4 Cities per Section

According to this picture, there is 4 linked cities per 16 person region. So we might have to split up a little to make those 4 sections profitable but we still work together in the region.

I thought I remembered reading that the number of cities in a region or cluster can vary some depending on the topography and so forth.

Regions don't link. Cities within regions do.
Yeah, my understanding is that cities within clusters directly effect each other by trading/buying/selling goods and have immediate environmental and financial impact on each other. Cities effect cities in other clusters by potentially allowing pollution to float over or come across in the water table (probably). They also have impact financially and could have Sims move out to better living conditions or have criminals taking road trips. Regionally, the cities indirectly interact via the Global Market, but pollution, crime, and more micro-economic concerns don't bleed into other regions.

Okay, I'm lost...
A region has the potential for 16 cities. Each city affects its neighboring cities (within the region) both directly and indirectly.
But what about these four sections? Do they somehow change that dynamic? Does pollution only affect cities within a section instead of the entire region? And if some of the effects that your city has on other cites is limited to your section, which effects have an impact on the entire region?

My understanding is that cities effect each other directly and immediately within a section (or cluster as I called it). They can effect each other economically, environmentally, and through crime.

Within a Region, sections can effect effect each other with pollution, crime, and other issues, but on a higher and (probably) less immediate level.

It doesn't seem to me that regions can effect other regions via pollution or have Sims move from one region to another (Sims can probably leave the region, but they probably don't travel somewhere else, they'd just cease existing).

Ok it looks like there are 4 regions in each city which would DIRECTLY influence each other, etc. Unsure if this is the limit or not. It also looks like they are linked to other regions by road/highway. The question is what level of interaction does this allow. Is it simply for disgruntled Sims to move to someone else's region, or is trade allowed to some extent?

It sounds like we are mixing terms.

A city is the smallest unit, controlled by one person. A section (or cluster) is a small group of cities (probably 4) that directly influence each other and work on the same Great Work. Several different players can be in the same section. A region is a group of sections (probably 4) that share a message board and influence each other directly, but probably at a slower or higher level than sections. Up to 16 different players can all be in a region. The world is made up of any number of regions and they all interact with the Global Market, but regions don't seem to directly influence each other (ie it might not matter what region is next to yours in terms of influence or effects).

In other words, this thread would be better titled "4 Sections per Region" or "4 Cities per Section"

I get what Zakis is referring to though - if you look at the screenshot in Tristan's post, you see yellow- and teal-colored lines that appear to be heading out of the region. I'm assuming they're roads and railroads, connecting the cities/sections in the region, and also symbolizing the interaction (i.e. Global Market) with other regions by "leaving" your region.

Probably. I have no doubt that the highways, rivers, and whatnot will go off the map to who knows where, but I don't think it will serve a practical purpose. I'd expect the Sims to spring into being when they appear on a road in a region and cease to exist if they leave.

Exactly Jia. I am hoping we can have some sort of trading options between regions.

Don't worry Zakis, you can be our region's trade mogul. Those mangoes don't cross the state line unless you say so!
