So I know for a lot of the more casual players who are picking up this game every once in a while to give it a shot, it seems to have been kind of difficult to survive. And I wanted to give some pointers.
Before that, though - loot is a constant struggle. For the majority of H1Z1's life, loot respawn rates were broken, so there was nothing in the world. NOW, it's broken in the other direction, where things respawn instantly. You can now hit a box for hours and continue to get loot.
Anywho, barring that craziness, these are a few things I have found that help with survival, regardless of loot.
1) Immediately at spawn, shred your shirt and pants. That will give you enough for both a bow and a satchel. Yes, you lose 190 space, but the satchel then gives you back 300, so in the end you are gaining some space. Also, you can find shirts and tshirts in houses, so you can stock up on clothes again throughout the game.
2) Making campfires can be difficult at first if you have nothing to chop down wood. Lucky for you, lots of places already have campfires set up such as caravan sites and campsites out in the wilderness. Water towers are notorious for having a little campsite set up under them. All you need is a bowdrill, which you can make WITHOUT an axe/machete/etc. Here is what you do: Gather sticks. Find cloth/shred clothing you come across. Go into any gas station or places that have boxes and punch them until you get a plank. Those three things will craft you a bowdrill, which you can use on any of the campfires out in the world.
3) COFFEE! Omg, did I not realize how OP coffee is. Coffee isn't exactly plentiful, but if you can find 1 or 2 bags of coffee every scouting mission, you're golden. Why is coffee OP? Here's why: empty bottles are 50 bulk. Purified water is 50 bulk. Blackberry juice is 50 bulk. Coffee? Only 5 bulk. And it gives you both health AND hydration. (If you add sugar too it I think it gives you a bit more health than regular coffee, not sure though.) So basically, you can carry around ALOT more of those things than other means of food and water.
From there, you are pretty golden to go out and hunt and scavenge. I personally prefer the "make a home base, but go out for supply runs" type of gameplay, but you might not, so I won't bore you with crafting details. But know that once you've done the three steps above, you'll be staying alive longer to go find the loot you really want!
