Hello, my name is Passage, and I'm an -aholic.

Workaholic, gameaholic, mmorpgaholic, foodaholic, beeraholic, sleepaholic, vapeaholic, bingewatchingnetflixaholic, audiobookaholic, phoneaholic, scifiandfantasyaholic, and more seriously, an equalityaholic.

Probably a few more -aholics hiding around that I don't want to admit to myself.

I am of mixed ethnicities, nationalities, and religions; I studied filmmaking, animation, game design, and telecommunications during my undergrad years (albeit not all in school); and I've been with my GF for a decade.

Ask me anything!

What's your favourite board game? RPG? Book? Movie? Comic book Character?

What brought you to AltTabMe?

Which of your current -aholics is effecting you the most? If you were to go to an -aholic anonymous meeting would you share with the rest of the group?

What is the most different types of animals have you eaten in a single day?

The design of the pic from the OP & Avatar was asked, but I want to hear the story behind it.

What does it mean to you and why that pic?
Where did it come from / Where was it found?

As someone who has studied so much art I'm expecting a really deep answer,
OR a really short funny one.

Oh, and why didn't you warn yourself that it was your week in the AMA thread?
Yer slippin....

What's your real name? What do you do for work?

Jonathan. I'll respond to any variant except Johnny. It just doesn't register as my name when I hear it, so I don't acknowledge the speaker.

I work in production for film, tv, and web. "Production" meaning the process of ensuring that all elements for a job are in order - something akin to a wedding planner.

I've been in this industry for 3 years, so my roles vary:

Producer - Non-union jobs < $30k
Production Supervisor - Non-union jobs < $75k
Asst. Production Supervisor (aka "Production Coordinator" if I were a union member) - Union + Non-Union jobs > $100k (so far $100k - $3m)

This can be anything from short films, commercials, and music videos to 3D or 2D animation.

For example, what do you see here:

Batman on a the batcycle riding in a tunnel?

In what little experience I have, I see on camera and off:

Stunt Driver (SAG), 1AD and/or 2AD, hero costume with legit safety padding, medic on site, fire marshal on site, location fees, location site rep, location permit, civilian lockups, police traffic lockups, camera car, camera car teamster, camera (possibly high speed) with long lens, cam. op, 1AC, 2AC, director on camera car, handheld monitor for director, case of water on the camera care, water truck for that floor shine, art dept to clean the road and walls, elecs to switch out the bulbs (if location allows), crane to access lamps in order to swtich the bulbs, a large lamp to create the light at the end of the tunnel, grips, flags or screens off camera, picture car and car prep team, basecamp nearby and out of frame, talent motorhome, craft services, production motorhome, video village, parking for crew, parking for all the equipment trucks, staging area for gear, etc etc. This might even just be B-Unit stuff. Not to mention the prep involved to ensure all of these items are in play, and the wrap afterwards to make sure everything is paid for. It's all very convoluted. And considering all those costs, it's possible this shot was built in 3D.

What's your favourite board game?

This is a tough one. I really like stories that introduce new lore into typically agreed upon canons, even if the characters suck. I also enjoy stories that make me feel like I've lost a friend once the story is completed.

Most recently, I enjoyed the Mistborn trilogy. I'm still keeping up with Game of Thrones, and I really enjoyed Gone Girl. Goldfinch was pretty good. Without looking at my library, I can't recall what else I've read. These are selects from the past two years.

I'll also admit that I read and liked Twilight. Don't get me wrong, I hated Bella, but as an example... there's a chapter that was written from Jacob's point of view. I really felt like I was viewing the world from the eyes of a different person. And the shiny vampires? Okay, it was silly. But kudos to Steph Meyer for going against the grain.

Woo, also a tough one. Let me tell you about my Netflix rating system...
  • 1 star - Couldn't finish watching it
  • 2 stars - Finished it, but didn't like it
  • 3 stars - Finished it and enjoyed it.
  • 4 stars - Would voluntarily watch it a second time
  • 5 stars - Could watch over and over again; if the flick is underrated, upvoting to help out.
I have very few 5 stars. Requiem for a Dream, Fifth Element, Half Baked, Princess Bride, Matrix (I), Usual Suspects was very good the first two times, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, The Labyrinth. Pretty mainstream list for a filmmaker. I'm a black sheep.

Comic book Character?

Wolverine! Wait for it...

It's always been Wolverine... the first comic I ever bought was a Daredevil+Ghost Rider comic, but the second one was Wolverine #17 (1989) and I've been a fan ever since.

17-7.jpg

At the tender age of 7, I just thought he looked cool. I couldn't articulate why, but I can tell you now that the gruff demeanor and simple color palette look good. No blues, red, yellows, or green (though he did adopt blues later on). I kept reading because I found the lone wolf/mysterious past character interesting. I was also interested in japanese lore, and of course the Wolverine storylines catered to that, too.

What brought you to AltTabMe?

I was Googling stuff about ArcheAge and found tr1ages' article.

Which of your current -aholics is effecting you the most?

Smoking, definitely. I mean, I quit smoking and vape now, but the addiction is no less debilitating. It's distracting. My mouth starts watering, my throat gets dry, I can't concentrate on the task at hand, I get irritable. I don't even enjoy it anymore. I just vape to stop the craving. If my vaporizer battery dies, I'll leave wherever I am to go buy a disposable ecig or drive back home. I will quit some day, but not today. And probably not tomorrow.

I'm usually a pretty calm dude, so the irritability gets under my skin. I get irritated that I'm irritable. Viscious cycle. The only things that otherwise regularly get me on edge are intolerance and inequality, and watching the news. Not because it's all bad news, but because we as an audience generally believe we're getting objective news, but the language in the reports usually swings towards some agenda or another.

If you were to go to an -aholic anonymous meeting would you share with the rest of the group?

That depends on my recovery progress. Just going to a meeting? Probably not, but only because laying my business out on the table usually jynxes me somehow. I probably jynx myself. I have a higher success rate when I keep to myself.

If I had finished the program, then I would love to share any successful tips and tricks.

In my description, the list was intended to be honest, but a bit funny. I am predisposed to addiction. My father was an alcoholic. He quit drinking the day I was born, but he has since become addicted to Vicotin due to his back condition. He's actively trying to wean himself off. Both my parents are smokers. My grandmother was also an alcoholic, and my uncle was addicted to PCP after the army. Pretty clean on my mother's side, but I don't see them often so I might not really know.

What is "game" to play right now?

I love me some Hearthstone.

Can you post an interpretive ice dance of your life?

Why didn´t you post a reminder for yourself in the Tab AMA thread?

I started to, but then scolded my OCD.

Do 5 year plans make you want to punch a puppy?

Yes and no. Yes because it'll be difficult to adhere to, but considering how much I still have to learn in production I hope to be regularly PMing or ADing in 5-7 years, producing in 10. I meet a lot of people who call themselves producers but don't know shit about what it entails. I'd like to enter the duties as at least a B level producer.

I now know why I cannot read you, you are the kryptonite to my world. Producers and Directors.... kinda like Batman vs Joker.

Did you design that photo in your OP?

Sadly, I cannot paint that well. My art looks like

What is the most different types of animals have you eaten in a single day?

6! For my bday this year, I probably had hard boiled eggs for breakfast, a bacon burger for lunch, and had a sample plate of exotic sausages for dinner with the fam. Kangaroo, Buffalo, and Gator.

The design of the pic from the OP & Avatar was asked, but I want to hear the story behind it.

What does it mean to you and why that pic?
Where did it come from / Where was it found?

As someone who has studied so much art I'm expecting a really deep answer,
OR a really short funny one.

I'm attracted to art with contrast. Not just visually, but the context. These are my three favorite images:

4_10_09_%20(137).jpg

So much contrast here. Fire vs. water, light vs. darkness, the clarity and sharpness of the foreground vs the blur and ambiguity of the background, her calm vs. the violence of the scene, she's protecting herself from the rain but she's not protected from the flame, one could imagine she's attractive but she's, well, on fire, which triggers natural instincts to run away. Even the camera angles are weird. It seems like an eye level shot of her, but I imagine the background is a rubbled cityscape, maybe looking down a bit. She's so small while the shapes in the background are so big.

20150208173744!Duchamp_-_Nude_Descending_a_Staircase.jpg

I've stared at the above image for hours. I'm not sure why, but I suspect it's due to contrast, too. The light vs dark, the central round hyphenated lines compared to the dada geometry, and the implication of rapid motion despite the very calm posture of a dude casually descending a staircase.

796fb17b-1b2e-4001-843b-77f24ec7b170.jpg

To answer the question, a lot of the points I found in the first image apply to my avatar, too. Light vs. dark, clarity in subject vs oddness of the background, calm face despite the unsettling shapes and quick messy brush strokes, blending paired with obvious drips and drop strokes, implied movement with feathers blowing in the wind yet she's obviously static, and what the hell is happening to her head? She feels organic but also very shattered, or robotic. It's attractive but off-putting. I really enjoy looking at this image.

I took a photo of this painting, "Harvest Moon", at the 2015 LA Art Show. The artist is Steven Lopez. It's actually for sale and I would love to buy it if I had more disposable income. The makeup feels primal, almost peacocky, but the look on her face says so much more. If the Mona Lisa begs the question "why is she smiling?", this painting has the same appeal for me - what is she thinking? Why is she thinking it?

Oh, and why didn't you warn yourself that it was your week in the AMA thread?
Yer slippin....

?

Actually, that's called interpretive ice dancing.

I honestly copied the template and almost submitted, but then I asked myself what the purpose of the reminders was. If the goal was to let everyone know when an AMA began, then it would be cool for me to post. But the goal was for me to remind others when their turn was approaching. A reminder to myself would be redundant and went against my self-imposed rule. :][DOUBLEPOST=1432101132,1432101050][/DOUBLEPOST]
Producers and Directors.... kinda like Batman vs Joker.

Almost as fun as the AD vs the DP.

*shivers* there is no way around a fight on set between the producer and the director when filming.

What´s your favorite minecraft mod?

So............... I've never played Minecraft. /hides

Waffles vs Pancakes vs French Toast. Choose one.

I saw that fight on PPV once. French Toast came out swinging, but was too soft in the middle. Couldn't take a punch. I bet on Waffle, but he went down in the 8th after a vicious Pigs-in-a-blanket combo from Pancake. Tears were shed. It was glorious.

You're a Mortal Kombat fighter. What's your fatality?

I spout useless facts about random shit until they kill themselves.
