What's new

What's in a name?

Back in my days of playing Jedi Knight 2 and Jedi Knight 3 at the age of 11 or 10 I was named "Montage." Upon entrance into a guild named KoR I was framed for misdeeds and quickly ejected and subsequently forgotten. Due to my frustration of not being believed I changed my name to MoDSec(originally MoЧeç) . I attempted to join the guild a second time and apparently the person responsible for my getting denied after 3 separate attempts, was in the guild and had an open and supreme dislike for me. He wasn't an officer or any such thing, he was just a member who disliked me.

The name evolved over time and came to have a meaning, where originally it was just a cool name. Mod = Modded, Sec = Second, as in the time it took me to perform an action. I always took a second, but it was a Modded second, or a Mod sec.

I was heavily into first person shooters and it usually coincided for the amount of it took for me to splatter your brains on the carpet.

My first love in the mmos was SWG. a group of friends all made our last name Longshaft so there was like 15 of us running around with our last names the same, I wanted to have a scary name so I went with Blackmens Longshaft...LOL Funny part about that name was after about 2 years they nerfed my name to Blackmun Lungshaft LOL! Ran around after that playing mmo's here and there no great names mostly silly stuff with the last name of Pants....silly pants....dirty pants...ex...so once I started looking into guild wars 2 I knew this was the one mmo I've been waiting for.....so thats when Macaroni And Siege was born!!!

So for as long as I've been playing role playing games (yes... I started on tabletops and then the name followed me into online games) I've always used Kaid or some variation. She started out as an assassin in a Dungeons and Dragons variation so I tend to make a Rogue or other stealthy character and she inevitably gets that name. I had a Rogue in WoW named Kaidamaz (the "amaz" part came from a tribe she was in.../nerd) and it's also my League of Legends Summoner name. I was very tempted to just slap that name on my Charr but I decided it was time for something different. Since I named my dog Kaidlette and all of my dogs are scruffy and mini...I decided on the name Minnie Scruffs for my Thief <3

My other character name is not as exciting of a story. When I started playing WoW I spent probably a good 20 minutes trying to figure out a name I wanted but everything was taken. I was making a mage and I eventually got so frustrated that I just put my own name down (Ruxandra). It worked so that's the name I ran with and that I met all the Arcanix folks with <3 ! I've carried the name over through Warhammer, Aion, SWTOR, and whatever else I picked up along the way although she was usually a caster of some sort. So now I made a Mesmer and named her Ruxandra but I had to make a last name because that's just the best feature imo (always wanted a second name in WoW) so...I picked Sparklhart. I was originally going for Sparkleheart but that was too long and in any case I sort of like the way her current name looks. And I doubt there is any confusion as to why I would pick a name that has to do with sparkly hearts so I won't go into explaining that part <3

Bruce....I will murder you in your sleep and steal your girlfriend....No scratch that. I'm going to steal your girlfriend and make it so you can't watch. -_-

No one EVER play this song at me....EVER...or risk incurring my wrath. This is when the sparklyhearts go away *psycho*

I have been playing MMOs as far back as the early UO days, where I went by the name Sin and various others. Obviously, as time went on the disadvantages of having such a common word as my signature name became apparent. In EverQuest, I joined up with a bunch of others in mind to create a themed guild on the PvP team server Tallon Zek. I decided to play a barbarian rogue within the guild, and came up with the name Hoibeard. The name stuck with me for almost a decade, but began to feel tired and out of place in other games. I also learned it was a real name, derived from Hubert, which had a specific pronunciation, sounding more like hibert. I didn't care for it.

Glad came out of SWTOR, as an alternative, when I decided to create a bounty hunter alt that I would play as a good guy in the Sith Empire, which quickly became my main. The name was meant to shed light on the character's psychology. He was "glad" just to do the job of a bounty hunter and had no care for politics or the overall consequences of the Galactic Civil War. There is no real reason for the surname Komrad, except that someone beat me to plain Glad on our server, and it kinda rhymed.

Oh, and in FPS shooters and vehicle simulation games, I often went by the names Jimmy the Hand and Ass On Fire, when name restrictions allowed. Both are somewhat of a play on words, and meant to be humorous.

Good show, Huey!

Moulin Rouge was one of the few successful adaptive Theatre/film merges I have seen in a long time. That song and choreography were amazing. Can't say the same for Chicago.

My nickname first originated from my bigger brother, he would always call me one of the Brownies in the family. So since then really, I just signed up for some MMOs and what not under Brown or different variations. It was only when I played XBL with friends that it spread throughout my group of friends and the whole grade (Still in grade school, yeah I know). Some people don't even know my real name, they just know me by Brown. However, I could care less since I am so used to being called Brown that sometimes when people call me by my real name I totally ignore it by accident.

Now, my fall back when Brown is taken (which it usually is) is either ThatBrownGuy, or MostBrownPlayer. I mostly use MostBrownPlayer because it seems more unique and quite hillarious than most I have heard. This name actually originated from when I did track in my school, and after an event one of my friends just said "You are the team's MBP, Most brown player." Ever since then it stuck.

For GW2 I decided to spice up my name choices, so when I'm bored I usually use StumbleUpon and just find random stuff. I came upon a site full of Sanskrit names with their translations and decided to use them, so far I have used Aariz, Nirav, and Razaaq, they mean Respectable/Intelligent Man, Quiet/Silent, and Protector/Maintainer.

TL;DR I'm called Brown, because...I'm brown and I like incorporating the Sanskrit language in my GW2 names.

A long long time ago my favorite duo of fantasy writers wrote a book based on Mahabharata. It was an interesting action tale that fucked around with the concepts of faith and free will (while being quite respectful to the source material). Out of all the devas in that book, Indra was the most laidback and pimp (tbh he's pretty pimp in the myths too, although not so much with the laidbackness), and at some point when I needed an online nickname, I thought of him and his awesomeness - but I really, really hated taking known personal names for my own, so I took one of his titles, that of Lokapala (and, well, I really like how it sounds).
The fact that I'm calling myself the King Queen Of the East Fire Sun Thunder and most of the time no one knows is a bonus :D

As for my characters' names...

My Norn thief is Imre Forger, and he's an expy of my tabletop character, who was an aritifcer mage and a con artist (with bad taste in jokes, hence his last name - he insisted that it's because he's an artificer and does lots of smithing and what are you implying, sir, I'm offended). He ran around the Planes double wielding magic pistols of his own making, trolling the shit out of several gods, destroying all magic in Faerûn and one level of Abyss (it was an epic level campaign :D). Saved the universe in the end, so all's good.

My Sylvari with the Green Knight storyline is called Gwalchmei, because well, sylvari are all about the arthurian knightliness and the Aen Sidhe Seelie/Unseelie Court thing, so what else could I call him if not the original Welsh version of Gawain.

My Charr is Shaerna Stormcaller, because the first one sounds like a cat species name and the second both adheres to the warband naming rules and reminds me of the OMG OMG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE tank fight in a SWTOR raid (until they nerfed it, ofc) - oh, and she's an elementalist, so it fits on all fronts. (I honestly had no idea there was a Stormcaller in GW lore)

My Human mesmer is Maeve because Queen Medb and butterflies, man! Her last name is Farraday just because she needed one.

Some people don't even know my real name, they just know me by Brown. However, I could care less since I am so used to being called Brown that sometimes when people call me by my real name I totally ignore it by accident.

This made me chuckle :)

I only started playing MMOs in January 2010. My very first toon was named Derreth, I just made that shit up. However, as I discovered my love for playing and as I got more adept at playing I loved hooking up with my kinnies in LOTRO, I loved hearing that name. I was so sad that Derreth was already taken in GW2! I also used the name Chaerie in LOTRO and it has followed me though The Rift and SWTOR. I like the name because it is close to my real name, Sherri. Now, I get to hear my name in game and I don't get confused. So, I don't have some great story, but it's mine. Feel free to call me Derreth.

Been meaning to add to this post, I love the meanings behind peoples names, and yes, I read each post =)

So, I'm called Lilo, I use this as my Internet Persona, Lilo Day more specifically. It all started in High School in the late 90s I started playing a game called Darkness Falls through Gamestorm. It was a text based game focused on an Evil realm where your character was a vampire, werewolf, etc, can't remember all the races you could play. Anyway, I had a werewolf named Woofer, but they shut the game down, I think something happened to Gamestorm or they just dropped Darkness Falls. Years later I found the game once again, renamed Darkness Falls: The Crusade, it was expanded, there were 3 realms, Good, Chaos, and Evil. I was again part of the evil realm, decided to make a healer this time around and at that moment in the theatres was the movie Lilo and Stitch, so I made my healer's name Lilo and have stuck with it ever since.
As for the last name Day, awesomely enough, that's my real last name *ponydurr: No, there's no relation to Felicia Day, would've been sweet, but no.

With my in game names, Cub, Pye, Fir, Bay, Ona, Eixx, Myci, and Baiy... I love short names, the shorter the better, I took a couple weeks before release and came up with a huge list of 3 and four letter names and as soon as the servers went live I tried them one by one in the order of the ones I liked and the 3 letter names are the ones I got on release day, the 4 letter names I purchased gems with in game gold a week later so I was actually lucky enough to get ones that made sense!

TL;DR I'm called Lilo because of the movie Lilo and Stitch was in theatres when I started playing the game Darkness Falls: The Crusade
