BREAKING: Disney Buys Lucasfilm, Star Wars Ep. 7 In 2015

TIG

I like GOOOOOLLLLD!

The Walt Disney Company has bought Lucasfilm for $4 Billion in cash and stock. In case you’re wondering guys — yes, that includes the Star Wars franchise. UPDATED 2:10pm

UPDATE: An investor call about the acquisition is happening at 1:30 PDT / 4:30 EDT. You can listen to the Webcast live here. (Conference call is now OVER. Updates from it below.)
UPDATE 2: With Episode VII set for 2015, CEO Bob Iger says they’d like to see a new Star Wars movie “every two to three years.”
UPDATE 3: Wait, crap. Indiana Jones is Lucasfilm, too! Disney owns Indiana Jones.
UPDATE 4: In the conference call, Bob Iger notes that Star Wars is “great for TV.”
UPDATE 5: George Lucas talks about the Disney acquisition here:

Which means Star Tours ain’t never leaving Disneyland, now. They’ve also announced that Star Wars will be completing its original 9-part structure, starting with the as-yet untitled Episode VII, which is slated for a 2015 release. Without George Lucas directing.
Lucasfilm was 100% owned and operated by Lucas, which means he just got an even bigger dump truck full of money. He also gets 40 million shares of Disney stock. In comparison, Steve Jobs held 138 million shares of Disney and was during his lifetime the largest single shareholder of the company.
Disney CEO Bob Iger said this:
This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.
Translation: ”We’re gonna sell the shit out of this.”
Lucas will not be President of the Lucasfilm division of Disney, now. That goes to the current Co-Chair of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, who will be Executive Producer on the new Star Wars films. Both the boards of directors of Disney and Lucasfilm have approved the transaction — so this is happening.
As far as that Episode VII? It doesn’t look like Lucas is going to direct it. He’s on as a “creative consultant,” and said “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.
Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound, LucasArts, etc. are all under the Lucasfilm Ltd. Which means they’re all now Disney owned. Every Star Wars book, video game franchise — everything. Disney now gets a cut.
Knights of the Old Republic? Disney get paid. All those Extended Universe books that Episode VII is sure to retcon? Disney get paid.
The moral of this story: Disney get paid. Lucas get paid.
In other news: The sky is blue.

I saw this earlier. Hopefully this means they will bring some new life into the franchise and stop rehashing the old stuff constantly. Simply not having Lucas in full control will help things a bit.

Granted most people may see this and go "AW FUCK ITS OVER", but as we already pointed out "The Avengers", "Pirates of the Carribean"...Disney has the capability to create some great stuff. The question of being able to appease diehard fans is still up in the air. I have to say while I will be skeptical they can pull it off, I am quite interested to see how they flesh out the last three movies. I loved reading all those EU books based after the original trilogy.

The Avengers = Joss Whedon
Pirates = Goer Verbinsky.

When left to their own devices, and without a visionary at the helm, they produce such epics as: Mars needs Moms. John Carter. Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3. Frenemies. The Odd Life of Timothy Green (tanked fiscally)

This only works if they get someone amazing to helm the new blood in the franchise. When that happens, you get such films as:

Frankenweenie (Tim Burton)
Secret World of Arrietty (Forgot the animator's name)
Brave, and every Pixar film ever made (Jeffrey Katzenberg)

etc.

Agreed Dash. I would love to see Joss Whedon get his hands on Star Wars. I am a HUGE fan.

Joss Whedon doing Star Wars extended universe = biggest nerdgazm of all time. That is all.

I find teh journey of George Lucas fascinating. He started as avantgarde, fighting against the establishment. Then he became the establishment. And now he has sold out to the establishment.

PS- Han shot first, dammit!

I have mixed feelings about this. I know the Start Wars franchise, but was never a die hard fan of it (the fact that I like Jar Jar Binks is evidence enough of my casualness). Disney does have an opportunity to make something great, but we'll have to adopt the "wait and see" approach. I have high hopes though, just like with Wreck-It-Ralph. With any luck my spirit will remain uncrushed.

The only reason so many people say they hate Jar Jar is due to the band wagon effect. The same thing effects the new trilogy and Hayden Christensen. It's cool to say you hate them. Just like it's cool to say you hate Dane Cook in comedy. And how it was cool to say Michael Jackson was a horrible child molester before he died, and then suddenly after he's dead, he's a saint.

MJ was always a creep, The New trilogy isn't awful, Jar Jar provides decent Comic Relief and Hayden Christensen played Anakin how he was intended to be played. Thank you.

With a high profile franchise like Star Wars, I'm sure they're going to give someone the reins who's already proven to be able to deliver. It's the first real glimmer of hope for SW to rise from its ashes after the abysmal Episodes I to III.

On a side note: "Arrietty" was a Studio Ghibli production, I believe the only thing Disney contributed to that anime was an English dub.

Studio Ghibli is fantastic. Hayao Miyazaki is the founder and creative director. Every movie he's produced has been incredible. I especially recommend Howl's Moving Castle, but you really can't go wrong with anything labled Ghibli. I'm sorry, MODsec, but Jar Jar was a travesty. He seemed out of place and forced upon the movie rather than any sort of integral part. I didn't jump onto any sort of bandwagon. I saw Episode One opening night and had issues with it opening night. So maybe I helped fire up the band. I don't think the prequels were completely awful or anything, and there is no way they could have lived up to all the hype, so I do give them that. I haven't bought the prequels yet, but only because I'm hoping someone will buy me the 6 movie blueray box set for Christmas.[/URL]

My last message may have hinted at it, I love Miyazaki's work as well - the only thing I don't like about the Ghibli films is that I didn't get to see them as a child, ;)
I feel that Disney's animations have a lot of heart, but Ghibli's productions have both heart and soul.

Miyzaki! THat's the name. Damn his work is incredible. :)

I'm of the belief that Episodes 1-3 are an absolute travesty. As a writer, there is so so so much that is wrong with the script work. Directoral aspects aside.

Red Letter Media sums quite a bit of it up if you've ever seen any of that.

I'm sincerely hoping they get a visionary for the new episodes. And I will be jockeying to audition for those projects from now until the end of days.

Not only did the Jar-Jar comic relief not work, he was a racist caricature of Caribbean people. Compare Jar-Jar to the humor in the original trilogy; instead of tasking one character with being "the funny one" and surrounding him with dour non-entities blathering about trade agreements, Episodes IV-VI spread the burden across several people and derive comedy from characterization rather than simple slapstick. The originals are funny because of C-3PO's fussiness and Han's rakish charm, whereas Episode I tries to be funny by making Jar-Jar step in poop and drop things.

I will concede that Hayden Christensen's acting is not the worst aspect of Eps II-III, but that's damning them with faint praise. It's mostly because everyone else is just as wooden as he is. A lot of talented actors like Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, and even Christopher Lee are completely wasted on bland writing and lazy directing.

By the way, the English dubs of Ghibli films almost always draw stellar voice actors. Arrietty's parents were played by Will Arnett and Amy Poehler. If Disney was responsible for that, good on them.
