What's new

What's in a name?

Well, I wouldn't say its as hard as having a baby, just taking care of it for the first few years of its life. Hence the word keeping.

I understand this completely. <3

I've been pronouncing it High-yo-mike-ah, but I'll definitely be calling you Hi-yo :)

That's how most people tend to pronounce it, actually. And that's where the shortened version came from. One guy always used to say "Hi-o, Hyo" every time I logged in. He thought it was hilarious.

My name is from the book 'Oryx and Crake' by Margaret Atwood. I highly recommend it.

Just picked up her books, I'll look at em when I am done with the patrick rothfuss book I am reading right now.

I'm excited for the (supposed) eventual release of the third book. They all take place during the same time period, just from different perspectives.

Ahh! Are you reading The Name of the Wind or The wise mans fear?

Both were great but I recently read that the 3rd book is going to be delayed until 2014. :(

Wise man's fear. This is actually my second read through because I picked up both a few years ago and read em. When I saw the names again I thought I only read the first so started in on the second. Unlike most books I completely forgot most of Wise Man's Fear so its fun rediscovering the plot points again. Funny thing is there is such good writing and plot points in the book that I kept thinking they were parts of other books I read.

I read lots and lots of books mostly in the sci fi / fantasy genre sometimes in the suspense or cop drama genre.

He is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. Little things like
when Kvothe is with the felurian(sp) and his manner of speaking slowly starts to adapt a rhyme scheme.

Time to contribute to the actual thread!

The name Invasion dates all the way back to Diablo 1, I was 8 or 9 when I started playing and I was obsessed with aliens. Was AlienInvasion in D1 than SecretInvasion in D2 to just Invasion in WoW. Word has a special place now, been my alias in everything for 12+ years!

Probably best to bring it back on topic, but there is a what are you reading thread if you want to discuss books more.

Mine is really easy.
Last name: Simone.
Character Name: Simpwn.

I really wish I was more creative....

I was in the middle of re-reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when I started playing WoW and needed a name. Trillian wasn't available so I went with Fenchurch. It's a rather clunky name and I didn't like it much, but it stuck. Everyone called me Fen anyway, so I shorten it whenever possible. It also leaves me many alt options with alternate spellings. If I need more names or feel like being ridiculous, I look through lists of drag queen names - they are the best names ever.

Oooooh I like this thread.

Well I have two online handles that I mainly use. First since it's my name on here I'll start with Atomysk. If you've seen FLCL (Fooly Cooly) then you should know the legendary space pirates name was Atomsk. Seeing as that name is almost always taken in games I added the Y in between the m and the s. I think it sounds pretty cool and also suits my usual archetype (the spell caster).

The next is Galewinds. My middle name is Gale. I used to hate it because I was young and dumb and people used to say it was girly but now I have a really strong appreciation for it. Moving on.. in person I am sorta quiet, I never used to be but as I've gotten older for some reason in social situations I am super introverted. When I have a few drinks, that social lube causes me to go on rants.. so one night I was ranting about something I can't really recall but my friend Rob was like "You speak truth, the galewinds of truth are blowing tonight boys!" And immediately it became a thing, whenever I would go on a rant or have some input on a subject that people agreed with they'd say "The galewinds are ablowin'." So then I kinda just adopted it as a tag.

Luckily you explained that one, because "Galewinds" had me thinking in a completely different direction after you mentioned that it's your middle name, ^^
