What's new

Syria...

Do you think we will end up fighting there? I don't see a way out of this one. Shit is biblical at this point.

you nailed it brother... as much as people hate talking about "religion", history is history... goes back to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac... this shit ain't ever going away... land disputes and things way deeper than we can imagine go back over 4,000 years.

Also, can I just ask this one thing?

Cane we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get to play Wildstar before the end of the world? PLEASE?!

See, this is why I'm glad I live on a mostly inhospitable island full of deadly animals - because its too remote for any of you crazy nutjobs in the northern hemisphere to give a shit about.

and your toilet works backwards! how freakin cool is that, huh?!

The bad part here is it keeps escalating, and Russia, China, and Iran are all on the offensive at the moment.

Why the fuck do we have a UN anyway? IT just seems pointless when it comes down to the UK and french agreeing before we take action.

This is my question. Why is this the United State's issue? This should come from the UN. If the UN decides that human rights are being violated then they should be the organization that deals with it. I don't mind the US providing support if the UN takes the lead on this.

If the UN functioned as intended, which is a body that was supposed to promote cooperation and communication, especially among the United States, Russia, and China. The problem is that we don't want the same things. Iran hates the US. Russia and China are about as passive aggressive as can be. Anything that weakens or embarrasses the US is fine by them. Since both Russia and China have veto power, along with the United States, nothing can happen unless those 3 countries agree along with some kind of majority of other states. So, since Russia and China have decided to take Assad's side, the UN will not be able to do anything.

Domestically, this situation has been fascinating to watch. It's almost a complete reversal of what happened just prior to Iraq. Republicans are cautious and don't want to get involved, while Democrats are positively hawkish and eager to drop some bombs. It's surreal.

I say "almost" because there were many Democrats that believed, along with pretty much everyone else in the entire world, that Saddam had WMDs. Almost all of them voted to attack Iraq and then became upset later and blamed Bush and the intelligence community when the WMDs weren't there. Now the Democrats can't talk enough about how much they trust the intelligence community and are chiding Republicans for stalling.

I'm in the unusual position of agreeing with Democrats on this one. The inconsistency on both sides is astounding, but the Democrats are coming down on the side I most agree with. I also think Obama is doing the right thing waiting for Congress to approve action. He does have the power to act without them, but I'm a fan of checks and balances. So I'm glad he is trying to do this in the right way. I do think he has the ulterior motive that if things do go very bad, blame can be more easily shared, but I don't fault him for that. That's politics.

"War becomes perpetual when it is used as a rationale for peace"

I say let Syria deal with Syria. Figure it out yourselves. We have enough shit going on around the world, and more specifically problems at home we should be focusing on. Unfortunately this will never happen. The problems that exist today in this country and around the world are the same problems that have always existed and will continues to exist. If they wanted to fix or solve them it would have happened a long time ago. In this day and age with the technological and educational advances in every field simple problems still exist and its because our cultures and governments and still based on old archaic systems. There are some amazing, intelligent people in this country today and these are the people that are "elected" to "run" our country? Clinton, Bush, Obama... Are you serious? Politicians have been and will always be full of shit. They play to the masses and tell people what they want to hear. They are all in the pockets of the corporations, and their strings have been and will be pulled by the "elite". They are not educated and skilled to handle or solve any of the problems that exist today, scientists and engineers are.

I was going to go on and on but its becoming more of a rant and Im just getting myself pissed off now. :D Time to work out!

People near me were watching the news last night and said a congressman was trying to talk the rest of the houses to go to war. It reminded me of this.

Has it been approved that Assad used the chemical weapons? I have only found information that it has been used, but no information on who used it.

In general, I agree that we shouldn't insert ourselves into other countries' business when there are no ties to our security. The issue here is the use of chemical weapons. Non-conventional weapons like that have long been banned by the international community by what Obama has referred to as an "international norm." I don't think America is taking the rebel's side, or at least I hope we aren't. Assad's regime broke with the accepted rules of war when he launched chemical weapons. That's what needs to be addressed, not whatever internal issues they are having.

The fear is that if there are no reprisals for using chemical weapons, it will become the new norm. Russia and China are willing to compromise on this because they see personal benefit in Assad keeping power. I don't think we should compromise on this. If England or Israel used chemical weapons, reprisals would have to be made against them as well. Granted, those would probably be in the form of economic sanctions rather than bombing, but sanctions are not going to have any effect on Assad.

According to Secretary of State John Kerry, the US' senior diplomat, there is a "high degree of confidence" and "little room for doubt" that the chemical weapons came from the Assad side. Apparently, the thinking is that the rebels don't have the capability to launch weapons like that. Also, all the chemicals landed in areas that were either rebel controlled or contested. So unless the rebels are shelling themselves, it's Assad.

Hindsight is hindsight. You have to make decisions based on what you know at the time. I think the evidence this time is much more compelling since the weapons have actually been used.

I am not saying that the weapons have not been used. I am saying they have not been used by Assad. I don´t consider Assad smart, but even he is not dumb enough to use chemical weapons.

Well, someone is stupid enough. Qui bono? It's a short list.

It becomes less stupid when you consider that China and Russia are on his side. Almost everyone doesn't want to be in a disagreement with those countries. England already has been cowed. It remains to be seen what America does, but we tend to act on principle for the most part.

My question is why Russia and China love Assad so much. Some think it's actually an anti-US by proxy thing. I don't think everything is about us, but Russia and China's refusal to act on UN investigation findings is suspicious at least.

In the Congressional hearing taking place right now, Kerry stated in no uncertain terms that they are 100% convinced that Assad used the weapons and also that the rebels have not. So we can believe that or not, but the evidence is there beyond a reasonable doubt.
