There are plenty of reasons for wanting to get in on a beta. Probably the most common reason is a dying curiosity to play the game right the heck now. But lately I've started to wonder if there's another group of beta wanna-bes: the people who don't want to get left behind in the rush out of the gate on day one.

In an age when you can know practically everything about an MMO before it launches thanks to beta miners and plenty of people use this information to get as fast of a start as possible, there could be anxiety that while your friends have just dinged level 20 in the first hour, you're still trying to figure out how to use the UI.

To put it bluntly, do you beta so you won't be a day one noob? Does a beta help you find your "game legs" so that you'll feel more confident at launch?

I'm definitely guilty of this. The main reason I try to get in betas is to see if the game is actually worth buying. Then I try to get a feel for most of the systems so come launch day I am well prepared.

I think it could, but I'm not that ambitious. Any bump that beta gave might give you a small world first advantage, but weeks in it wont matter anymore.

I like betas for a few reasons. First I want to play RIGHT NOW if I can. Second I want to kind of try everything so I can know what works best for me and get a handle on it before launch where it really counts. I guess that is trying to not be a day one noob. Third I want to get in and actually find the things that are busted so I can report them and have them fixed for launch. That is what beta is for after all.

I like to play beta to see if i even like the game and want to play it, also to see what class character ect i want to play

This is often why I try to get into betas as well.
I understand that the beta version of a game is an unfinished product, but it gives me a pretty good impression of what the game will be like when it's finished. I also consider the beta to be a chance to see how well the developers communicate with the community, and how well they respond to feedback.
If I end up being passionate about a game and the community, I take my responsibilities as a beta tester seriously.

I'm just hasty. I want things as soon as I can get my hands on it. I'm a lot like a little kid that way. A fault I know I have to fix. XD

I play beta for character creation... I am a character creation ADDICT! I'm guilty of spending hours tweaking things and taking screenshots so on day 1 I know EXACTLY how to get the look I want. Yes... I'm vain.<3

The [primary] reason I play beta to help make it a better game.

Said like nobody ever. I just like to play stuff.

I don´t know how I feel about Betas. Every game that I tried out in Beta failed to entertain me after lunch. But I really like to try out everything I can do in Beta.
