Since I'll be rolling tank right out of the gate, I wanted to start up a conversation with fellow aspiring tanks to get thoughts about what we want and don't want. Since all of us are either not in beta or under NDA, we won't be able to get into specifics yet. /cry

Here are some questions to get us going:

Why are you excited about tanking in WS?
What are some elements from other games that you would like to see incorporated into WS?
What are some mistakes made in other games that you don't want to see repeated?

There isn't really a "Shield" class which I like - it's just different.

I think what is unique is that it matters which skills you use to slot and the gear chipping, not talent points.

I am looking forward to a ranged tank, just to see how that plays out. Initially I was looking at the Warrior and SpellSlinger classes so until I get to try them out I won't know for sure which route I will take :)

I love tanking in general. I get the most out of fantasy games when I got a sword and shield type character. I'm gonna play the hell out of a warrior because it fits that aesthetic and looks totally badass. I do hope that Wildstar takes a bit of a different path and incorporates a lot of movement and flowing skills, as being a static wall is kind of boring.

I hope all the tanks are viable in all situations. I hated get benched because the warrior could minmax the situation better or some other excuse. I also want to see more tanks in raids, not just 2-3

I'm rolling heals, so from this perspective I'm very intrigued as to how tanks will be mitigating their damage and threat mechanics as to keep us healers lazy and not need to work as hard.

Not sure if tanking but if I do it will probably be the unnanounced <redacted>!

Can Spellslingers tank? I probably missed something. I might have to seriously consider that.

My tanking background is Paladin. I really enjoyed the aoe effects, reflected damage, and buff utility. I'm hoping for something similar in WS. Not necessarily magic based, but with something more to it that just bashing it with a sword.

The part of raiding I love the most is strategic positioning. Balancing damage avoidance and aggro maintenance while positioning for maximum dps and healer access is a TON of fun to me. I actually enjoy off tanking the most. I like running through the group and pulling adds off healers and dps and dragging them to their demise. I'm hoping for lots of aggro-grabbing cooldowns and multi-target control.

Spellslingers are healz/dps

I thought so. The ranged tank comment, plus the mention of Spellslinger threw me off.

I general, I don't like ranged tanking because it makes positioning much harder to get precisely. That's pretty much only used when the encounter forces you to with unmanageable aoe damage close to the target.

I hope that the three tanking classes do so in different ways.

Much like some of the content in WoW, guilds should benefit from having/need to have all three tanking classes available, as certain fights may lend themselves better to particular classes as MT.

This is my fondest wish.

Now, I typically roll a Warrior, but I don't know if I'll use one as a tank though. Need to play the game before I decide.

I would like all the encounters to be possible with one style of tank, but optimized for a variety. That was the raid isn't necessarily held up if your stalker is on a break.

I definitely agree with that. What said was unclear, but you fixed it for me.

No encounter should need a specific tank to ensure success, but I think certain encounters should need certain classes in certain roles in order to ensure efficiency. I'd really like that.

Mostly I wonder how tanks will function in PvP. In SWTOR it was nice that you could give a shield that gave DR to the person shielded and using a taunt made the enemy do somethink like 15% reduced damage to other targets. Mostly I'm just wondering this from a selfish point of view cause I like to stay alive.

Sorry. Warrior and SpellSlinger are the classes that took my immediate attention, and with that I have not figured out which role I would like to play. That, coupled with the unannounced tanking class makes things interesting.

It would definitely be nice if you didn't have to have different specs for PvE and PvP, that way you could still roll a dps off spec. I also like it when PvE is relevant for PvP. Not optimized, but at least passable as maybe one tier down or so.

Yes, fortunately for us that like diving into the deeps a pvp spec can usually work just as well for pve.

WoW killed that for awhile by requiring unique stats for PvP that were completely irrelevant in PvE. As a result, the PvP gear was underpowered for the same PvE level since it spent so many points on resilience.

Gaffney has stated that tanks will have things that will translate to pvp. Taunt is a specific one that they mentioned that if you taunt someone his damage is reduced on everyone but you for a set period of time.

Other devs have spoken about how they implemented the spells in the game and how they can adjust them separately depending on if you are hitting other players or mobs. This will let them tune specific abilities and spells for pvp without it effecting pve and vice versa.

WS gear has PvP Offence and Defence. Not sure how that will effect the other stats if it will.

Ahhh... like expertise in SWTOR. Yeah gear is a different thing but I mean, purely skill/spec wise it would be nice to not need to pay for a respec (or however that will work in WS) every time I wanna go from a warplot to a raid. Just swap out gear for set bonuses and be ready to roll... not that this is relevant to the topic, but it would be nice for you tanks as well.
