Cosplay - Anyone good with plastics?

So, I've been pondering this for a bit. I've wanted to cosplay at gaming/anime conventions for ages, but I do not have a creative bone in my body in the form of craftsmanship (one of the reasons I absolutely love crafting in games, it's something I just can't do IRL).

Is anyone here good with plastics? I've been thinking of making a full body suit of Megaman for ages (Or possibly Protoman instead because, y'know, he's badass as well).

I'm thinking a classic styled Protoman may actually be EASIER to do, plus making that shield would be BADASS. I'd love to hang around at PAX this year in that. It would be amazing.

My question is, is anyone here able to work with plastics for a full body suit? Commissioned possibly. I know I can't do it (but if I had too would try).

Check out this guy on how to do it yourself. Look at his Iron Man suit stuff. His earlier videos and articles on his website show how to make it from foam (like yoga mats) and papercraft then do a casting to do plastics or fiberglass. I would suggest doing a foam one first as a finished costume. Most people do painted foam for armor pieces.

also here is the kind of template I was talking about. http://www.instructables.com/id/Mega-Man-Costume/step13/Mega-Mans-Boots-Template/

Thanks Tig! That looks like the perfect starting spot. <3

So you want someone to MAKE you the cosplay outfit? Pffft that defeats the fun! Not to mention, you just mentioned one of the hardest materials to work with. Plastic. Get some fabrics and a sewing machine. That is a better place to start. You can always make fabric look harder than it is. You cannot however make plastic bend the way you think :)[DOUBLEPOST=1381155856,1381155792][/DOUBLEPOST]And then I forgot about 3-D printing and having a buttload of money.[DOUBLEPOST=1381155930][/DOUBLEPOST]
found the instructable on the whole megaman kids suit. I think the guy made a protoman too.

Bruce would look so cute in that! But see softer materials can be used!

Yeah, cloth isn't the way I'd want to go. It just doesn't look right IMO (at least for a robot). Thanks for the link tho :)

Yeah, originally I'm looking for assistance on how it could be done, but my buddy who does a lot of cosplay is telling me what a ngihtmare it is to make a Megaman suit (and it LOOK GOOD). So I'm looking for assistance. :p

Define assistance Mr. Slick with words. DEFINE IT!!

hey, I live in AZ. Can I get in on that?

Check out in the iron man thing on xrobots on how to make foam look like plastic.

The helmet shape would be the hardest to make unless you buy and convert from a store.

Wouldn't dr. Wiley fit you more with the beard?

I will help if you come by I actually am a very proficient tailor. :p My grandmother taught me extremely well. Where ya think the MURLOC costume came from!/

I talked to a few guys that were into cosplay stuff when I worked at Lowe's. They bought a ton of plastic sheeting and explained it to me in relative detail and it didn't seem too hard. I'll try and find a tutorial but you can mold plastic by heating it and vacuum sealing it to a mold of your body or whatever. It's not that hard, and I think would be the quickest way to make a megaman/proto suit. Might have difficulty with the helmet, but I dunno. They made full stormtrooper suits in this fashion.

Body molds are easy, too. You just wrap yourself in cellophane and have your lovely lady friend paper mache the hell out of you. Then cut the suit off and hotglue the seams, you have a mold. :D

I may ask for your assistance. I'm thinking I will follow the Protoman design, but use the Megaman as the more physical model. If I can follow the guidelines of foam painting, that may be my best option for a more "sculpted" physique, plus getting a nice gloss for "ROBOT SHINY" looks. That scarf may actually be the only sewing, but that is a super integral part of the outfit haha[DOUBLEPOST=1381164601,1381164485][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah, my buddy was telling me to try to find the cellophane that is used to wrap pallets, that's the easiest way to acquire body molds. Thanks for the help Sweet! <3

Glad you are getting into this, been planning on putting together some biker scout armor to join the 501st Legion.

I've wanted to do it for years, just... y'know, plan and then get lazy and then the conventions arrive. Now I'm 6 months out. I have time, especially if I get started sooner rather than later.
