GW2 Ranger BWE3 Builds

Ill have to screw around with both of these. Besides guild event's, Ranger and Necromancer will be my primary focus this BWE to finalize class choice.

Yeah, I want to test out some more Engy, and maybe give guardian a shot. I still just end up on my Ranger by the end of the day tho haha

Yeah that tend's to happen to me with the Engineer, but I want to give Ranger some serious playtime as it was the class I was theorycrafting for, etc. before BWEs began.

I don't really main a ranger, but I'll most likely be making one for sPvP. I've had the most amusing time playing shortbow/longbow pet focused survival ranger during bwe1.

I think I picked up tough/vit/power gear and life leech sigil for both weapons.

I abused the fact that most people ignore the pet and only focus on me. So I can kite them while they're chasing me. An easier way to get around the buggy pet AI is to switch pets when you see them not attacking/chasing.The -CD trait for the pet swap used to be -50% but now it's only -20% so I'm not sure if that'll be good for swapping pets constantly anymore.

Probably going to try this again in bwe3 and see if it's that much different.

Here is the build I'm planning to use. Please tell me what you think? Thanks

Not gonna lie Wooje.... I don't like it. You seem kind of scattered between what you want your role to be. It's like you started off with a support build, and then lost your way when going into the marksmanship traits. Also, getting the spirit walker traits and using those two spirits seems a little wonky to me. IMO, I would use this build for what I think you are aiming for. You lose a little bit of power for your own sake, but this build really improves your aoe support while also gaining more of a pet build.

But as always, play how you want to play! If you want to try that build go for it.

Also, I don't like the healing springs heal ability or that elite, but it works in your build. Probably the only situation I would use them.

I ran a similar spirit pet build on my ranger during the last stress test in spvp. Only tried it out for only 30 minutes because i ran out of time.

Seeing as ranger is regarded as the best support class in the game, this can be a very powerfull build in the right situation.
The Good I found.
I ran with a moa pet which has aoe heals that are further increased by compasion training. The ticks off those heals were pretty nice. I was seeing 250 to 300 every second. Add to that, the elite spirit pet also gives off aoe heals that tick off some nice heals per second, although I don't think it was affected by compasion training. Will have to test that out next time. Healing spring is an amazing aoe heal that properly traited can heal yourself and others for 10000+ hp and creates a water combo that allows the projectiles you shoot through it to heal allies when it hits enemies. Unfortunaltly, I probably have a good idea why Gyoin doesn't like it. It does have a terrible weakness that caught me off gaurd when I ran into it. I'll list that later. The use of the horn is obvious, call of the wild is one of the best buffs in the game traited with offhand mastery meant I could use it every 28 seconds, which is why I almost always kept my ax and horn out all the time. More buffs for my allies, ontop of the %35 chance spirit pet buffs I'd give to my allies. Quite a healing and buffing machine. The axe was honestly interchangable for me. Could have used a sword. I just liked it because I would always open with Winter's Bite to weaken my target for the damage dealers in my group. Then I would just spam 1 so I could concentrate on my spirit pet and ranger pet managment and maintain Call of the Wild at cooldown.

The Bad I found.
First of all, I found my damage output was lousy which was understandable. I was built around a support build. I was probably doing about half the damage output of a glass canon build. It was really really hard for me to kill someone 1v1 but because of all the heals I could generate I could survive a 1v2 battle for a very long time. The other hinderance to this builds damage output is your constantly occupied by pet management. Your Moa pet isn't that sturdy so you have to be constantly recalling it or swapping it out so you don't have death downtime. Same for spirit pets. Always have them up on cooldown. That's why this build is very weak solo. It really shines with the more people around you. As for healing spring, it the best Aoe heal in the game but it requires coordination with the other players. The fact that you have to stand in it for such a long time to get it full benefits sucks. We all know these battles are constantly moving and you and your group are rolling in and out of battle to avoid damage. Worst, if you're a range weapon ranger, you'll be kiting alot and won't be standing in one place for very long. It's a great skill with very situational use.

That's why I came to the conclusion, for the little amount of time I spent on this build in spvp, that I hated it for spvp. I don't think its used to its full potential in spvp. Most teams scatter to different points to capture spots, so most of the time I'd be with 1 maybe 2 other people to buff them. It was a waste in my opinion. Also, if your using voice chat with a group you know, you can announce that your putting down healing spring and tell people to stand in it to get its full benefits otherwise its wasted on a Pug group. The place where i think this build would shine is in a dungeon run. Everyones close together hopefully using voice chat. All buffs and heals can potentially hit everyone at once. Your not really there to do high damage to the mobs or boss but to buff and heal allies as you auto spam 1 on enemy.

Not sure. maybe i played it wrong or things will change but this build was kinda fun to play for a little while as opposed to the damage ranger but I still wouldn't make this my everyday build. Meh, oh well.

The offhand recharge is definitely amazing, bringing that timer down to a more frequent / stable level. The downside of that is that you become locked on your MH/OH weapon combo more so than your higher end damage weapon, such as the longbow. I personally don't care for the axe ranged attacks, as they feel lackluster and gimicky. The sword requires more melee, and while you have nice abilities the damage output is still subpar compared to the longbow.

Your idea of using this as a dungeon build primarily is excellent. I typically look at builds for viability in SPvP more than anything else, more or less because if you can handle yourself in SPvP, it most likely has viability in all other aspects of the game as well, depending on reaction, control, and damage output. Specifically creating a massive support / healing / buffing build for the 5-mans truly utilizes all skills of the ranger. At that point you could also work off of the shortbow instead of the longbow in your first weapon slot, stack conditions on top of other class conditions, and at least extend/strengthen your teams attacks more so than causing raw damage.

I particularly favor the spirit ranger build. I am more of a support oriented player, and want guild members excited to have my character around because of the fact that I increase their survivability. My intent is creating a support build that primarily focus on healing and buffing allies and me, while conditioning and damage output will be my secondary focus. I feel that the spirit ranger build is the best situational build for this role. You damage dealers are going to love having me run with you, watch and see!!

I definitely see your point about the damage output of the longbow being better for this build. I love the longbow. It's the weapon of choice for my primary builds for general Pve and WvW either in a trap build or signet build. My only concern with the use of longbow with a spirit build like this is in order to utilize the maximum damage range of the longbow, I have to keep my distance from my enemy possibly causing the ranger to exceed the maximum boon radius of the spirit pets to your allies essentially making the spirit build useless to your group. I'm not sure what the buffing radius of the spirits are. If you know that information it would be greatly appreciated. Your idea of using a shortbow is something I hadn't considered. It is almost a range/melee type weapon that isn't necessarily concerned about distance. Poison volley is a nice skill to use on an enemy who's in your face as all arrows hit the target at once. Not sure if all 5 poisons stack though. Hmm. You've given me something to think about. Again, this isn't my favorite build but damn its fun as hell to theorycraft these builds.

I'd definitely use this build with a longbow for defending a keep in WvW. Imagine standing on a keep wall with 30 other people as you and them rain down fire on the enemies. Your buffs are hitting multiple ppl and you can lay down healing spring at the edge of the wall allowing your allies to stand at the edge for longer periods of time while taking hits from below.

Here is a build I was testing in bwe3 (new calc has all the updated skills/traits and sockets for gear)
http://gw2skills.net/editor/en/?fMQ...ZTA;TEBA2yqEUJpSVliKKqMUJoySljKJVLCGEcI4RwkAA

The idea behind the build is to have many buffs that you share with your pet, high crit chance, and some survivability.

I picked up 3 spirit animals and the trait to let them run with me.
Spirit animals activate their toggle on death.
Pet receives all my boons.
Crits give my pet might.
Me and my pet gain opening strikes. (cause vulnerability on first hit)
Gain swiftness and fury on weapon swap.
Gain sharpening stones (next 5 strikes bleed) and regen at 75% health
Chance to bleed on crit.
Me and my pet gain 5% extra damage when I have a boon
Arrows pierce targets.
My regen lasts 33% longer.

Weapons:
Sword/Warhorn and Longbow

Pets:
Jungle Stalker and Cave Spider

Armor Upgrades:
+5% crit chance on each weapon
Superior rune of the ranger in armor. Adds precision and crit damage.
Rampager's Jewel upgrade in all my rings and amulets. Adds precision, condition damage, power and vitality

All this gives me a huge crit chance, close to 80%. Crits will buff my pet with might and bleed foes. With opening strikes for me and my pet I get a few stacks of vulnerability to start and the cave spider adds vulnerability as one of its attacks. When in combat I should have all 3 spirits up and buffing me and my pet giving us extra damage from having boons. Using the elite Rampage as one when its up gives me and my pet stability, fury, swiftness and might. Weapon swaps give me and my pet swiftness and fury. And when the spirits get killed or die off (or I toggle their on use) they will blind, damage, or cripple the foes in their area. Proactive use of my HoT heal, Troll Ungent will keep me and the pet rolling with since my regens last 33% longer. I also apply a regen at 75% health.

When in close combat I use the jungle stalker so he can roar might to me (and him by extension). He has a high crit chance and good damage. I use sword and warhorn to debuf and flank then gain some distance. Change to longbow add more vulnerability and damage and more distance if possible.

When at range I want to have my cave spider out adding more vulnerability, and shooting poison. Meanwhile I am hitting them with my longbow. Again the spirits and traits are buffing me and my pet for higher damage and crits causing more bleeds.

Take a look and tell me what you think.

Finally narrowed my main character build down to the Trap/Condition Ranger build. I was going to go with the Spirit build, but after the BW3 I found that laying traps down and doing a lot more condition damage was way more fun than having a bunch of goofy looking spirits around with me. The MH Axe, OH Torch and 2H short bow all synergize well with this build because all of them have condition damage based skills, coupled with Sigils of Agony and Smoldering. Wow! I am going to bring the PAIN. The pets I am planning to use with this build are the jungle stalker and the Cave spider.
