you see a difference in the size of the moon tonight its all in your head.
 
Tonight the moon is the closest to the earth it has been in thousands of years. It won't be this close again till like the year 3213 or something. Its because the orbit of the moon is not a perfect circle. It will be 14% bigger than it was at its furthest away from the earth. Also since it is a full moon tonight for America it is said to be the brightest ever. Also because of the closeness.

The thing is, that it has been getting closer by little bits for many many years. The change from yesterday or last full moon even isn't perceptible to the human eye. Its a piece of trivia nothing more.
 
I thought the moon had been slowly moving further from earth? Hm. I looked at it yesterday and yeah, nothing special.
 
Turns out my info was bad by orders of magnitude.

The rarity is a full moon at the same time as being at the closest point in the orbit.

I did see some side by side pics of the size diff, and stand by my assesment that if you think you can see the dif you are fooling yourself.

It's one of those things where people get all worked up about nothing. It winds my gears and the grumpy old man comes out.
