((Time is up story is being progressed
Velma will be represented by this color.))
Velma listened the to Captains words but as she was losing blood quickly didn't really hear the part about putting the bags on the line. She began to grab at the rope.
The Captain loosened her grip as she felt Velma strain the rope with her weight, "Velma! I need you to put the bags on there first. One at a time. We don't want to break the rope with all the weight!"
The Captain could tell that Velma was losing consciousness and she knew this would be her last moments in this world.
"Stay with me Velma. Remember..." The captain choked up a bit, "Remember when you would come to my room after the long days of waiting?"
Velma shifted her attention to the voice she made out as the Captain above her, blinded by the white light flooding in through the small hole above, unable to make out any faces. Normally this topic might make Velma quiet and reclusive, but in her state of mind it brought her a level of comfort.
"Yes Captain. I remember. I waited everyday for those nights."
The Captain continued, "Me too Velma! Me too." The Captain tried her best to keep her moving and her mind off what she was doing, "I had no right. You have always been stronger than me. You are miles ahead of your years. You taught me so much. You taught me how to let go. "
As the Captain continued talking Velma tied a bag at a time to the rope and the Captain hoisted them up. First was Kurt's bag.
"You were there for me and I didn't appreciate it. I didn't appreciate the picture you painted for me, because I didn't understand. I didn't understand the world. I still don't understand it Velma, but I understand you."
The rope was creaking as it pulled the second bag up, this time it was Jack's.
Velma began to tie the Captain's bag to the rope and something fell out of the side pocket. She stopped what she was doing and pushed it into the light with her foot as she could hardly move from where she was sitting. It was the comb she used to put through the Captains hair as they sat in silence warding off the long days. "You.. " she began to tear up, "you left me... You gave up on me. I never gave up on you. I came to your door every night until we opened the metal gates. I waited there."
The captain saw the brush. "I know Velma, I heard you outside of my door. And I did nothing. But now I have a chance to do something! I have a chance to share what you taught me to those left in this godforsaken world. That brush is all I had left of you, of humanity."
Velma pushed the brush back into the pocket and tied off the bag.
The captain began to pull up the bag.
Velma put her hand to her side and placed it in the light... her blood was thickening and black. She knew she was not making it out alive, and she knew the Captain knew too. "I forgive you Captain."
The Captain looked down the hole as she pulled out the bag running her hand past the brush as she placed it to the side. Velma moved her face into the light, her eyes told the entire story. "Don't do that Velma, don't... I don't deserve..."
The Captain was cut off by a loud noise behind her.
